Re-examining the Buffalo Sabres

Looks too good and makes too much sense for them to use these.

I have never liked that redone logo, the buffalo is WAY too small and looks like it's going to be sliced in half by a giant pair of scissors. It's all out of balance. The original logos' sizes was fine. Of course, I'm tired of Buffalo teams constantly having buffaloes in their teams' logos as they just aren't needed. I could go with the crossed swords alone, or the B-sword logo that's on the shoulder of this concept. That looks pretty good.

So basically its a before and after comparison to the buffaslug? :)

I still don't think the sluggalo is the best option for Buffalo, even though right now, you have to admit it does blend in well with the rest of their uniform. It's just that it seems like it's only a matter of time before the upcomming (modernized) vintage logo outsells slug merchandice, hence bringing it back to full-time status.

that logo is embarassment to the city of Buffalo. I've been a Sabres fan since the 70s and have not spent one cent on the new logo and doubt I ever will.

The 3rd jersey's must be different than the classic one's since they are keeping it a secret.

kind of curious, but have any of you ever submitted your ideas/concepts to the sabres?

i don't really have any problem with this logo. i think that there's a group of people that make fun of the "slug" appearance and alot of people just go along with it. I'm actually glad they switched from the previous sabres jersey/logo. IMO, that was the embarrassment to the franchise with the drastic color change and entire identity overhaul.

am I glad they went back to the gold/blue scheme - yes, but the jerseys are a little busy for my taste. I don't necessarily think they should go back to the early 90's style though. there's so many buffalo logos out there that it's hard to please everyone. I don't think this is the worst nhl logo either, i'm pretty sure the vancouver canucks have held that position with almost anything they churn out.

I really like the Vintage 3rd jerseys they wore prior to the edge jerseys. I sort of go through phazes of likeing and disliking the new design. In a perfect world, they will just bring back the vintage jersey as the new 3rd.

Sucked then, sucks now.

My feelings exactly. Just because it's been around for a couple of seasons, doesn't mean that my stance has softened on it. It's the ugliest logo/uniforms in the NHL, and I try to forget about its existence every chance I get (and the half-assed attempts at appeasing fans of the French Connection-era uniforms with those alts that don't match anything don't help either.).

It still stinks. It's still an issue with the forthcoming "alternate" jerseys.

Between its resemblance in style to the Buffalo Bills logo, it's lack of originality, and all the other unwanted association the logo brings with it (Slug, Hair piece, angry yellow penis, poo streak) It still hasn't sunk in with some people that the only thing that moved merchandise that logo's initial year is because the team won started 10-0 and won a President's trophy. It is a swooshy trendy piece of uncreative garbage.

It got caught up in a 'perfect storm' of Guerilla and Viral Marketing, loyal fans, and terrific play from the Sabres. Winning would sell horsecrap on a stick. This logo is just that, minus the stick...

I've clearly learned that "brand awareness" no longer needs to be marched together with positive public approval to successfully validate a logo and brand identity as a success.

js ° has still got it right or came way more close to right than the RBK drafted and driven Slug. Or even this concept...not terribly cerebral in its idea but another illustration of what should have been.

Amazing update on the original sabres logo. The Buffalo brass are mental not to go with something like this. I think the jersey could use a few nice horizontal stripes, but other than that, these look fantastic.

Well designed and effective logos shouldn't have to "grow" on you. The Buffaslug was awful two years ago, and it remains so.

Minor quibble: If you're going to use "Buffaslug" as the name on the jersey, the number should be 86. Or zero. :P

You're right, i should have. I just use "23" for all my concepts. didn't even really think about it.

A couple of things on the Slug.

1) I think that if they had just used the head and not tried to make it an "abstract" design, it would have been an unqualified success. I don't think a full body would have worked, but some kind of logical cut-off point would have made sense, like either just the head, or maybe some sort of wordmark obscuring the bottom half, making it look like it was being cut off (much like the old Carolina Panthers wordmark, where there was a cross-section of sorts).

2) If the Sabres had won the Stanley Cup that year (as they should have! ), no one would be hating on the Slug, because the logo would have been synonymous with victory (kind of like the corny Colorado Avalanche logo has escaped criticism cuz they won like 3 cups in their first 6 years in that logo). No one even talks about the Patriots' hideous logo anymore.

3) I love the idea of going back to the classic logo with an updated spin, with the current blue/gold colors, and use the Slug as a secondary logo. I think there is something about the Slug that kind of works, but it's the abstract-looking tail that makes it look kind of silly.

Maybe you they have grown on you because other teams have out out jerseys that are just as ugly if not worse!

ding ding ding ding

All of these are worse, largely because they were the worst offenders when it came to adopting the goofy new Reebok design elements:

Florida

St. Louis

Nashville

Edmonton

Atlanta

Colorado

The new Sharks logo is also worse but the jerseys themselves are ok. Don't why they didn't use the set that Worcester uses, it's just an Edge template update of their last set.
