2024 NFL Changes

My biggest annoyance with the new Lions look is that the blue on the helmet decals and facemask is a shade-and-a-half too light and doesn’t match the blue on the uniforms.

It’s possible that this is rain-related, but it’s hard not to notice

Same issue with the Eagles’ throwback helmets. They tried to make the shade too matchey in perfect conditions.

Smart is believing half of what you hear. Genius is knowing which half.

Hasn't the Lions' blue always been a little prone to mismatches over the years, kind of like the Vikings' purple?

Oh man I was so excited for these uniforms but that's gonna bug the hell out of me. Wayyy too light on the helmet. And I already disliked the idea of a blue facemask.

But still mind-blowing to see a new, non-throwback NFL jersey with classic block numbers.

 Yup.

and according to their social graphics the pants/jersey are the wrong shade and the helmet is correct:

Oof. That looks like a bad Madden rendering. It looks off, for sure.

I agree that the mismatch is noticeable, certainly. I'd go the other way though: the jersey and pants look too close to royal, and the helmet is actually closer to what I'd think "Honolulu blue" should be.

Excellent point. In the current environment of every number set being unique, it's nice to see a modern uniform with block numbers. I'm just thankful they didn't try to split the difference and go with 90% block numbers but adding something stupid like rounded edges (e.g. the late-2000s Vikings) or opposite corner points (e.g. any number of proprietary Nike number sets).

The classic logo is so much better.

Yep. The jaguar head is another example of the same situation as Tampa Bay's flag/sword logo. The original has a stated 90s feel to it while not necessarily looking dated now. (More of a certain vintage, than dated, in my mind. You can tell it was designed in the 90s, but that's part of the charm.) The current logo is an overwrought, too-detailed drawing of the original logo. I'm not even arguing that the 90s logo is the pinnacle, but what they have now certainly isn't an improvement.

I didn't notice too much of a mismatch between the blues on the Lions helmet and jersey/pants, but I think the one thing I miss from the old uniforms was the grey facemasks. I definitely don't hate the blue masks with this new set, but they soften up what used to be a tougher looking helmet to me. I don't know, something about that lighter blue makes some of the helmets look more like gumball helmets or something to me.

I just hate these stripeless pants, man. I know it's nitpicky or whatever. Old man yells at cloud stuff. But these ruin the entire uniform for me.  I hope they change again in 5 years.

Them changing again in five years does not guarantee they will put a stripe on the pants.

Hard disagreement from me.

1) Practically speaking, the helmet shade is too light to contrast properly with the silver... that's a major problem when those are your only two colors. The 90's jerseys had this same problem; anytime the silver touched the blue directly (like on the number outlines), it blended together:

It's funny how the helmets used to have royal blue decals much darker than the jerseys, and now that problem is now reversed... anyway, modern recreations of that uniform don't have that problem:

2) The helmet blue is too into the Carolina blue category, which wouldn't be a problem, but considering the Panthers also use silver helmet and a big cat logo, some differentiation between the two teams is good:

If I'm going to delineate between NFL blues this is how I would sort them (from lightest to darkest):

Titans

Chargers

Panthers

---

Lions (sweet spot)

---

Rams

Colts

Giants

For those reasons, the uniform shade of blue is nearly perfect for me... Nike should be commended. It's the facemask paint and decal printing that needs to be adjusted.. and luckily, that's possible without altering any parts of the actual uniform as teams swap out decals and facemasks regularly (though they won't).

From the Uniwatch comments (so take it with the grain of salt)

Quote

You’re correct, the helmet decals and facemask are Carolina Blue, not Honolulu blue.
Honolulu Blue is apparently hard to color match exactly with the rubber coatings on the facemasks, so they are using the same color as UNC. They made the decals match that color to make the helmet look more cohesive.
And to nip it in the bud, Nike has nothing to do with helmets/facemasks/decals, so they aren’t to blame.

Honestly, if that is indeed the case, the Lions should have kept the silver facemasks and then added the blue ones down the road when they were finally able to get a match, rather than intentionally mismatching the blues on purpose

I don’t hope they do a complete overhaul in five years. I just hope they add stripes to the pants and contrasting, non-white socks for each pair.

Yeah I don't really buy that they couldn't get the correct color paint for the facemask in 2024.  And I don't think the decals are "Carolina Blue" either.

These aren't the same blue

If they can make Tulane's sky blue face masks (different than the Lions blue) I bet you they can make pretty much any shade of blue you asked for:

Noticed this when they were coming out of the tunnel.  I was shocked and hoped it was just lighting.  Didn’t watch the game…was it noticeable in live action?
