2013 NHL Off-Season Thread

Reportedly, he's looking at 5 years, $50M in the KHL compared to the 12 years, $77M left in Jersey.

This Russian thing is really becoming an issue for the NHL.

---

Also, Devils still have to give up their 1st rounder next year as punishment for the cap circumvention with that contract.

He's only 30.

Well, enjoy the KHL. As long as a heavy majority of the world's best player would rather play in North America than in Russia, I'm not really worried about that league. Contract negotiations with russians will suck because they have leverage other players don't, but that's been true for longer than Kovalchuk's been in the NHL. This doesn't help dispel the stereotype that Russians are flighty.

In the long run this may be the best thing for the Devils.

HOLY :censored:

I'm going to be on the Yahoo Sports/Sportsnet hockey podcast today talking with Greg Wyshnski of Puck Daddy! Their normal co-host Jeff Marek of Sportsnet is out today, so there's a slew of people going on the show, and he chose me as one of them!

Tune in at 2:50 p.m ET/11:50 a.m. PT at this site: http://www.sportsnet.ca/590/marek-vs-wyshynski/ : to hear me talk about probably hockey, hopefully some Ducks hockey with the Puck Daddy himself. I'm pretty excited.

That's awesome! I listen to MvsW everyday!

Lose Parise, Clarkson, Kovalchuk, and Brodeur over the course of 3 offseasons. Yeah, they're heading into rough times in Jersey.

How would it feel to be Cory Schneider right now? Yikes.

---

And you know what? Blanket statement. I almost wouldn't mind all Russians just going back over to the KHL and getting this over with.

Ouch, I feel so bad for Devils fans. After how hard the Devils got punished for Kovalchuk's contract, him retiring now is just more salt in the wound.

With the first overall selection in the 2015 NHL draft, the New Jersaaay Devils are proud to select from Erie of the OHL, Connor McDavid.

Didn't they get their pick for this coming year taken away?

I keep seeing this from people on twitter. I couldn't feel less bad for Devils fans.

The contract was going to get terrible and hinder their team at some point so now they get out of it and they'll get to start their inevitable rebuild now and they'll probably get to draft McDavid first overall in two years.

On top of that, Devils fans are among the most spoiled fanbases in sports. Three Stanley Cups, a million playoff appearances, they were in the Finals as recently two years ago, and they've gotten to enjoy MARTIN BRODEUR (!). Aside from that weird year where they were terrible and still almost made the playoffs and last season they've had about two decades of sustained excellence. Devils fans can handle some losing.

but maybe that's just my view as a fan of a team that's never won a playoff game. I wish this would've happened to the Red Wings of the mid to late 90's when they were rolling with two lines and a defensive pairing of the Russian red army.

Schneider is a major upgrade in goal for them since Brodeur and Hedberg were pretty bad last year. I could see them being more mediocre and thus not getting the top pick(s).

Yeah, not sure where we're getting the Devils falling into the land of Connor McDavid. They have Schneider, Larsson, a decent pipeline, and a commitment to defense. It's a meat grinder of a division they're in, but they'll hang in there semi-demi-acceptably. Look at how untalented Nashville and Phoenix were and still made the playoffs regularly. Devils can swing that, and they probably have more talent.

So, apparently, Kovalchuk could earn $20 million in the KHL... PER. SEASON.

Consider it hazard pay.

So we've lost both Kovy and DiPietro's stupid contracts in one offseason.

In loving memory:

So, Ilya Kovalchuk retired out of the clear damn nowhere.

12 years left on his deal.

Holy crap. The Devils are in deep. I mean.... WHAT?

Wait wait wait. Tell me I'm reading this wrong. If you retire TWELVE years before your contract is up, you still get paid for those 12 years? That can't be right.

And frankly, I'm honestly not surprised Ilya Kovalchuk would pull something like this. He's always seemed like the kind of dude who simply doesn't want to give enough of a crap about playing hockey to match his enormous talent level.

This is how I'll remember Ol' Kovy

So the KHL is undergoing rapid, far-flung expansion, overpaying for stars, and running without a salary cap? Well, this ought to get fun in the next few years.

Dude, look at the roster. They have an equal forwards corps to that of Nashville/Phoenix (not overly talented or deep), and their defense is NO WHERE close to either Nashville or Phoenix. Nashville has the best defenseman in the game, and Phoenix has one hell of a player in OEL. New Jersey also has a lot of impact players who are getting pretty old (Elias, Salvador, Zidlicky, etc.), and while they have a decent pipeline, will those guys like Merrill and Boucher be ready to help out that 2015 team? ... And what has Larsson done so far?

They weren't even a good team this year WITH Kovalchuk.

But on top of all that, horrible to not good enough attendance throughout their history.
