Rite of Spring '14: Can you fall asleep with a panic switch?

The Vancouver rivalry was so much fun. It's over now, of course. We won. My only regret was that Chicago fans at large never picked up on the hatred as much as Vancouver fans did, probably because the idea of a rivalry with a city located outside the upper midwest was inconceivable. I don't think many of my brethren could find the damn place on a map. If you don't send us truckloads of Big Ten alumni and have a different local take on pizza or sandwiches, who are you to us?

Quenneville's Blackhawks are also right around .500 in Games 1-3 and then killer in 4-7. We're so spoiled now, with every loss being devastating.

This calls for a confirmation of that suspicion. Lets take a look:

2009:

CAL: 2-1, 2-1

VAN: 1-2, 3-0

DET: 1-2, 0-2

2010:

NSH: 1-2, 3-0

VAN: 2-1, 2-1

SJ: 3-0, 1-0

PHI: 2-1, 2-1

2011:

VAN: 0-3, 3-1

2012:

PHX: 1-2, 1-2

2013:

MIN: 2-1, 2-0

DET: 1-2, 3-1

LA: 2-1, 2-0

BOS: 1-2, 3-0

2014:

STL: 1-2, 3-0

MIN: 2-1*,

Overall, they are 22-23 in Games 1-3, and 30-9 in Games 4-7 of playoff series' since 2009. They are 13-1 since last postseason and in their two Cup runs they've gone 18-3 in those later games.

In other words, you nailed it.

EDIT - welp, yeah. Fixed.

Seeing stuff like this makes me pissed at the Ducks marketing department. The Kings are denying involvement, but come on. This is them. Now the Ducks marketing people? Never in a million years. I don't know if they don't do stuff like this or encourage it in the arena because they don't want to "stoop to their level" or something, but in a rivalry, why shouldn't we?

At Staples Center, they get the organ going to encourage fans to chant "Ducks Suck" or "Sharks Suck" and get the organ going after a goal is scored to get fans to chant the goalie's name. They do the videos and the Cartman stuff. And with the Ducks at Honda Center? Nothing. The shirts they gave out should say "Beat LA" The towels should say "Beat LA'. There should be videos of Game of Thrones or name any medieval movie where they usurp the king. But nothing.

It sucks. This sucks. Kings suck.

To be fair, any videos on the Honda Center video boards wouldn't have as much impact since they still have the 1993 unit hanging.

Note to Samueli: join the 21st century, please.

That said, they really need to do something down there, because it came off on TV like the home crowd was left to their own devices to start chants while King fans have them pretty much engrained due to the organ, etc at Staples. You have a damn good goal song that the crowd gets behind, but people need their hands held.

I do disagree though about the Beat LA thing. It's a lazy chant that the Bay Area sings to their children at night and, in all honesty, I expect better from OC ^_^

The most surprising finding about this factoid is the team who's been the most successful against Chicago in Games 4-7. Look at that laundry list of heavyweights Chicago had relative ease to in the later games of a series (LA, Boston, Detroit, Vancouver), then look who's actually given them the most hell later on in the series.

How can they be denying it? Any SoCal hockey fan with even a 20/10 vision can tell the billboards contain the same font as the ones used by the Kings' marketing department.

Yes on both accounts.

I mean there's some fans that bring cowbells, and they get a Wild Wing to do the cowbell once a game, but it's not really there. And a lot of the fans try the "Lets Go Du-ucks" which sounds lazy and slow, not forceful and energetic (and allows itself to be puctuated by a "Go Kings Go" on each side of it).

But ya know, this probably does stem all the way back from the Disney days. It was always handled as family-friendly entertainment, and as such, maybe the majority of fans (and game ops) were trained as such. Everything was just fun and nice and opposing fans were almost welcomed. Rather than being a raucous, hockey/event environment. There's nothing wrong with family entertainment, but I'd like the hockey part to be taken more seriously (or at least more of that hockey edge) by the marketing and game ops people.

The cowbell is something to go off of. Bailey has both a handheld drum and a huge bass drum, so giving Wild Wing a signature noisemaker would be a start.

And although they'd be a bit confusing for some, a "Regicide" chant or "Orange Wedding" promos would definitely be a start.

Didn't that chant originate in Philadelphia?

"Beat LA" started in boston as the 76ers were about to beat the celtics to go against the lakers in the finals, so they we're telling philly to beat la

I think the Ducks have profited competitively, and maybe fiscally, from living in kind of a bubble. They have never and will never have to deal with the pitchforks that franchises in Canada and the Northeast do, and I think that's allowed them to operate their team in a very conscientious way. Standing idly by while the Kings give you crap in your own backyard is probably the dark side of that bubble.
