They also beat a team comprised of Godzilla, the ghost of Abraham Lincoln, 2 Power Rangers and Betty White. Oh, and they played in the middle of Iraq on a military base. In the sand. With no ice. Santa gave them special sand-skates that allowed them to play in shorts and t-shirts in 115 degree weather. Jesus, Zeus and Buddha watched from the sidelines and ate cotton candy. dfwabel
No football announcer let the game come to him any more than Pat Summerall. So low key, he often said very, very little like, "Rypien...Monk...Touchdown." The only emotion he would come with was when on CBS he read the teaser for "60 Minutes and Murder...She Wrote".He got past his demons with alcohol when confronted by his friends and family in 1992 to enter Betty Ford as he told in nearly every public appearance he did after sobriety and his subsequent liver transplant. Not only was he "my voice" for the NFL (no slight to Dick Enberg) but also 1 NBA season, 30 Masters golf tournaments, 26 U.S. Open tennis championships, and 2 French Opens. His story is also a reminder to take every interview seriously as his invitation to interview for CBS was essentially an afterthought as he was the roommate of Giants QB, Charlie Conerly and CBS was to only interview Conerly. Pat answered the phone and was invited by CBS to come in too.
pianoknight
Trivia about Summerall; his given name is George, not Patrick. As a placekicker, he earned the nickname "Pat" because the box score would read "PAT - Summerall" after each touchdown. 5th in NAT.Ā TITLESĀ |Ā 2nd in CONF. MellowTheMyth
I'll always remember growing up and listening to the duo of Summerall & Madden commentate games every Sunday and always remembering how they complemented each other so well. Then they commentated on the Madden video games too. Definitely the voice for many things and he will truly be missed. Ā Ā

dbadefense1990
The best Summerall quote I ever heard:"Next week, we play the Super Bowl. After that, the Pro Bowl. Today, we'll play both."
