If the Yankees do it, that means it's acceptable.

The thing that I take issue with here is a pitcher wearing a single-digit number, which is a very bad look.

This I agree with. I love the 1985 Blue Jays, and I'm a huge fan of Cliff Johnson. But that was not the right thing to do.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but with Yankee jersey retirements, isn't 0 the only single-digit number left for them?

Sadly, that is true.  While Roger Maris's story is a great one, I cannot agree that he rates a number retiring. The retiring of his number 9 was a reaction to his having been treated badly by fans during his home-run-record-setting season, as well as to his contracting a terminal illness at a young age.   And there should definitely be no retired number for Billy Martin, who brought the team more shame than glory, even given his excellent play in two World Series.

I’d be totally okay with the NFL allowing the use of 0. However, with the following stipulations attached-

Can be used by any player during preseason.

Only used by QBs, Kickers, and Punters in regular season.

I'd like it better for RBs and WRs but I'm weird.

I think I'm a bit weirder in that I think the only number stipulation that should be is that offensive linemen, since they aren't eligible receivers, should have their own set of numbers that no other offensive player can use, but other than that, anything should be able to go.

I was cool with Devin Gardner wearing 98 at QB at Michigan and in Japan.

Only 3 QBs have ever worn 2 for the Ravens. The most recent to do it? Jimmy Clausen in 2015, which includes that appearance of the pants that caused a riot in the Flock lol

The other 2s? Tyrod Taylor and Anthony Wright

Also just remembered RG3 is the first 3 with the Ravens since HOFer Matt Stover.

Might as well keep the sequential number train for Baltimore rolling... only two players have ever worn 4 for the Ravens.

QB Jim Harbaugh (1998)

P Sam Koch (2006-present)

The number 5 has only been worn by three players in Baltimore’s existence-

P Kyle Richardson (1998-2001)

K Rhys Lloyd (2007)

- can’t find a picture -

QB Joe Flacco (2008-18)

IIRC, When Baltimore traded Flacco, they said no other player will wear 5 ever again.

Only 2 players have ever worn numbers in the 90's for the Minnesota Wild

Pierre Marc-Bouchard from 2003 to 2013

Pierre-Marc Bouchard

and Branko Radivojevic in the 2007-2008 season

Radivojevic will play in Russia | Star Tribune

But, with Kirill Kaprizov and Marcus Johansson joining the team this season, that number will go up to 4. Kaprizov will wear 97, and Johansson will wear 90.

Steve Young is the only player to ever wear #8 for the San Francisco 49ers (and, apart from preseason players, will presumably be the only #8 since his number's been retired).

This always struck me as weird - the 49ers played 4 seasons in the AAFC (which had its own odd numbering system, yeah Otto Graham wearing #60 as a quarterback!) but had been in the NFL since 1950. Young joined the 49ers in 1987, that's 37 seasons without having a #8! It would seem less odd if it were 74 or 96 or something. I know, there were usually only a half dozen or so players per year wearing numbers in the 1-19 range (2-3 QBs, a kicker and punter)... but it sure seems like someone would've picked 8 before 1987.

That's wild.  Must be something about #8.  The Eagles didn't have an 8 from 1940-1972, and then have had a few decade-plus gaps without anyone wearing it up until the 2010s when each of their punters wore it for a combined 7 seasons.

On the opposite end of the spectrum, Washington has had a player use 8 from 2010-11 & ‘14-current

2010-11: Rex Grossman

2014-17: Kirk Cousins

2018: Josh Johnson

2019: Case Keenum

2020: Kyle Allen

2021? Who the hell knows, but my guess is either Allen or someone completely different.

Also for Washington, there was a nine season gap between uses of 4

Graham Gano (K) 2009-12

Taylor Heinicke (QB) 2020

Just like with the use of 8, for 2021, it’s probably either going to be Heinicke or not appear again for another nine seasons
