John Deere rips off the Cyclones?

unless todd did the john deere one too, that is one hell of a rip off logo

Aren't there rules about self-plagerism? -- I don't think a designer owns the rights to his own logos after he designs them for a company/team.

If he was paid for the Brooklyn logo and the logo is considered "work for hire", the team owns it. He could have specifically reserved copyright ownership to himself as part of any contract however, although that's rarely done. If it was a pro bono gift (i.e. he's "lending" his design), I think he retains ownership and can repurpose it as he wishes. Keep in mind that I'm not a lawyer in real life, I just play one on the internet.

Interesting point.... I had always thought the logo would be the property of the club or the league. Then again, there is that John Foggerty story where his record company sued him for composing a song that sounded close to another somg he wrote (???)

I saw, I came, I left.

Yes I was thinking that -- they ruled in Fogerty's favour saying he couldn't help sounding like himself.

But this is a pretty obvious direct copy. Maybe Radom didn't even design this John Deere one.

I read an interesting article in a design magazine once, written by a lawyer. Apparently once you've sold your design to someone and they assume ownership of the copyright, you are technically breaking the law by reproducing your own work in your portfolio or website without asking permission.

That is true. But most standard logo contracts contain a portfolio license agreement back to the designer. Mine do.

Man. Nothing escapes the watchful eyes of this board. I'd say that is really a bit too close for comfort.

What exactly is this "Going Yard" logo for? A promotion or something? I can't find anything on it on Google. Perhaps if it is a promotion being held in conjunction with the Cyclones or their league, could they have given them permission to do something like this?
