Spring Training Photos - New Hats and Jerseys

from what it looks like most of the teams have two different colors on their hats/ side panels.. the teams that don't are

Red Sox, Yankees, White Sox, Phillies, Marlins, Astros, Athletics, Twins, Giants

I sort of wish their was more of a consistancy with all the hats.. so all of them had a alternate color on the side panels. (such as teal on the marlins, orange on the giants.. ect)

The Tribe hat is like that too.5273_ClevelandIndians_LG.png

Both Boston BP hats are the same way too

The Angels cap doesnt look to have the Flaps either, nor the pipping that goes with it.

Ok so theres something REEEEEEEEEEEELY fishy going on with the new Angels BP caps. I was at the mall today checking out some more of the new BP caps and when I got to the Angels caps they were DEFINATELY the new style and cut but half of them had the stupid ear flap, the other half didnt. And like I said, the ones without the flap were DEFINATELY the new cut. Im wondering if they started producing the BP caps and halfway through decided to toss on the stupid ear flap, and only like half of the angels caps ended up with the flap. Hmmm. Very interesting. :therock:

We covered this up-thread. The Angels cap in the picture is of last season's cap. The new one has the same side panels just like everyone else. Starstruck, MLB Shop, etc, confirmed this.

The new cap and the old cap are both essentially the same style and cut, but the only real difference is the side panels. That store you went to had the two styles (old & new) mixed on the shelf. That's inattention/laziness on the part of the store employees.

No. Your incorrect sir. I can say with 100% certainty that BOTH caps I saw yesterday were of the new style. Everything down to the material used was of the new style. I worked at a Lids out in SoCal last year and sold a ton of the old Angels BP caps so I have a pretty good idea of what they look like.

Scoscia at Spring Training:

Something unusual is afoot. I refuse to believe that the Angels, of all teams, would get special permission to wear and sell modified versions of the new cap and that the other 29 teams would get stuck with the same template. So either Moreno got special permission from MLB to be unique or the Angels circumvented MLB and told Majestic to lose the side panels on their own.

With all the sportswriters making a stink over the new caps, maybe some sharp reporter will notice that the Angels and their opponents have different-styled caps next week when the games start and get to the bottom of this.

Go Astros!

Go Texans!

Go Rockets!

Go Javelinas!

I didn't want to add another giant quote string at the top of this post, but it references the Scioscia photograph above: if the photo is from this years spring training, he could be wearing old gear. If you look at the collar and zipper, you'll see the warmup he's wearing isn't current style either. There are photos of Jay Gibbons at Orioles spring training this month (he's wearing the new cap) wearing that old warmup, too. I also remember pictures of Sammy Sosa in his last spring training as a Cub, wearing a discontinued warmup.

So, I wouldn't jump to conclusions about the Angels cap yet.

The pic is from Yahoo's Angels' gallery. All the Angels were wearing the same cap as Scoscia in the other pics. As of yesterday, anyway.

You're right. Maybe the Angels have gone Yankee$ on us, and have decided to buck the trend on BP caps and warmup jackets!

Apparently, the Royals don't like the hats either...

From Sam Mellinger of the KC Star

SURPRISE, Ariz. | The idea, you have to assume, is to keep the players as cool as possible while here in the desert. That and make money, of course.

The result? Well, let?s just say baseball?s new polyester fabric hats ? lighter and designed to keep sweat off the eyes ? are about as popular in big-league clubhouses as cauliflower at first-grade lunch.

?I hate this,? Royals manager Buddy Bell says. ?One of the key things is we look good. This doesn?t help.?

?It?s the wings here,? says Royals pitcher Jimmy Gobble, who goes on to make fun of the silver on the sides.

The Royals say they?ll only use the new hats during spring training and regular-season batting practice, so nobody?s getting too worked up about it. Still, the lids have been the butt of daily jokes that Chris Rock would appreciate.

Royals general manager Dayton Moore plays it conservatively ? ?I?m a traditionalist,? he says, ?I like traditional things? ? but it?s hard to think of anything more widely disliked or made fun of than the new-age hats.

Part of it, surely, is baseball?s love of all things old school. And part of it, surely, is the charm of the wool hats worn during regular-season games and sold at sporting-goods stores everywhere.

Hats have become one of the game?s leading fashion statements, right up there with eye black and high socks. Steve Kline never washes or replaces his lid, so by the end of the summer it?s covered with enough gunk you expect a swarm of flies.

Anthony Reyes? cap looks so fresh, the bill so straight it looks as if he had to be talked into taking the tag off. C.C. Sabathia likes to tilt his to the side just so, Ken Griffey likes to wear his backward, and Joe Torre likes to rest it on top of his head so it looks as if he could hide a grapefruit up there.

These synthetic hats ? they just don?t have the same charm. And it?s not just in Royals camp.

?These are just terrible,? Kline says. ?They fall back over your face, they?re too big, they stretch out too far, they don?t stay on. They?re terrible.?

Oakland slugger Nick Swisher has some of the same gripes ? but with a head of hair down to his shoulders it?s more personal.

?Bald guys might like ?em, or maybe they stay on better? he says. ?I?ve got such long hair, they just fly right off. You start running, the wind catches them, and they fly right off.?

The hats do feel lighter, especially on your head, but most of the players say their heads don?t stay any cooler ? which contradicts the stated purpose of the hat redesign.

?People think they?re reinventing the wheel with these things,? Kline says. ?Just let the hats be like they were back in the day.?

As for the look, you hear everything from ?too space-agey? to ?is it supposed to look like sunglasses?? to ?I don?t need racing stripes on my hat.?

Bell is more direct.

?I don?t have anything against do-rags,? he says, ?but I?ve never worn one before.?

Bell takes his off, and points to the oval slice of silver on each side, and smiles.

?That?s not our color,? he says. ?Silver?s not one of our colors.?

All this talk is done mostly in good humor. It?s not as if they?re going on strike because of it, and besides, there are worse things than having to wear a goofy hat to major-league spring training in Arizona.

But, still, Matt Tupman, a catcher who will probably open the season in Omaha, was at the mall the other day and just about fell over when he saw the caps in a store.

?You know they?re getting $28 apiece for these?? he asks. ?I went to a Lids the other day and saw that. Twenty-eight dollars. Could you imagine paying $28 for these??

So what would you pay for it? Twenty? Ten?

Five?

?I wouldn?t,? he says. ?I wouldn?t pay anything in the store. But I am happy I have one.?

These new BP hats scream NASCAR to me.

I'm sorry, but you're gonna have to explain that to me....

And I like the hats. Some teams are better than others, but I think theyre perfect for BP and spring training...

because they are a bit tacky looking and the side panels arent needed at all. and i have found them to be quite uncomfortable

Some of them aren't too bad looking. Others.. :puke:

Woah, those arent supposed to be out till the 15th of this month. I hope they bump up the release of the new game hats as well.
