That being said, it's important to remember that inaugural owner Wayne Huizenga is one of those Broward County weirdos who has to disavow any relation to Miami because it's scary and druggy and ethnic, so it's not coincidental that Miami's NHL team was given a name that didn't have Miami in it. Same deal with the Marlins, which he also first owned. Then he ended up moving the Panthers to Broward County anyway, of course. Both the nomenclature and the move ended up being bad moves, I feel, now that Miami is one of the most glamorous cities in the world. The Panthers aren't part of that. They play at an outlet mall in the seemingly endless suburbia of South Florida that indeed ends only when it abuts a giant swamp. They're the team of cookie-cutter gated communities, imaginary downtowns created by mall developers, beautiful weather spoiled by ceaseless whining that this still isn't New York, and ten-lane highways where no one uses turn signals. That's what South Florida But Not Miami is. Maybe it's just because we are use to it, but sometimes naming a team after the state/province just sounds better than the city, like how Colorado Avalanche sounds better than Denver Avalanche to me.The problem with province names is that once you get out of the Maritimes Canadian provinces become large blocks of land that exist mostly for administrative purposes. "Ontario" is a really big place. You've got Toronto, Southern Ontario That's Not Toronto, Detroit+ (London and everything south of it), Niagara, Kingston, Ottawa, the upper Great Lakes, and the collection of mining towns that is northern Ontario, separated by seemingly endless wilderness. Saying you represent "Ontario" is kind of vague because there is no single "Ontario" culture. It didn't develop that way. The province is just the old British colony of Upper Canada with a slab of untamed wilderness slapped onto it. The different parts of Ontario have their unique character, but there's no real overarching culture. Which is why I think a second team in southern Ontario should just use the city name. If they play in Toronto, be the second Toronto team. If they play in Hamilton, be the Hamilton team.The BC Lions are weird like that too.
