Florio notes that this could potentially involve measures such as regulating that no player can play more than 17 of the 18 regular-season games (with possible exceptions for quarterbacks, kickers, punters, and long snappers).

Teams deciding which bottom feeder they're going to sit their stars against would make for comedy gold

This ""solution"" was also thrown around when the schedule went to 17 games. It's not going to happen.

Yea because in just a 18 game season you can’t afford to rest players unless you have your playoff spot locked up where byes and home field advantage are so valuable in a single elimination playoff. In an 82+ game regular season and best of 7 playoff rounds you can pick and choose when to rest starters because seeding isn’t as important as just making it to the playoffs.

Chris Mortensen has passed away.

Bummer. He had been sick for a long time, but this is still sad. Met him when I was a kid and he signed an ESPN jersey for me. Still have it hanging in my closet.

Add a second bye week? The CFL plays 18 games and (now) has 3 bye weeks.

Having 9 teams plays a factor in that as the thinking is that if the CFL ever gets to 10 teams (which is a big if) that teams will have two bye weeks.

If an 18 game schedule is happening, throw a two week bye in there mid season for all teams. Gives all players time to rest and players who have been traded proper time to adjust in their new settings.

There's no way the league will allow a 2 week pause for the entire league, if anything for the media partners.  2 bye weeks is definitely possible, but not that the same time or consecutively.

This sounds like a problem in search of a solution.

How many players get traded? Way more get signed and released week to week.

ETA -  Gambling partners won't want a limit to the number of games played in a given week due to added byes. I don't see it happening.

Absolutely. I could even see the bye weeks being spread apart in ways that are as beneficial as possible (whatever that might be) with some "bye-heavy" weeks around the 1/3 and 2/3 point. But every week will have enough games to cover the regular TV schedule.

A normal by week in 2023 had between 2 and 6 teams off in 2023 between weeks 5 and 14 (4 weeks had 4 teams, 2 weeks had 2 and 2 weeks had 6).  This means at worst a week had no fewer than 13 games played.  You'd also be adding 16 additional "betting events" for gambling partners with an extra week.

Understood. But adding one more week of games and then adding more byes that are unlikely to be spread outside the current bye week period means fewer games in a given weekend. that might not even be allowed with the current broadcast contracts - I don't know.

I don't think its been confirmed, but why would they jam all teams two bye weeks into the current 9 week period (currently weeks 5-14, week 8 had no bye weeks in 2023)?  I could see them making the bye week period a little longer, maybe even having two "sections" so bye weeks aren't too close and each team has one in the first part and one in the second part.  Maybe even a rule stating the two bye weeks could be no less than "x" weeks apart.

I'm no lawyer, but I would have to think that the broadcast contracts have clauses built in about adding more games to the schedule as a cause for renegotiation or specific stipulations.  The league added an extra game 2 years ago without major hiccups.

What was the average space between byes the last time the NFL had them?

It looks like 1993 was the last time the NFL had two bye weeks (16 games over 18 weeks).  There were 28 teams (pre Jacksonville, Carolina, new Cleveland, and new Houston).  I havent seen a set list of who had bye weeks.

Jason Kelce is retiring.  He couldn't make it through the start of his presser without crying for minutes.  Couldn't even get a sentence out.

HOFer for sure.  Arguably an Eagles Mt. Rushmore player, along with Reggie, Dawkins, Chuck Bednarik.

Special recognition to Big Dom for being the lifeblood of the org (and not being sarcastic.)

EDIT:

Just said on live TV that Nick Foles had the biggest dick on the team, and Doug Pederson the biggest balls.  Only one F bomb so far.

I love that he's retiring wearing a sleeveless Eagles T-shirt rather than the usual suit and tie that players usually wear when they retire.

Considering Tom Brady never beat the GOAT in the Super Bowl, Kelce is without a doubt the greatest 6th round draft pick in NFL history.
