That time when Ryan Kesler scared us all by wearing the wrong helmet to a photoshoot

Story B: Red Wings go undefeated and score 100 goals in every game. They also beat a team comprised of Godzilla, the ghost of Abraham Lincoln, 2 Power Rangers and Betty White. Oh, and they played in the middle of Iraq on a military base. In the sand. With no ice. Santa gave them special sand-skates that allowed them to play in shorts and t-shirts in 115 degree weather. Jesus, Zeus and Buddha watched from the sidelines and ate cotton candy.

Not sure if this belongs here, but this may be the closest a thread topic ever gets to including this image. They had cages in 1985, I have no idea how or why Gallant wore this.

He broke his jaw in a fight with Dirk Graham.

I get that he was protecting his jaw. But why not wear a traditional hockey cage to do that? Why a football facemask?

This wasnt short lived, they wore that red helmet for 9 seasons, and only got rid of it when they changed their colors to red/black

Probably likes the additional visibility

At that point, why wouldn't you just wear a regular hockey cage

That's what I thought about Crosby's monster mash of regular visor and clear cage with the visor part removed.

Don't know if this counts as short-lived, since someone on the team wears one, but in Liiga, the leading scorer on a team wears a gold helmet until a teammate overtakes him in scoring, then the helmet gets passed on. In the photo above, the player on the left is wearing the normal helmet, the player on the right (Jani Rita) is wearing the gold helmet for the game. Somewhere, the leading scorer on the other team is wearing his gold helmet, while his teammates are wearing the black.

That's pretty cool. Can the switch happen in-game or only after?

The gold helmet wearer is determined before each game. I'm not sure what they do in case of ties.
Hmm, yeah, that seems like a bit of an unnecessary target to put on the head of your top scorer. I mean, do you really want to make it even easier for guys like Matt Cooke to find who they should cross check from behind on the fly?

That looks more like something the Detroit Lions would wear.

It would become hard to see through from all of his tears.

Regular hockey cages and the ones Crosby and Getzlaf used have chin cups. Maybe Gallant didn't like the pressure on his jaw.

There's this, and the thinking also might have been if he gets hit with a traditional cage, then it might cause more of an injury.

That makes sense too.
