People rooting for more than one team?

Why does there have to be rules for fandom? I find it perfectly acceptable to have a favorite team, but then root for another if your team's not playing.

Am I simply supposed to watch the NBA playoffs with indifference since the Timberwolves aren't participants? No, I'll choose a team I otherwise like. I'm rooting for the Suns AND the Pacers.

Treacherous, isn't it.

My Twins were knocked out of the playoffs. So I started rooting for Boston last year. Does that make me a "bandwagoneer," as so many of you vilify? Or am I just someone who finds a game more entertaining when I have someone to pull for?

I can see how it may be irritating, as I'm sure it was to Yankees fans last fall, to see so many people become "new" fans of a hot team. I didn't turn around and declare myself a Red Sox fan. But i certainly wouldn't fault people for falling into this circumstantial attraction.

Read the other posts, nobody said anything against pulling for someone when your team gets knocked out, it's when you cross the line with "My Sawx won the Series" acting like you were there from the beginning. Not saying YOU did, but bandwagon hopping needs to go the way of astroturf and die the fluff out.

My thinking has always been it is fine to root for more than one team in each sport as long as they are in differnt league or conferences. I really don't understand how you can root for teams in the same division.

If you're an Ohio State AND Michigan fan...then you've got serious problems!

What if you live in Colorado and you're an Avalanche fan and Red Wings fan?

I actually know a handful of guys in Colorado that are Red Wings fans, so I guess you wouldn't be alone. However, I don't recommend it.

So the only real distinction is in my level of enthusiasm for a team that's not "my" team?

I quietly cheer for the Red Sox, and that's OK. But some guy really gets into it, behaves like he's a lifelong fan, and he's doing something wrong?

I'm not about to quibble with other people's annoyances. To each their own.

I just don't see "bandwagon jumping" as some pandemic that needs stamping out. But it sure does provide a nice soap box for those "true" fans.

As a teacher I see many students who do the bandwagen jumping. Example when the Cowboys were winning Super Bowls there were many Dallas jerseys and jackets around school. The same goes for when the A's were in 3 straight World Series.

MLB - The Blue Jays. They're the home team, and i've been a fan since i was about 6 years old. The days of Alomar, Carter and Olerud are long gone, but I've stuck with 'em through thick and thin and im glad that we've finally got another semi-competitive team with Doc, Shea, Vernon and Koskie. There no other AL team i like, but in the NL i usually root for the Marlins, because I'm a huge Delgado fan and i fell in love with their small-ball philosphy in the '03 playoffs.

NFL - The Bills. I've only really gotten into football in the last 3 or 4 years, so when i get made fun of for liking the 4x Super Bowl losers, i usually say either "i was too young to remember that" or "i wasn't a fan back then." But the Bills are again the closest team to home (only about a 40min. drive to Orchard Park), so we get all their game on TV. I also liked McGahee in college, and he is now my favourite player on my favourite team. I don't really have a solid 2nd favorite, but if the Bills aren't on, i'll usually cheer for the Browns or Seahawks. I also HATE the Dolphins and Jets, and to a lesser extent, the Pats.

NBA - The Raptors - Once again, the home team. Used to be the biggest Vinsanity fan ever. Im sure everyone knows what he did to the Raps, the city and their fans, so now i absolutely despise the guy, making the Nets my least favourite team in the league. 2nd favourite team is whatever team Steve Nash is on, which is currently PHX.

NHL - Don't really have a solid favourite here. I mostly just cheer for any of the Canadian teams, or the team with my favourite player, Paul Kariya (Ducks, now the Avs.)

we've gone through this before, but I shall retell it again...

NFL: basically the Packers and Bears are 1A and 1B on my list of favorite teams. then there's the second tier-Falcons (birth state), Titans (held over from the Oilers), and then the Eagles and Cardinals make up the third tier.

College: Wisconsin, Notre Dame and Georgia Tech. then there's another second tier split up into teams i'll follow a bit in football (North Texas) and teams I'll follow a bit in basketball (Temple, Georgetown, St. John's). Ugha can suck it and so can U of South Central and Minniesoda. also, i've always had a soft spot for the service academies and am proud to have a product of the Air Force Academy as my cousin :flagusa:

NBA: I'm sort of a closet Knicks fan, but the Bucks are my team.

MLB: Cubbie blue's in my blood and I like it. It's frustrating as hell most years, but them's the breaks.

NHL: The Avs are #1, the Sens are #2.

other sports: Columbus Crew in MLS, Rhein Fire in NFLE, Philly Wings in NLL, Essendon in Australian FL, Milwaukee Wave in MISL

How on earth is it possible to like the Packers and the Bears??? In my books that's more insane then liking the Yanks and the Sox(which yes ive seen <_< )

I agree unless you moved to a different city and root for them, and your old team then you can't have two favourite teams. Yes I always root for other teams once mine is knocked out, but theyre not my team, Id just like to see them win. ie. The Suns.

