You see, thats the thing that frustrates me the most. If this were Oklahoma in the same spot as Kansas right now they would probably still play for the title, just like they did a few seasons after losing to Kansas State in the Big XII title game. I still can't fathom for the life of me why certain schools get so much more of a pass than other schools, even ones in their same conference.

Which is the problem with the system. College football, ultimately, is still heavily swayed by VOTERS. I still remember when, even with the BCS, Nebraska got into the title game even after not even MAKING IT TO THEIR CONFERENCE CHAMPIONSHIP. People were more willing to give Nebraska another chance than if, say, Baylor were to lose that last game. Voters would figure that this was "finally the end of the road for the cinderella," but they would say that it was just a lapse of focus for Nebraska.

To Nebraska's credit, they were dropped in the polls after they got blown out by Colorado in that game. It took like 2-3 other teams that were in line to be #2 that also lost that weekend or the following weekend, to get Nebraska right back in the National Championship Game.

One of those #2's-to-be was Tennessee, which lost to an LSU team that went 5-3 in the SEC that season....

Here's how it works for Ohio State as I see it.

1. Missouri needs to win tonight then lose to Oklahoma in the Big XII title game. That leaves Kansas in the same position Michigan was in last season, a one-loss team that didn't win it's conference. If Kansas still gets an invite to the title game after not winning the conference then I think Michigan fans should storm BCS headquarters and have a public hanging.

2. Kansas wins tonight and loses to Oklahoma in the Big XII title game. Same scenario as above.

Or...

3. West Virginia loses to Pitt which ain't likely.

That said, the way anti-Ohio State sentiment is running rampant in the media and everywhere else right now, the only way I see any of the above scenarios resulting in Ohio State in the title game is if a plane crash takes out Kansas and West Virginia. Hawaii has a better shot at the title game at this point. I really believe that if Kansas is left standing with one-loss but didn't win the conference that we'll see the exact opposite of what happened last year. And Michigan will finally have a legitimate argument...a year after the fact.

So right now we're looking at WVU and whoever wins tonight.

I don't think it matters who wins tonight - if the winner loses the Big 12 title game, they'll drop.

Uggh, worst day of my college football life. Hopefully this can be some sort of revenge for us coming up here in the SEC Championship game.

So the polls tomorrow will have West Virginia at number one. That's pretty incredible, considering the Mountaineers were buried in the rankings and out of public consciousness after their loss at South Florida (the game they played without Pat White). They've been otherwise dominant this season (with a few squeakers), and made a definite statement today against UConn. I'd say that LSU still may be the best team in college football this year -- they're two losses came in OT -- but WVU has been playing lights-out football totally under the radar.

EDIT: Is Kansas' fight song Bolero? That's what it sounds like to me.

Kansas isn't done....yet. 31-21 in the 4th. I don't know...

All I know is, after watching the Egg Bowl yesterday, I've learned that the game is not really over until the clock says 0:00. There may be a chance alive for KU.

If they do, it's a travesty. As far as I'm concerned, based on their performance last night, Hawaii at least deserves a shot at it, if they run the table.
Perhaps so, but would it honestly surprise you if some of the BCS coaches took Hawaii out of their top 25, if only to protect BCS bids for other teams in BCS conferences?

How exactly does a team that was in the top 10 in the preseason and is currently ranked number 3 play "under the radar?"

I think if LSU were in any other conference they wouldn't be seen as "the best team in college football." I don't think there is a clear cut "best team" this year. If there were a playoff in place I don't know who the favorite would be right now. The minute you think a team has separated from the pack this season they lose the next week. I think it's great. This season has been incredible. I hate to sound like a broken record but if there were a playoff this season wouldn't have been anywhere near this exciting. Most of the upsets in the top 5 this year would have meant nothing.

West Virginia is the best team in college football...this week. All that means is that they'll lose to Pitt next week.

11-1 is nothing to take lightly.

Unless you're Ohio State. :P

Slight difference.

Mizzou ranked #3

Illinois was unranked

It's a minor nitpick I know, but, just sayin.

Illinois was 7-3 at the time and finished 9-3 and ranked. Kansas played exactly one ranked team, and lost. It's not like Ohio State lost to some 3 win team.

All I'm saying is that no one talks about West Virginia. That's all. Clearly, they were expected to be good and are good. No surprises there. But, as of this week, they're the best team in college football. And accordingly, it seems like there should have been more said about them -- at least as much was written about Oklahoma, LSU, and the rest. That's all.

I'm sure, however, we'll hear all about them this week upcoming.

A 6 point loss to the BCS #3 should hopefully still keep the Jayhawks in BCS contention. 11-1 is nothing to take lightly.

Maybe not, but it was fascinating to watch what happened when they finally played a team with a defense.

I mean no offense, they had a fine season, but KU wouldn't have been close to 11-1 playing say, an SEC schedule.
