I think each team should have someone watching the game on a tv where they'd be able to see the action in slow motion with several angles and then allow them to call a certain number of challenges a game.

Another thing I don't like is the inconsistency from game to game. Tugging of the shirt happens in every game and on corner kicks players always grab and hug eachother, either call the penalty everytime or keep it limited to extreme situations. So far the best reffing I've seen was Serbia vs. Germany. Yes, there were a lot of yellows handed out, but ultimatly it improved the game because players got the message and stopped fouling each other.

Instant replay "challenges" work in football because there is a stop after every play. In soccer, the clock doesn't stop if a player breaks his neck. Instant replay would completely ruin the flow that develops.

And about inconsistency... no two referees will officiate the same game. Some referees allow for more physical defense in basketball, a bigger strike zone in baseball, more clutching and grabbing in hockey, etc..

Here are what the Round of 16 matches would currently be

Uruguay-South Korea

Slovenia-Germany

Netherlands-Italy

Brazil-Spain

Argentina-Mexico

Ghana-USA

Paraguay-Japan

Chile-Portugal

Which IMO would lead to the following matchups for the rest of the tournament

Uruguay-Germany

Netherlands-Brazil

Argentina-USA

Paraguay-Portugal

Germany-Brazil

Argentina-Paraguay

Brazil-Argentina

Which means one team's fate may or may not be sealed by the time the other game ends.

Personallly, tomorrow will bring some big time drama to the games. Can France get their act together to beat Bafana Bafana? Will Uruguay and/or Mexico go out for a win and the chance to avoid Argentina in the Round of 16? Can Greece upend Maradonna's beastly squad? Can Nigeria do anything against a hungry South Korea team?

Maybe I'm confused but shouldn't it be Slovenia-Serbia based on head to head?

Head to head actually comes in after goal difference in this. Head to head only applies if the two teams scored and conceded the same number of goals.

Teams through to the round of 16 are:

Argentina

Netherlands

Brazil

Chile

Teams mathematically eliminated are:

Cameroon

North Korea

Honduras

That leaves 25 teams fighting over the 12 remaining spots. Of course certain of those teams, are realistically out of things (Australia, South Africa & France...)

Correct me if I'm wrong

I think that if Honduras beats Switzerland by 2 or more and Chile beats Spain, Honduras would move onto the Round of 16. So they're mathematically able to move on, even a little more likely than South Africa or France.

Argentina and Chile are not safe.

If South Korea and Greece both win, it's possible that Argentina can miss out on goal difference (Greece would have to win by 3 though).

If Switzerland and Spain both win, goal difference might doom Chile.

Easy method:

A team is mathematically clinched with 6 points after two games unless their final opponent has 3 points. (This is the potential 6-6-6-0 group.)

A team is mathematically eliminated with 0 points after two games unless their final opponent has 3 points. (This is the potential 9-3-3-3 group.)
