NEP's Week 16 Power Rankings

(1)1. Colts: Only unbeaten left and it's go for broke for them. They really have nothing to lose but a reeling New York Jet team is coming into the 10,000 Gallon Drum this week with their playoff dreams on the line.

(3)2. Chargers: Nate Kaeding might be the only kicker in the NFL right now that's hitting on all marks and his kick all but assured the Chargers a Division Title and a First Round Bye.

(2)3. Saints: I think the best thing for the Saints was to suffer a loss. Now all they have to concentrate on is locking up home field in the NFC and that shouldn't be much of a problem with the Bucs coming to town.

(7)4. Eagles: A win over the Broncos this week should give the Eagles the NFC East and right now they're possibly the scariest team in the NFC right now.

(4)5. Vikings: Losers of 2 of their last 3 haven't fared well in Sunday Night Games, no more of those on the docket thankfully and they still have a small shot at getting home field if the Saints drop the next two games and the Vikings win out.

(8)6. Cardinals: Clinched their second straight NFC West crown this week now they can think about resting some key players I.E. Kurt Warner and Larry Fitzgerald.

(9)7. Patriots: Randy Moss broke out in a big way against the Bills but I think what most Pats fans are wondering. Where is the offense.

(5)8. Packers: Harsh way to lose to the Steelers and now Mike Tomlin can rest easily that his stupid call on trying an onside kick with the lead didn't cost him the game. As for the Pack focus on beating the Seahawks and clinching a Wild Card Spot.

(NR)9. Cowboys: Congrats on being the first team on beating the Saints but if you think that was your playoff game think again. Two tough divisional opponents are waiting to ruin the Cowboys season once again.

(6)10. Bengals: What is happening to this team. Two weeks ago they were in the driver seat for a Division title and possibly a first round bye but now that the Ravens are on their tail. Thankful for the Bengals is that they hold the tiebreaker over the Ravens.

----------------------------------------------------------

11. Ravens

12. Giants

13. Broncos

14. Dolphins

15. Steelers

----------------------------------------------------------

(NR)28. Redskins: Finally after 15 Weeks the Skins have made it into the bottom 5. Now there job is to ruin their biggest rivals shot at the Playoffs.

(29)29. Chiefs: Let Josh Cribbs and Jerome Harrison murder them in Week 15.

(30)30. Lions: They almost beat the Cards this past Sunday but there all wasn't enough and good to see Drew Stanton getting some playing time as the season winds down.

(32)31. Buccaneers: Beat the Seahawks down this week and possibly lost their shot at Suh.

(32)32. Rams: They fought a reasonable opponent to the brink this past weekend but the one victory is that if they lose out Ndamakong Suh is there's for the taking.

Key Week 16 Games.

Chargers @ Titans (Christmas/Friday)

Jaguars @ Patriots

Texans @ Dolphins

Ravens @ Steelers

Broncos @ Eagles

Cowboys @ Redskins

They've played two teams that are a combined 22-6. One hasn't lost at home this season and the other hasn't lost in over two months. We can begin talking about a choke if they lose to Kansas City and the Jets in the last two games,

1 Indianapolis Colts

2 New Orleans Saints

3 San Diego Chargers

4 Philadelphia Eagles

5 New England Patriots

Bubbling under Bengals, Falcons, Vikings, Raiders, Cowboys

This can't be right. The Falcons are 7-7 and eliminated from the playoff race. They're the 7th best team in the NFC, not the NFL.

Let me deal with these one at a time.

The Falcons, I think they are better than there record this season, and in part I think thats sort of the point of power rankings, to iron problems with the seasons actual standings. That being said maybe they I have them a touch high. (Incidentally, both the bubbling under and staring over the precipice lists are in no particular order).

On the Pats, yeah that is controversial, but its getting to playoff time, and that is when the Patriots are always primed to peak for. I think they are improving right now.

And the Raiders on that 'bubbling under' list should be the Ravens. Just off to correct that now.

Going into the final week of regular season play here is how I see it

1 Indianapolis Colts

2 San Diego Chargers

3 New Orleans Saints

4 Philadelphia Eagles

5 New England Patriots

bubbling under Cardinals, Cowboys, Vikings, Bengals and Steelers

Bottom 5

32 St Louis Rams

31 Detroit Lions

30 Kansas City Chiefs

29 Tampa Bay Buccaneers

28 Buffalo Bills

Staring over the precipice Browns, Raiders, Redskins, Seahawks

Notes- San Diego overtake the Saints. The Chargers really have been quietly going about constructing a very good season. The Eagles and Patriots are probably the only othrer teams in the top 5 going forwards into the playoffs. (Is a week off after resting stars over the last 2 or 3 weeks of the season really great preparation for playoff football?)

