uniguy22
This board is absolutely fantastic but one thing has always bothered me. That is signatures. I have turned signatures off because a lot of them are WAY TOO BIG, and, some people have more than one signature. Recently there have been a lot of great sigs made, and I'd love to see them and use them. What I am suggesting is that we have some rules about signatures. Maybe a size limit of 500 X 90, and limit signatures to only one. I know the mods are very busy with other things, so if they don't have the time to do this, maybe we can just govern these rules ourselves. If we see a sig that is too big, we can give a friendly reminder to the user to change the size, that way we can all enjoy the great sigs that are being made. I'm sure some users feel the same about sigs as me, and I'd like to get some feedback. Do you think this is a good idea?

uniguy22
how can you change the size of sigs Vitamin D provides some excellent points below. Your devils sig is perfectly fine for me, 500 X 90. You don't really need that touchdown sig.
VitaminD
how can you change the size of sigs Plenty of ways. Most of them involve self-control.1. Most of the more prolific designers of sigs on these boards (ICS, LEWJ, kingssss and Nesi come to mind) make their designs a certain size and ask that their designs not be altered. Honor that request.2. If you make your own sigs (I make many of my own), make a conscious effort to make the sig large enough so that your design can be seen but not so hideously oversized that it fills the entire screen. My personal maximum height is [EDIT: 250; see further posts for correction] pixels. So shrink the picture(s) you're using, type in a smaller font, cut down on the backgrounds and details. Make it work in a manageable size.3. One picture at a time. Common sense? Sure, but how many people can't help themselves. Get a .gif animator program if you just gotta gotta gotta show the world all 24 sports teams that you love the most; they're free and available in a few places on the Web.4. Use good judgment. Ideally, a signature is just that - a closing to your post. It's not the featured element of your post. What you write above your sig is the crucial part. As such, the sig shouldn't be larger than the body of your text. I know this is incredibly hard for some people who feel compelled to share every "Yeah! Me too!" and "That jersey sucks!!" thought that comes into their head, but it can be done.If some of us could rein ourselves in, exercise a little common sense and put some thought into what was written and what was displayed, nobody would have to reach for the "Ignore Sigs" feature. Discrim
self control is good. it's also usually learned the hard way, like when you get sick after eating the whole box of minty chocolate cookies in just about one sitting. shoot, I used to love those kind of cookies, but after that incident I can't stand more than three at a time. I'm just now getting my taste for regular oreos back because of a similar (albeit more recent) binge.

OHLArenaGuide
I would suggest to anyone that if you set your monitor size to 800 X 600 and your signature spills over to the side of the browser window, your sig is too wide. The ones that really burn me are the ones that resize my 1024 X 768 screen though.
CS85
Honestly I just got tired of the sigs. I like knowing allegiances to teams and stuff, but it slows down the site and I didn't join here to find out what teams you all love (although the sports forum will let you know very quickly where allegiances lie), so IMHO you're better off just turning them off. On other forums I use a maximum 400x125, it's a nice compact size that gets the point across without saying HEY LOOK AT MY AWESOME HUGE SIG! ProvidenceRI
People are searching this site for information and witty banter. This site is fantastic.BUTNobody cares about your banner/signature other than you. It shouldn't be any taller than 30 pixels. Please do everybody favor and reduce your signature size. But yes...Your sigs probably shouldn't be wider than 600 pixels. That's a bit much, right?Otherwise, I think it's obvious what is too big and too small. Some people really just can't help themselves. As for my own, I actually don't like that these flags wave -- I just haven't found something comparable.
fiasco!
i have my monitor set at 1600x1200 and there are still sigs that spill over.
paynomind
I enjoy the signatures. A lot. I think turning them off is missing a lot of the point of reading people's posts. But there are some that got ginormous. Like that Stephenson high school one for a while. winters in buffalo
I don't mind a wide sig; it's rare that one reaches all the way across my screen. It's the tall ones that irk me. If I have to scroll to see your whole sig, you have issues.

You don't really need that touchdown sig. True, since it's documenting the fictional event of Jake Plummer throwing a touchdown pass that actually counts FOR his team and not against it. lilgump
I use 800 X 600, probably cause my monitor is crappy mc crap, when we used my dads monitor from school, we had it up to 1600 x 1200, that was nice.
HurricaneDavid
My personal maximum height is 400 pixels. 400 pixels is my definition of hideously oversized. Anything more than 250 is ridiculous. And this doesn't apply just to images... I really don't need to be reminded 10 times a day that Karol Wojtyla is STILL dead. Give me a break. And this doesn't apply just to images... I really don't need to be reminded 10 times a day that Karol Wojtyla is STILL dead. Give me a break. Wow... you're right, HDave. My numbers were off.I seemed to remember that my current sig (Flyers retired numbers) was about 400 pixels when I designed it. But it's about the same size as your Lake Placid one. I measured them both; neither one is 150 pixels high. So, 400 pixels is nearly triple the Lake Placid hockey ticket and my Flyers' numbers sigs. I stand corrected - after further review, 250 pixels is more than tall enough to get your point across.
