What a useless change for change sake. It doesn't even match the jersey anymore.

Should've just brought back the blue brim cap.

This is a top 5 favorite MLB cap for me. Without the blue brim though, it just looks dumb.

so, while i have many fond memories of this cap, i think the black brimmed version is superior. when combined with the black crown, the blue brim gives off a very purple vibe to me. i do think the mets are probably updating the jersey to  match this, which i like a lot. i did this (very crude) mock up over two years ago and i think it's superior to the current black alt.

I don't mind that change for the Mets. I have always had appreciation that they iterate the cap logos to match the jerseys -- like the road caps from a few years ago that had the silver monogram outlined in orange to match the shirt -- but in both the silver and this case, the cap logo is a bit too busy. Doesn't need to be, and it's okay for cap logos to not entirely follow the style of a jersey script.

This will probably help with cap sales too, which wouldn't surprise me if that is why they changed it.

It looks the new Nike Template is going to force the Orioles and the Braves into a sleeve cuff instead of the triple piping they had

Not surprising but that's a shame. I bet the Braves' version will be even more jarring.

The new piping seems to have thicker black sections than the previous piping. It's a small change but I'm wondering if it will look funny with the piping on the pants (unless they alter that too?)

This is a major bummer, albeit unsurprising. Along with the Braves, the Brewers will likely be affected as well. Even more disappointing than the stripe being moved to the edge of the sleeve is that, like @ptay mentioned, the orange stripe now isn't wider than the black stripes, they're all equal. I have to imagine they'd at least alter the pants to match, but we'll see. It's pretty sad that teams seemingly can't have stripes above the edge of the sleeve anymore, nor can those stripes be of unequal width.

This is also quite a bummer. I don't mind the Mets' black alt, the only thing that would've been needed to improve it would be to add back the black brim. I actually think the blue outlined by strictly orange looks more "purpley" to me, as the warm orange & the cool blue kind of blend together against the black background. I think the white outline all around was superior.

It's a petty thing, but it annoys me to no end when a team is forced to alter their design because of a template change. It happened to plenty of NFL teams (including my favorite team, the Panthers), and now it's affecting baseball (including my favorite team, the Orioles). Unacceptable for Nike to not be able to accommodate even some the most basic of design elements, uneven stripe widths and sleeve piping off the cuff. This new template is an embarrassment.

We must have missed this, but here’s a good look at a lot of jerseys on the new Nike template.

Some key takeaways:

  • The Marlins’ stripes will be a lot bigger (an improvement, although their color scheme still needs to change).
  • Pinstripe jerseys thankfully appear to be exempt from the collar and sleeve cuffs, as can be seen on the Rockies & Phillies. This should’ve been what the Nike template was in general.
  • Patches appear to be heat-pressed, which, if these are replicas, is an improvement over the old replicas, which rarely ever had patches at all.

Hate how the Braves jersey looks with this template

I’m a Braves fan and hate this change. It’s fairly minor and I’m sure I’ll get used to it a few weeks into the season, but the whole reason for the change is preposterous.

The Braves have worn some version of their current uniform for dang near 80 years. I know they’ve had some moments of change here or there but they keep coming back to the current design.

And now the design will change all because the manufacturer won’t sew on an additional thin braid around the end of the sleeve? Ridiculous.

Edit - two more thoughts as I stew on the insanity of this change. I can hear the Nike marketing speak dripping as they got all of MLB on board with the move. “We can make the uniforms lighter and more seamless. There will be less distractions for the ballplayer because he won’t have an extra seam sewn across his sleeve! Instead it will be built into the cuff!!” Meanwhile, nobody cares about the ad patches.

Second thought - since everything is fair game now, have we seen the last of the box shaped trim on the Braves pants above the striping? That’s absolutely a detail that belongs on a Braves uniform and would look out of place without it. You can kinda see it in the retro photos above.

Phillies don't appear to be chainstitched anymore.  That fraking SUCKS.  That's been a staple for decades now.

If that's what I'm seeing, then that's a goddam shame.

Where are you seeing that? To my knowledge, the only on-field authentics we have seen are the Dodgers, D Backs, and maybe one other team. Everything else we have seen has been the lower grade fan replica. I know Uni Watch said the Cardinals still plan to use chainstitching but they have to apply it to a patch and then sew it on (as opposed to direct embroidery). I believe that’s the same process the Phils currently use.

The Cardinals article did say that Bill DeWitt III had to fight hard to keep the chain-stitching. Who knows if the Phillies fought as hard.

That Phillies jersey is almost certainly a replica though, so it doesn’t say anything definitively of how the authentics will look.

So far this new template is NOT looking good at all.  However, these are only the replicas.  Replicas are the Vapor Limited, Authentics are Vapor Premier.  So I'm not going to pass final judgement until we see on field jerseys available.

IMO, the benchmark is the Brewers because they have all different styles of sleeve trim.  Home is the wide trim, away has the offset trim, weekend home is pinstripes, and navy has the single color offset trim.  And for added measure, the Nike replicas for their home uniform have always used the a narrow trim rather than the correct wide trim, so it’s been common knowledge now that nike replicas aren't the best reference material.

It certainly looks bad so far, but we really do need to wait until Authentics are in the wild.

I will pass judgement, I am sick & tired of Nike,, they ruin an element of EVERY league's uniforms, not because they can;t still do continuous arm trim on NBA jersey's, normal collar trim's in the NFL and now the Sleeve trim being above the fabric a bit in the MLB.

They do this to put their tramp stamp/unique "har har we're Nike" stamp on uniforms and I am tired of it.

Wasn't that video that was posted from the MLB Store X account showing authentics?  The Cardinals one appeared to be chainstitched (at least at a glance.)  If they were just replicas, then I'm not concerned.  But couldn't tell.

Bill DeWitt III is the closest thing we'll get within MLB ownership ranks to a uniform purist. Based on my experience, he gets it.

i know "tradition" and all, but if nike was insistent on this template, why didn't they just go to full pullovers instead of button-downs? button down jerseys don't really serve much in the way of in-game function, and i'd venture to say that it may even hurt them in retail. i don't know, seems wild that of all the innovation and everything, we still go with buttons because that how it was done for the majority of the game's history.
