2012 NFL Season Thread

What are they possibly going to get in return for Sanchez?

The Jets would gladly take a 6th or 7th rounder for Sanchez, considering it would save them a billion dollars against the salary cap next season.

Yeah, it is about unloading money.

It is not that simple. If gets traded (or cut), the cap hit for the Jets accelerates. They would be charged essentially double his 2013 salary.

Really? I didn't know that. I thought in a trade the other team picks up the contract. No wonder no one trades in the NFL anymore. I knew they ate the contract via cut. The trade is a surprise.

Bonus money is the responsibility of the original team, unless agreed to in the language of the trade.

The bonus money given to Sanchez from both his rookie contract ($2.5M) and this season's extension ($6.4M) would fall on the Jets for the 2013 league year.

It's really funny how everyone feels sorry for Alex Smith when just a few years everyone though he was a piece of :censored:.

Well I think everyone knew the second Kaepernick got in a game Alex Smith's days in San Francisco were numbered and that's exactly what happened.

I don't think Alex Smith did anything to deserve to lose the job, but Kaepernick is clearly Harbaugh's guy.

That being said I definitely think Alex Smith is going to generate interest around the league for a starting job, and whether it be Buffalo, Kansas City, Jacksonville, Philadelphia, Arizona, the Jets, somebody is going to give him a starting job. Just too many teams looking for quarterbacks not to have somebody offer him a starting job.

If Free keeps mucking it up the way he's been doing of late...I'm sure we'd be happy to have Smith trade out his gold for some pewter.

(Especially if it'll finally put some pressure on ol' boy to straighten up or get ghost.)

I think a lot of people frustrated that Smith hadn't improved had to acknowledge that he was being asked to learn a new system every year.

We all knew the Niners weren't doing him any favors.

Somebody...just doesn't like Alex Smith all that much, do they?

Although I would pass on that idea as well. Not only because Freeman doesn't need any distractions like that, but also because Smith's accuracy numbers are a byproduct of the passing game San Francisco operates. Which is not a knock on Smith, because he operated within that system well and won a lot of games in the past couple of seasons - but the Bucs don't run nearly the same kind of offense.

No, I don't. I've watched him enough over the course of his career to know that not only is he not the solution that Tampa needs, he's also not particularly good. He's serviceable to a team which has a great defense and a good amount of offensive weapons, and Tampa really has none of those things. Sure Doug Martin is great, and the receiving core is decent due to the addition of V Jax, but they're still short on that end of the ball. And I don't think anyone can say that the defense is anything short of terrible. Smith is a guy who can do well enough when handed the lead or a close game, but he'd get killed in Tampa trying to constantly bring that team back from down after their miserable secondary gives up a long touchdown. And why all this talk of replacing Freeman so soon? He's been terribly inconsistent, but he's not that bad. He's shown flashes of brilliance that Alex Smith can only dream of. Get him some more weapons to work with and he can still develop further. Bringing in another quarterback to compete with him would be a disaster IMO, and dumping him this early would be incredibly stupid.

Just as long as they don't bring in Tebow, though. I don't think I could stick around as a fan with that circus in play.

Per Schefter:

And @mortreport reports it's "a virtual certainty" that Tim Tebow will play in 2013 for the Jacksonville Jaguars.

While the Jags seem like the only NFL option for Tebs, I'm not exactly sure what Mortensen is basing his story on.

I hope he is just thinking he is on to something due to personal logic. Me no want Tebow!

Cheer up. At the very least Tebow will put butts in seats.

That hasn't been a problem lately. Not like our Florida brothers.

Sure thing.

Being able to take the tarps off for the entire season couldn't hurt the Jags though. Honestly I think Tebow to the Jags makes the most sense. It's a perfect match.

Tebow's local. Like him or not, fans in the region do like him. His run at the University of Florida can only add to his popularity in town.

Tebow's obviously not content to sit on the sidelines. He's not getting playing time in New York, and he wants out.

The Jags need a quarterback. Is Tebow a great, or even good, NFL quarterback? Probably not, BUT he'll garner more interest at the position then either Chad Henne or Blaine Gabbert.

As for the circus that comes with Tebow? Look, like it or not people primarily talk about the Jags these days as relocation candidates, either to London or LA. At the very least having Tebow on board will get people talking about the Jags without mentioning relocation.

No. There will be no "Tebow circus" this time. Compared to where it was 12, or even 6 months ago, Tebomania is dead. Just like how Yokozuna finished off Hulkamania, Rex warmed up his giant fat ass and squashed it.