At the bottom, clear blue water between the bottom 9 and the rest. The Browns have worked there way out of the bottom 5 after some reasonably impressive wins.

NEP's Week 17 and Final Regular Season Power Rankings.

(2)1. Chargers: Now that the Colts have fallen they find themselves atop the PR. Even if the Colts didn't fall I still thought the Chargers we're the most dangerous team in the AFC.

(1)2. Colts: Jim Caldwell's questionable call to pull the starters when the game was still close against the Jets, but now they only have one thing to focus on and it's a Super Bowl.

(4)3. Eagles: This upcoming week the Eagles will head to Dallas where they have a shot at the NFC East Title and if the Vikings fall earlier in the day a chance at a First Round Bye. This is the most dangerous team in the NFC.

(6)4. Cardinals: The Cardinals do have something to play for this week even if it's a long shot if the Eagles and Vikings both lose and the Cards beat the Pack then the Cardinals will be get a much deserved week off.

(3)5. Saints: They may have lost but they still gained Home Field albeit it was close but one of the worst things you can do is to head in to the playoffs on a slide and Carolina won't just rollover and die either.

(5)6. Vikings: In one of the best games of the year and possibly the decade the Bears and Vikings played a classic and Brett Favre didn't cost them either it was All Day who needs to stop his fumbling especially when a First Round Bye is on the line.

(7)7. Patriots: Clinched an AFC East title with a win over the Jags. Now the best they can do is finish 3rd in the AFC but the Texans will not die and still have something massive to play for.

(8)T8. Packers: Aaron Rodgers is heading to the Playoffs for the first time and is probably going to get some time off this week but they can still finish as the 6th seed in the NFC and a trip to Philly, Dallas, Glendale or Minneapolis is still a possibility.

(9)T8. Cowboys: Tony Romo is playing some great football and he has a chance to avenge what happened to his team last year against Philadelphia and go and win a Division Title.

(10)10. Bengals: Your AFC North champions! They can finish 3rd or 4th and have to play a Jets team with everything on the line.

---------------------------------------------

11. Jets

12. Steelers

13. Ravens

14. Texans

15. Broncos

---------------------------------------------

(28)28. Redskins: Skins are probably the worst team on this list but they have so much money that they can become one of the best in a blink of the eye and with an uncapped season on the horizon. Only if Dan Snyder was smart.

(29)29. Chiefs: Now they can spoil the hopes of the playoffs of one of their biggest foes in the Broncos.

(31)30. Buccaneers: The Bucs have knocked off two worthy opponents this season the Packers and the Saints. Their is still much to be done with this team and Josh Freeman can only get better as he ages.

(30)31. Lions: With a win this week they can triple the win total that they had last season and I think that's quite the improvement. Things can only get better?

(32)32. Rams: Fans don't want a victory they want Ndamakong Suh, A loss to the Niners and that will happen.

Key Week 17 Games.

Giants @ Vikings

Steelers @ Dolphins

Patriots @ Texans

Eagles @ Cowboys

Ravens @ Raiders

Chiefs @ Broncos

Bengals @ Jets

Must see pointless game of the week.

Falcons @ Buccaneers: A Falcon win and they get back to back winning seasons for the first time in their history.

Final power rankings of the 2009 season for Saintsfan

1 Indianapolis Colts (taking the 2 extra bye weeks Jim Caldwell gave this team out of the reckoning, if they don't win the Superbowl, Caldwell will take more stick than Dungy ever did.)

2 San Diego Chargers (quietly gone about there business all year, without causing much of a fuss, could be the biggest beneficiaries of the Colts extended holidays)

3 Dallas Cowboys (Seriously these could be a good quiet sleeper for the Superbowl in the end. )

4 Minnesota Vikings (Favre vs the Cowboys in the NFC Champioship game anyone?)

5 Green Bay Packers (No? How about Favre vs the Packers then?)

Just missing out Patriots, Bengals, Saints, Eagles, Cardinals)

Bottom 5

32 St Louis Rams (The nightmare is finally over)

31 Detroit Lions (2 game improvement over 2008, and still picking 2nd in the 2010 draft. This is where they might just regret picking Stafford, if the Rams go with Suh (as the Rams fans on the board want, then the Lions might have to pass on a better passer than Stafford)

30 Tampa Bay Buccaneers (Perrenially playoff challengers turned into basement Jacks in just 1 year)

29 Kansas City Chiefs (Is Todd Haley gonna be a classic 2 or 3 years and out Head Coach? If not improvements are needed quickly)

28 Washington Redskins (Coach out on his ear already, lots of wholes to fill in the roster. Money doesn't guarantee success)

Just avoiding the bottom 5 spots Bills, Browns, Raiders and Seahawks.
