since when did Paul from the Wonder Years play for the Chiefs?

Some day rap/reality tv star Bone Crusher signed with the Vikings

Also the same day that a young Steve Levy played for the Packers.

Well, the first version of the Fun Book (1978) is available on Ebay a couple of places:

The Great NFL Fun Book 1978? football PICTURES STARS

and...

The Great NFL Fun Book

Here is a pic of the cover from that second listing. I don't know if ebay allows me to direct link to the pic, so I will just provide the address:

If one of you purchases it, please have a scanner available :)

Oh man Gumball Helmets!!! I STILL collect those puppies.

I think I ditched my helmets when I got married, sadly. There was one gum machine in Westport, CT, that was somehow broken, and you could keep turning the handle and get as many of those puppies you wanted. For me it was like when a dog finds some food and won't stop eating it until it's all gone. I remember telling my Mom I had a lot of quarters.

My first one - the green Jets helmet the first year they had the post-Namath identity.

Man I used to collect those all the time, more modern as this was the early nineties. I would go up to the grocery store by my house with some quarters and get some. Funny because I would sometimes stick the decals on the wrong way. I got quite goo at it after a while though. They replaced them with like little rubber crap dudes though. I was sad. I still have all of mine, and will keep them till I die.

I spent my entire youth trying to collect an entire set of gumball helmets, but there were certain teams I could never get. I was never able to get a hold of a Steelers, 49ers, Seahawks, Browns, Chiefs, Buccaneers, Cardinals or Patriots helmet.

I also remember a local supermarket switching over to college teams, but they weren't there long enough to collect more than a couple. UCLA, Nebraska and Wisconsin were the only I can remember having.

I think I was able to get all the teams except for the Titans, and Texans(duh!) I do have a lot of Oilers helmets though. I don't think I was able to get the Ravens either. Do have the Browns before they moved. I also was never able to get the new Broncos helmet, I do have their old ones.

Well, I only have some 1973 NFL Programs sitting in my desk at work, so you'll have to wait until tomorrow.

Sweet,i can't wait

Sorry, the original owner of this must have been a Bills fan. Note the "Boston" Patriots! Also, the Chargers helmet is portrayed with collegiate blue outline of the bolt, which I thought was really black.

[nerd cap on]A couple of things always bugged me about these graphics:

1 - Why is the Broncos center stripe portrayed as blue, not reddish orange?

2 - Why can they put a dividing white stripe between the Dolphins aqua and orange, but not between the Patriots red and blue.

Thanks bro.

I'm trying to remember, did the Steelers helmet come with only one logo sticker?

Yep, as seen here http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewI...p;rd=1&rd=1 [cheap plug]

Accually, yes it does. The other sticker is just a blank black sticker though. Its kinda funny, because even though its blank, its still got the TM logo on it.

Wow, this thread REALLY brings back some memories.

I had the NFL Fun Book II AND the gumball helmets. In fact, I was just looking for an old box of stuff that would have the the uniform cutouts from the Fun Book. I haven't found the box yet (hopefully my wife didn't toss it out)

I can still remember mixing and matching the face masks on the gumball helmets. You could come up with eome pretty crazy combinations.

off topic, but i freaking love the silver oilers helmets.

best helmets in football history.

Speaking of those silver helmets....

PANTONE! How did the silver helmet the oilers use differ from the Lions and Cowboys' silvers (Or "Cowboys Metalic Blue.") ? It looks to me like it's a little more blue than the Cowboys.

I still have the fun book, but likely in a box in the basement.

For a long time, I did collect the mini-helmets, then lost them. While I was working at a grocery store, they did have a machine for the mini-helmets for a while. After work, I would put a quarter in the machine and take one out. I happened to pick up three at the time (from 1995 to 1998): Seahawks, Patriots, and Chargers (not sure now, but the Seahawks are a definite).

I actually don't have a clue. The Oilers' Silver helmets pre-date the use of Pantone colors, so old photographs (or, if someone had some actual game-worn equipment) are all we really have to go on.

However, I've got a GREAT old color photograph (close-up even) of the Silver Oilers; I'll get it scanned and post it here tomorrow...

I gotsta get to bed...

OK...still need to do something about getting the pic up here, but here's what the colors looked like (to me, anyway):

HoustonOilers_FRC_1971_SOL.jpg

I think it was just a standard Silver (877 C)...however, the Columbia Blue (called "Silver-Blue" in a 1972 Style Guide I've got scans of), was a bit different than it ended up being...

while we're on the topic, how much has the columbia blue changed from the inaugural season in 1960 up until today with the titans?

sometimes, it seems downright royal... while other seasons, it looked like the traditional columbia blue.

btw, can't wait for the big photo of the silver oilers. i don't know what it is about those uniforms, but i just love the way silver looked on the oilers.
