You can kind of see that it's the type of thigh pad made of several small hexagons/ovals/circles (depending on the brand)... Here's a better picture of him with similar thigh pads.. M4One
Wayne Gretzky's Jofa helmet and his blue blades. When he got shipped off to LA, he switched them to black. Glenn Anderson is the only other guy I can think of who had different coloured blades.
j'villejags
What is up with the gold piece under Chris Thompson's earhole? I may be out of the loop but I'd never seen that on a helmet. walkerws
It looks like maybe a piece of additional piece of plastic to strengthen the shell but it should be the same color .

WavePunter
It's a cheek stabilizer piece.. The idea is that your jaw moves, so traditional jaw pads and chin straps aren't as effective as they should be.. Your cheek bones never move, so it helps the fit and stability of the helmet

Graham_Clayton
When Michael Reeves played for Fizroy in the VFL in the late 1980's, he wore full-length American football style pants, rather than shorts. Apparently his thighs were easy to bruise, so the long pant allowed him to wear padding underneath to protect them.
