Ohio State is done... so who's next?

No, I'm not going to bother. It's pointless. I'm not going to stop being a homer. It's just who I am. Maybe I can tone it down a bit but what you're asking won't work. Maybe it'll get me banned some day, but that's a risk I'm going to have to take.

Then don't complain when people call you out on your behavior.

Does anyone else get this hunch that everyone is violating NCAA rules pretty severely?

Of course they are. It's just a question of who can cover it up the best.

Yes and I think it's why none of the other programs have publicly derided Ohio State. They're all doing it.

Are there rules violations? Yes. Are they this severe in most cases? No.

With that in mind, the NCAA needs to (and likely will) hammer OSU far worse than say...UNC. Mainly because OSU's compliance department spent the last decade doing this:

and pretending nothing was wrong when confronted with evidence of wrongdoing, while UNC's compliance department simultaneously crapped themselves when they found out about the local malfeasance, came clean about everything, and threw themselves upon the NCAA's tender if seemingly erratic mercies.

When your enforcement process is heavily reliant upon self reporting, you need to comparatively blast the guys who don't even bother to self report if you want the process to work at all.

I don't doubt that some or many players are violating rules, but not all and not this bad.

Are many universities in violation at this level? I don't buy that. There's too much at risk.

But there isn't that much at stake for players really. And from their point of view, why shouldn't they make a bit on the side for theIr sport? and if a school discovers the violations what do they do? Risk opening a can of worms? My guess is the NCAA would be quite happy to turn a blind eye except for the media pressure.

I think it's one of those situations where everyone can agree that the rules are dumb, but that it's impossible to find a sensible compromise. Actually the best compromise might be to turn a blind eye, but the media loves to take down big institutions, so it isn't going to let that happen.

There's a difference between "making a little on the side" and stealing multiple sets of equipment (that had been bought with school and by likely extension student dollars) to sell to memorabilia dealers for personal profit.

I believe it depends on the contract, but IIRC for marketable schools the supplier gives the team equipment for free as part of the contract to sell "authentic" gear.

And frankly, I don't believe that the system is broken. Players are already well-compensated for their contributions. If they are to receive some sort of stipend, then as a condition of that stipend their scholarships should be converted into standard student loans with the customary interest rate.

I dont know about severely, but yeah I'd agree everyone is violating rules. I read an interview with Bobby Bowden saying that anytime a player is at a bar and someone buys them a drink that's a violation. If a booster gives a player a ride to practice, that's a violation. If some friends go out for dinner and one person pays for the bill, that's a violation.

It's pretty easy to see how outdated some of these NCAA rules are.

These schools should sell/lease their athletic facilities and license their intellectual property to independent franchisees. Instead of having Phil Knight and T. Boone Pickens be these creepy puppetmasters of 19-year-old boys, just have them own minor-league teams outright which happen to call themselves the Oregon Ducks or whatev.

There's a lot of money to be lost in doing that.

I thought all these athletic programs were in the red as it is and as such couldn't afford to give players modest stipends. I dunno. The status quo is retarded. Can't get much worse.

I can't see any other system that would be less retarded, other than to just tear up the NCAA and leave pro sports teams to run there own scouting and player development, via farm systems.

Of course they are. It's just a question of who can cover it up the best.

Why did you even as the original topic as the NCAA still has active football inquires out on Auburn and LSU?

You talked to us about your NCAA football love, yet you had no clue on the UNC investigation.

First of all, that sentence made no sense what so ever.

I knew about it. I knew about the 13 players suspended. There was no secret as to why UNC underachieved last season. It's just really old news. That's like saying "Hey guys did you here? We got Osama!". The investigation doesn't end until August, so that's probably when the most info will come out.

He forgot the 'k.' It should have been "ask the."

So what do you want? The next team to be hit with sanctions or the next team to have an investigation? It is your thread.
