Oklahoma City . . . Sonics?

Are you kidding me? If theres any area that can support multiple sports teams that dont already have them, the bay area is the place. Look at SJs support of the Sharks, I doubt theyd have any issue supporting an NBA team. Although I will say San Fran would probably work better than SJ.

Isn't six pro teams in four leagues enough for you Bay Area folk? Spread the love around.

No dammit!!! Never!!! :P

No to NBA in San Jose. All the arena owners are looking for is more dedicated dates for the arena. And if Ellison were truly interested, by all means, buy the Sharks. :P San Jose LOVES the Sharks and I seriously doubt they would go for the basketball when that thing resembling a semi-pro basketball team playing in Oakland can barely do well themselves. HOWEVER, if the NBA played in the summer, then maybe I can see it, but I can't during hockey season.

Well looks like the Sonics owners chose Renton, a city about 13 miles south east of Seattle as the new home for the Sonics. Details here.

I suppose this isn't a huge deal to me, I mean, I only go to about one sonics game a year, and so an extra 20 minute drive wouldnt bother me a ton.. And I think that most Sonics fans will be happy just out of the team not moving out of state. I do find it nice that they are building it near a Boeing Plant, where their nickname pretty much originated. And plus, It would be great if they could get Boeing to buy the rights to the Areana.. I think it would be very fitting.

we take ferries, so it kinda screws us for sonics games. but i guess its better than OKC.

Frees up Oklahoma City for...well, the team they already have, I guess.

Slow down there, Chief. Just because the Sonics have picked a site doesn't mean the thing is going to get built. I'd say the chances of OKC getting Seattle's team are still better than half.

Really gonna put the pressure on Stern in that regards. In all honesty that was a failing franchise in New Orleans with minimal fan support and small corporate presence.

Again...only thing keeping the Hornets in NO is a strong lease and certain PR problems that would come from taking a franchise away from people who don't support it and giving it to people that do.

oi - traffic from downtown Seattle and some of the more northern suburbs (nwtrailtrekker, where are you riding the ferry from? I have family on bainbridge) could really, really suck for weekday evening games...but it still is in the greater seattle area. Better than the central time zone.

Bummer. I don't know if I'll be in Seattle after the move takes place, but the KeyArena is visible from my apartment. It's nice having an arena in the neighborhood, even if I don't quite go as often as possible.

Hockey is cheaper and it's still the same building. :D

Dude, the traffic sucks no matter where you are in Seattle. The "S" curves, 520 floating bridge, downtown Seattle, it's all crap. I'm still not convinced they're staying, but I'm a lot more encouraged than I was last summer. Living in Renton, having the Sonics move there would be a huge boon for the community. We've already got the Seahawks, and if they build the new facility where I think they're gonna build it, that area will transform radically. As long as they stay in the area, it's all good.

Where in the hell in San Fran would an NBA team play? No arena, no arena in the foreseeable future. Aside from the Giants (which actually draw more to the suburban south of SF), the city is not a real mecca of true blue sports fanatics.

Bingo!

Where to begin?

* The land that Sonics owner Clay Bennett has targeted for a new arena isn't necessarily available for sale to the Sonics. Boeing owns the parcel of approximately 22 acres, but a Dallas, Texas-based developer holds the right of first refusal to buy the land. Said developer, Harvest Partners, says that it is moving forward with plans to build a shopping center on the land.

* Bennett told the State of Washington's Senate Ways and Means Committee that he expects the public to provide $400-million of the arena project's estimated $500-million price-tag, with the team receiving the majority of the revenue generated by the new facility. Bennett's reasoning for this is that he will take responsibility for securing $100-million in private investments. Further, he believes that his time and the $350-million that his Oklahoma City-based ownership group spent in acquiring the team last year should be considered part of their investment in the facility.

* Bennett wants the State of Washington and City of Renton to provide the money without a public vote on the plan.

* Bennett claims ignorance to how adamantly opposed the public is to financing construction of yet another sports facility in the State of Washington, but has said that without a new arena he may be forced to move the Sonics to another region.

* The proposed tax package that would generate the public funds for the arena project will be virtually impossible to pass without the support of Frank Chopp, the Speaker in the State of Washington's House of Representatives. Chopp has gone on the record as saying his caucus isn't interested in Bennett's plan and that the money from the tax package should go towards education and health care programs.

* If the State of Washington Legislature were to somehow manage to authorize the tax package without seeking a public vote on the matter, opponents of the plan have vowed to file an initiative to block the deal. Further, King County Council Chairman Larry Phillips has notified state government leaders that he'll block the increases to county taxes that the plan would call for.

If you ask me, Bennett is already personally committed to moving the franchise to Oklahoma City and is simply going through the motions. To that end, he's proposed a plan that he knows has absolutely no chance of being successfully acted upon. The moment it fails, he can petition the NBA for permission to move the team.

Bottom line? Regardless of how Bennett and the duped civic officials in Renton are spinning this, I'd say that the Sonics are several steps closer to Oklahoma City than they were before this so-called "plan" was unveiled.

Move the Charlotte Bobcats to Oklahoma City.

Yeah, so they can get another expansion team and move to the beautiful city of East Chicago, Indiana.

Hey, if Oklahoma City can get an NBA team, then what's stopping anyone?

Move the Charlotte Bobcats to Oklahoma City.

1) Politically impossible

2) Would PERMANENTLY nuke a market for the NBA: They could NEVER EVER put another team there, especially after the city of Charlotte DID build a new arena for the team.

Even though Bob Johnson is running that franchise like a circus. Almost makes Shinn look competent. Almost.
