No, they're not coasters.. You can kind of see that it's the type of thigh pad made of several small hexagons/ovals/circles (depending on the brand)... Here's a better picture of him with similar thigh pads..

When Michael Reeves played for Fizroy in the VFL in the late 1980's, he wore full-length American football style pants, rather than shorts. Apparently his thighs were easy to bruise, so the long pant allowed him to wear padding underneath to protect them.
