50 TEAM NFL

MDesign

Recommended Posts

I was looking at the map created by axlrush and it got me thinking. Would it be possible that someday the NFL will have a presence in all 50 states...at least 1 team. And if so, what would the names, logos, and unis possibly be?

Maybe we can start a design contest for this if you all want to do a concept for your state. Just a thought.

Going over the list of states without the NFL, there are too many of them. You'd have to do relocation of teams also. IMO, areas like New England are so small that a team in Boston (Foxboro) can cover an area of NH, VT, MA, ME, CT, and RI. Some places without NFL will never get NFL (like Wyoming, Montana, the Dakotas, and Alaska)

On the other side of this, some states really should have more than one team (ie. California.) It would be tough to lose a SF 49ERS or an Oakland Raider team because there is so much history, and I would hate to the San Diego Chargers leave.

While I do not believe there is a need to make it so, especially under the league's current operating model, a 50-team NFL COULD be a reality based on the amount of markets within North America. As previous posters have pointed out, this would not equate to a 50 team, "one for each state" scenario, though.

Think of it like this. In addition to the 32 teams currently existing in the NFL, there are 15 other North American markets that support major league sports (MLB, NBA, NHL, MLS). These are the markets:

1. Memphis

2. Orlando

3. Columbus

4. Raleigh-Durham

5. Sacramento

6. San Antonio

7. Portland, OR

8. Vancouver, BC

9. Salt Lake City/Utah

10. Los Angeles

11. Toronto

12. Edmonton

13. Ottawa

14. Calgary

15. Montreal

Add to those locations those sites which FORMERLY hosted a major league franchise (Hartford, Winnipeg, Quebec City), sites that curently host CFL franchises (Hamilton, Saskatchewan), a few other key markets that are on the cusp of major league status (Oklahoma City, Las Vegas, Mexico City, Monterrey), and finally consider additional franchises for megalopolises (2 franchises for LA, a second Chicago franchise or a third NY franchise) and you've got well over 50 teams for the NFL.

Again, I'm not advocating such a thing; there are too many issues with having such a large unwieldy league. I'm just saying that the markets are there.

It is what it is.

A 50 team NFL is not possible right now. The only way it would happen in the next few decades is if they expanded globally. There are a few places that *might* be able to get a team (Los Angeles obviously), but I don't there are 18 places that *might* be able to get a team. NFL teams are extremely expensive. The thought of Winnipeg or Regina in the NFL is laughable. Winnipeg just spent all they had building a nice, new hockey arena, and they still can't get their NHL team back, and NHL teams are probably about 5 times less valuable than NFL teams on average.

Most importantly... if every possible market had an NFL team, where would the crappy teams threaten to relocate to???

I could see, in a couple of decades, a 40-team NFL spread through North America. But no more than that.

When you say "small", I assume you're not talking about distance. In actuality, the distance from the northernmost point in Maine to Connecticut's southeastern border with New York is roughly equal to the distance from New York City to Charlotte, North Carolina... or from Los Angeles to Salt Lake City. Hell, the distance from Maine's northernmost point to southernmost point is approximately the same distance as a drive from Chicago to St. Louis.

If you spread the NFL into 50 teams, most teams would suck except like 2.

Yeah. Can you even imagine how huge the NFL draft would be? plop. I could probably be drafted if that were to ever happen

teams would be alot worse, but instead of 50 teams in the NFL, you could have a minor league NFL, so smaller cities could hold teams.

For instance the Seahawks could have a minor league team in

A. Portland, OR

or

B. Vancouver, BC

probably Portland.

Buffalo-Rochester

San Diego-Los Angeles???

SF- Reno

Oakland- Fresno/Stockton

Arizona- Las Vegas

Houston- San Antonio

maybe....

it would give the NFL an idea of which cities could be suited as a possible future NFL franchise, and its a good way to make some dought on ticket sales, merch, etc, reach out to communtities, and put those 5th stringers on the field and get tem some expierience.

ok, all points made make sense. Especially about everyone sucking the big one. However I find the quoted idea very interesting.

Maybe it would even work for players like Clarett who think they can make it in the NFL like a farm league call up, call down kind of thing.

Cool idea.

Yeah, but Mass, Conn, and RI are all pretty close to one another
