While not surprised about the Lecavalier buyout on some levels it still feels like a punch to the gut. I'm not the type to get overly sentimental about that type of thing but it's almost impossible to picture him in another team's jersey. Rumors swirling around here are that he will sign a one year deal somewhere and then come back to Tampa, which he calls his home and where wife and kids will likely stay. But those rumors always exist in theis type of situation. I hope he plays a year in Montreal and then comes back. To be honest I'd only be half surprised if he decided to retire. It's certainly weird to think back about 18 year old Vinny playing his first season with the team, wearing #8 and in the old stormfront jersey!

Ignore the year, but could it happen?

Story B: Red Wings go undefeated and score 100 goals in every game. They also beat a team comprised of Godzilla, the ghost of Abraham Lincoln, 2 Power Rangers and Betty White. Oh, and they played in the middle of Iraq on a military base. In the sand. With no ice. Santa gave them special sand-skates that allowed them to play in shorts and t-shirts in 115 degree weather. Jesus, Zeus and Buddha watched from the sidelines and ate cotton candy.

I think people would know not to predict a great Blue Jackets team. Every time that happens they bottom out.

I'm placing them 11-12th in my predictions for next year and then I'll get ready for them to win the president's trophy.

The Blue Jackets have a huge draft coming up on Sunday. I think they're liable to take a step back after their overachievement last year, but that's fine in the grand scheme of things because it gives the new management a little more time to get the pipeline where it ought to be. They're stepping into a highly competitive division, which won't help, but at least there won't be as many road games at 8 p.m.!

The Jets both do and don't have a huge draft coming up, too. They're supposed to be a big build-through-the-draft team, but it hasn't really happened for them yet, and at this point I just expect them to blow it anyway. And go figure, the year they get two picks from the Blackhawks, they're the last picks in each round. Winnipeg has the worst luck.

Mark Messier leaves Rangers organization, says it has nothing to do with not being chosen as head coach.

Oh, and the Hawks just complianced Steve Montador and Rostislav Olesz, to the surprise of absolutely no one anywhere. Montador could catch on somewhere on a you're-already-getting-paid deal; Olesz will never play in the NHL again.

Apparently the Leafs and Lightning had a trade in place that was nixed by the league. Toronto would've got Lecavalier and a pick (probably the 3rd overall) for essentially nothing (like a 7th) and promptly bought him out, allowing him to re-sign with Tampa Bay. So the Lightning would've given up the 3rd overall to save money, cap space, and to keep Vinny, while the Leafs would've paid $30M for Jonathon Drouin.

Interesting if true.

Re-signing Kunitz - Good.

I'd like to see Shero go after someone like a Danny Briere who has the skill and speed to keep up with Sid and help him out. If they re-sign Duper as well then you can put Kunitz back on the Geno/Neal line. Would be pretty happy to see Scuderi in a Pens sweater again. He's the kind of defensive specialist we've been hurting for.
