Well, Roberto Clemens, we the CCSLC people would retire YOUR number here. :P

BTW, now thinking it better, it isn't a bad idea... we should starting to retire "numbers" of the best known (I mean, "famous") CCSLC members. Each one of them must tell us what number is his favorite... and we'll retire it.

I'm going to drop some strange but true parallels between myself and Mr.Clemente for your emtertainment.I even wrote a paper on this in college.

I am actually named after Clemente. He was my dad's favorite baseball player and pushed my mom for "Robert" over "Matthew" and "Steve/Steven".

Before I knew where my name came from my friends in elementary school called me "Roberto".They also called me "Roberta",but that's beside the point.

Most of my baseball career from little league to the semi-pro Crossett Mariners I played right field. The exception was one season I played 1st,and another 2 seasons I played 3rd.

I wore and wear to this day #21 whenever I play some kind of organized sport.

We were both born on August 18th.

I only became aware of all these parallels about 4-5 years ago when a friend I played ball with pointed it out.

I own a #31 Pirates authentic alternate because if I ever did play for the Pirates I would not be allowed to wear #21.

I voted "no" in this poll.

I voted no as well. I agree that the Jackie Robinson retiring has the potential to cause a very slippery slope.

Personally, I am comfortable with Robinson's because it goes WAY beyond baseball. He was the first non-white player and he endured an awful lot. However, MLB has to stay tough and say "that's it" or I'll be lobbying for retirement of the numbers of all members of the 1991 Twins (No more #13 in honor of Mike Pagliarullo).

I also disagree with the NHL and #99. I loved the great one as much as anyone, but some people think Orr or Howe were better--should their #s be retired?

Disclaimer: If this comment is about an NBA uniform from 2017-2018 or later, do not constitute a lack of acknowledgement of the corporate logo to mean anything other than "the corporate logo is terrible and makes the uniform significantly worse."

Jackie Robinson wasn't the first non-White player, but the first Negro. Native Americans are non-White, right? Louis Sockalexis played for the Cleveland Spiders from 1897-1899.

I don't know that #42 is that much of a slippery slope.

Jackie Robinson is being recognized for the impact of his life and career on American society, even more than what he did on the field. He was a superb 2B, but part of the reason he was the first man to break baseball's color line was because of his temperament and his personality. There were more talented players in the Negro Leagues at the time, but it was felt that very few of them could have endured everything that Robinson had to put up with. What he did opened doors for hundreds of men to walk through, and he put up with all kinds of abuse to make the idea of black ballplayers acceptable in the majors.

Roberto Clemente was a tremendous ballplayer who died tragically at a young age. He was a wonderful humanitarian. MLB already named a prestigious award for him. But he didn't achieve the kind of lasting societal impact for generations to follow that Jackie Robinson did. He was a Pirate, and the Pirates rightly retired his #21. But it's not needed for other teams to retire #21.

And there was no reason to retire #99 - that comes across as more of a "Thank You", and cheapens baseball's gesture to Jackie Robinson. What societal causes to Gretz advance? Canon cameras? Marrying a smokin'-hot mediocre actress?

In order for the Mets' run of 12 losses in 17 games to mean something, the Phillies still had to win 13 of 17.

There was no need to retire #99... no player would ever have dared wear that number.

yeah somebody would have just so they could say they wore the same number as gretzky

But somebody else did wear that number other than Gretzky--so he could say his # is retired too--

His career was nowhere close to the impact of Gretzky's

I know some of you know who he is...

Wilfred Paiement (Better known as "Wilf")

I 'm trying to find apciture of him wearing 99

As much as I believe that Clemente was one of the greatest players to play the game, and one of the greatest people to play the game. I do not believe he comes anywhere near the stature of Jackie Robinson.

Jackie Robinson ended a apartheid that had lasted since the 1880s. He faced tremendous adversity. He helped bring about the integration of America's past time 7 years before Brown vs. Board of Education, 8 years before Rosa Parks refused to leave the bus and 16 years before "I have a Dream". His impact on American society, not just Baseball, is huge. He was arguably one of the 10 most influential Americans of the 20th century.

Roberto Clemente, as great as he was and as iconic as he is, just doesn't measure up.

I think that, instead, they should make the "Roberto Clemente Award" (The MLB award for humanitarian work and community service) a bigger deal. Have commericials showing how the canidates have helped people, give it out during the World Series with lots of hoopla.......

He's saying the award should be made a bigger deal, not that MLB needs to create one...clearly if he knows what the award is for, he knows it exists.

I think universally retiring numbers is a bad idea..what does it accomplish?

clemente is one of the best of all time and also was a great person and humanitarian..no one disputes that and this wouldn't make what he did more important

the award honors him more because it actually acknowledges something significant.

no pirate should ever wear his number..we have that already

Wasn't there someone who picked 98 because he thought of himself as "almost as good as Gretzky" ?

Of course I can't imagine anyone wearing 99... or even 66 (because of Lemieux, not because it's 99 upside down...) . ^_^
