Nicest and Rudest NHL Players that You've Met?

During the 2004-05 NHL Lockout, Zach Parise was playing for the Albany River Rats. I got to meet him after a Springfield Falcons game and had a fifteen minute conversation with him. Nicest guy and never seemed to want to rush out on the conversation (which some athletes seem to do). Actually asked me what I thought about the lockout and said he felt lucky "to get a fans perspective for once." Also voluntarily took my team sheet (a team sheet with all the players pictures so I knew who was who; used to be a big time autograph hound), brought it on the bus and came out with his signed. I hope he's still this personable, know that he's a much bigger star.

I can't say I've really met any rude players... Gordie Howe, Darcy Rota, Orland Kurtenbach, Sami Salo, Matt Cooke, & Manny Malhotra are the NHL players that I've met. I don't really remember what Matt Cooke was like, but I don't think he was rude.

Yeah, Parise is still really nice, he signs all the stuff you send to him, which most star players don't. Other nice ones are Thomas Vanek (who signed an autograph for me right after they stitched up his jaw) and Ryan Miller (by far the nicest Sabre)

Woah! You think I'm Cody? My name is Carl Scott Simone and we just happen to share a birthday. BIG DEAL.

I met a few players a few years ago when I was working in radio and miraculously got a few media passes.

Brett Hull: Pretty nice guy. Signed for nearly everybody outside, and inside of the media and players section was really personable and gave some really good interviews. The dude is funny as hell too.

Mario Lemieux: I had heard he was a really nice guy from a few co-workers but I found him to be surprisingly rude. He got a bit impatient with us on a few occasions during interviews.

Wayne Gretzky: Seemed pretty quiet. I didn't get to see him much because he was crushed with people at every spot I saw him at, but his PR guy gave a bunch of us autographed programs. I have no idea where it disappeared to though :(

Mike Eruzione: He came off as an enormous dick, but in the long run wasn't too bad and turned out to be pretty cooperative. Wasn't ever particularly nice though and had an ego like I've never seen before. He certainly milks the Miracle for all it's possibly worth.

On a non hockey related note, the absolute nicest and most personable celebrity I have ever met anywhere was at this tournament as well. That was Guy Fieri, host of Diners, Drive-Ins, and Dives. Despite how douchey he looks he is a dude I would drink a beer with any time. He lives in Northern California and loves Lake Tahoe. He actually came over and gave us the majority of his time because we were the only local news outlet there. Hooked us up with some of the best food I've ever eaten, and got us pretty inebriated on some awesome tequila (Totally unprofessional, I know. But we were a small ass AM station with absolutely no business being there in the first place so we figured what the hell), and was actually a ton of fun to talk with.

I didn't it was like the 2nd one down. Much like now.

But when you replied you moved it up to the first, which though not a substantial difference, is still bumping it up.

And you'll always have your neat picture.
We'll make the playoffs and compete for the Stanley Cup.
So what if I'm post-padding? The world won't end.

I've met

Matt Cooke seemed nice but was a bit unpatient

Bryan Allen at a save on foods during an autograph signing. Seemed really nice and patient.

Brad May at a save on foods as well. He was nice even made some small talk with him (about my Buffalo Sabres rookie card of him)

Ryan Kesler at A BC Place grand opening. Nice guy. Wished him the best on his injury and got a picture with him

I've met Alex Korolyuk, Ron Sutter and Stephane Matteau. All seemed cool, though I don't remember exactly since it was over 10 years ago. Also during a warm up of a Jackets-Sharks in October 2001, Kevin Dineen tossed me a puck which was very cool.

Ric Nattress is the coach of the Jr. B team that I work for. I've only briefly talked to him, but he was very nice.

Story B: Red Wings go undefeated and score 100 goals in every game. They also beat a team comprised of Godzilla, the ghost of Abraham Lincoln, 2 Power Rangers and Betty White. Oh, and they played in the middle of Iraq on a military base. In the sand. With no ice. Santa gave them special sand-skates that allowed them to play in shorts and t-shirts in 115 degree weather. Jesus, Zeus and Buddha watched from the sidelines and ate cotton candy.

Mario Lemieux is a nice guy, Mat Cooke is also surprisingly not goony at all, nice. Tyler Kennedy, very nice and polite. Miro Satan, very stuck-up and snobbish, denied a little kid an autograph, NOT COOL.

Doesn't surprise me one iota.

Sorry, I had to.
