Possible NHL Expansion: Logo and Name Ideas

Oh, I think Denver Avalanche sounds much better. But yes, the Florida Panthers are named after an animal. That being said, it's important to remember that inaugural owner Wayne Huizenga is one of those Broward County weirdos who has to disavow any relation to Miami because it's scary and druggy and ethnic, so it's not coincidental that Miami's NHL team was given a name that didn't have Miami in it. Same deal with the Marlins, which he also first owned. Then he ended up moving the Panthers to Broward County anyway, of course.

Both the nomenclature and the move ended up being bad moves, I feel, now that Miami is one of the most glamorous cities in the world. The Panthers aren't part of that. They play at an outlet mall in the seemingly endless suburbia of South Florida that indeed ends only when it abuts a giant swamp. They're the team of cookie-cutter gated communities, imaginary downtowns created by mall developers, beautiful weather spoiled by ceaseless whining that this still isn't New York, and ten-lane highways where no one uses turn signals. That's what South Florida But Not Miami is. I'd rather associate with the cocaine!

♫ oh yeah, board goes on, long after the thrill of postin' is gone ♫

Aren't the Florida Panthers kinda the same like the Texas Rangers where they are named after the animal? Maybe it's just because we are use to it, but sometimes naming a team after the state/province just sounds better than the city, like how Colorado Avalanche sounds better than Denver Avalanche to me.

The problem with province names is that once you get out of the Maritimes Canadian provinces become large blocks of land that exist mostly for administrative purposes. "Ontario" is a really big place. You've got Toronto, Southern Ontario That's Not Toronto, Detroit+ (London and everything south of it), Niagara, Kingston, Ottawa, the upper Great Lakes, and the collection of mining towns that is northern Ontario, separated by seemingly endless wilderness. Saying you represent "Ontario" is kind of vague because there is no single "Ontario" culture. It didn't develop that way. The province is just the old British colony of Upper Canada with a slab of untamed wilderness slapped onto it. The different parts of Ontario have their unique character, but there's no real overarching culture. Which is why I think a second team in southern Ontario should just use the city name. If they play in Toronto, be the second Toronto team. If they play in Hamilton, be the Hamilton team.

The BC Lions are weird like that too. British Columbia was one of the most slapdash affairs in Canadian history because everyone thought we had to have a presence out there to keep the Americans out. "British Columbia" as a term doesn't really reflect anyone culturally. You have Vancouver which is a progressive coastal city. Inland BC though? It's mostly libertarians who refer to the people in Vancouver and Victoria as "those left wing hippies." So the idea that the Lions are "BC's football team" is kind of funny. "BC" as a place has no single definable culture.

Isn't Non-Lower-Mainland BC just basically Alberta?

I've moved the discussion concerning the 2nd southern Ontario team to the thread in Sports in General...

http://boards.sportslogos.net/topic/100383-report-nhl-expanding-league-adding-4-teams-by-2017/page-13

This thread was created to talk about potential names/logos. The discussion was getting a bit too focused on the viability of a second southern Ontario team, so I simply shifted that discussion over.

But, the Denver Avalanche existed before:

DenverAvalanche8082.GIF

So did the previously mentioned Las Vegas Coyotes, whose logo is was what Wile. E. Coyote looked like when he was strung out on meth (he said as someone who worked for the franchise when it was based in Oklahoma City)...

There are several sports teams that have the State \Province \ Region in there name such as .

MLB.

New York Yankees - New York City

New York Mets - State

NFL.

New York Giants - New York City

New York Jets - State \ New Jersey

No. Those teams are all named for New York City, which is also officially known as "New York".

...as the mascot, if memory serves.

Did someone seriously make that statement?

Hamilton Mustangs for the win. Also, if basketball isn't going back into Seattle any time soon, any chance getting the rights to Sonics might work for a team? Just like Colorado Rockies, which was likely an obvious choice for both baseball and hockey, there'd already be some familiarity with the name.

No way. Even if the NBA doesn't put a team back in Seattle, there's still money to be made off the name and merchandise.