My Teams

NFL

Green Bay

MLB

Toronto

NBA

Toronto

NHL

Im not that big of a hockey fan, but I root for all Canadaan teams. Sorta like CC, or epper.

Detroit: Im just a casual fan, and i have always kind of felt sorry for them so i root for them whenever they are on.

Bucfan don't root for them because you feel bad for them when you watch them. Root for them because of their grand history of their franchise, They're not one of the original American League Teams for nothing. Also another reason to root for them is their future, trust me if it's not this year it will be next year that they win the division and hopefully the World Series.

Now onto why I root for one than one team, it has nothing to do with bandwagoning, it has to do with where I am from. I am from Flint, Michigan so I am fans of the Tigers, Redwings, Lions, and Pistons. Plus I am a diehard Michigan Wolverines Fanatic. But since I was raised in Glendale, Arizona all my life, I am also a fan of the Diamondbacks, Suns, Coyotes, and Cardinals. But since I have a degree in broadcasting from Arizona State University, and a minor in hot women ;). I am a Sun Devil fan. I will also be in Detroit this weekend to watch the Diamondbacks play the Tigers which will be exciting because this is the 4th year of going to every single game in Phoenix and Detroit. Of course i'm going for Detroit in every game.

Of course don't call me a bandwagoner either because I am far from that, I have stuck by my Tigers and even the Diamondbacks when they had their worst seasons ever. I have rooted for the Pistons ever since I can remember, and have been a Lions fan all my life even when they went 2-14. So of course I will root for 2 teams from each league, but when they play each other, I will root for the Detroit teams because I am a Detroit fan first and formost.

Ive always liked the tigers, really. The first baseball game i ever went to was a Tigers game and they got slammed like 15-2, and for some reason ive just always liked them. I really enjoy watching them play, even if they arent the best team. Out here i get Giants, A's, Cubs, and Braves games, but i really enjoy it whenever Detroit does the west coast swing. Ive been to a ton of A's Tigers games.

Oh by the way, My #1 favorite teams are the Giants, Bucs, Kings, and Flyers. In any sport if anyone is playing these teams, im rooting for them no matter what, except in baseball. In baseball if my teams are playing each other, i dont really care who wins.

I've noticed people starting to have more than one team that's "their team". When did this all start? As far as I'm concerned, you got ONE team, and that's your team for GOOD. You can have players on other teams you like/admire, maybe a team you wish success on when your team gets bounced from the playoffs, but at the end of the day, you onlu got one team that's your team, and it doesn't change unless you have a damn good reason.

This bandwagon plop needs to stop, there needs to be like a bandwagon police or something that cracks down on this shameless jocking.

Anyone else noticed an increase in bandwagoners?

Grow up.

I can see if live in say Montana or something, not having to have specific allegiance to any one team, but if you live in a built up city with sports franchises that have been around since before you can remember OR BORN! like Boston youre teams should be the RED SOX, the BRUINS, the CELTICS, the PATRIOTS, and ifyoure wierd like me, THE REVOLUTION, and those arent youre teams just because they're really good. I would be loyal to the sox if they went 60-102. Its a matter of where you live, but if you live in a city where there are no sports..that city and its non-fans dont deserve a team and they should all be blown up inside Olympic stadium. All i'm really trying to say is that you pick one team to really be behind and then maybe have a wierd subtlty of a preference, ya know the Expos if you live in Boston. But these idiots who as soon as they see a teams uniform jump on their bandwagon or have more teams on their siggy than are in this website, with Red Sox, Yankees, Dodgers, Giants, Colts, and Falcons grow up, because you root for a team, not their uniforms, stadium, or logo. :cursing:

I grew up in Atlanta, so my teams are The Falcons and the Braves..but I'll root for about any NL team (except Cardinals and Cubs), and I'll root for a few football teams when my Falcons are A) Screwed or B) Having a losing season.

I still love my Falcons, but rooting for the Panthers, which were established when I lived in North Carolina, is perfectly ok.

I feel the same way. That's the only team in the NFC south I feel some sort of affection towards, I absolutely HATE the other two. Here's why

Bucs: Their fans are obnoxious as hell (When it comes to the internet anywayz [bucsfan is an exemption]), and acted like they owned the place the year after they won the SB, which ended up being a no playoff year for them, and its gone to hell ever since

Saints: They've sucked forever.

And without further ado, my favorite teams:

NFL: Falcons

MLB: Braves

NHL: Thrashers

NBA: Anybody but the Hawks <_<

Case and point: the number of people that suddenly joined "Red Sox Nation" during September and October last year.

For me it's all the hometown teams.

Hey, the only reason I was rooting for the Sox last year was because they kicked the holy hell out of the Yankees. I went back to not caring for the Sox anymore the second the World Series began. :D

basically, it's due to upbringing...I used to watch the Bears with my grandpa when I was little and gradually started watchin the Pack too (on my own). them's two things I miss every day, grandpa and being a lineman. in a small way, i guess you could say that's why I'm half and half to this day.
