2015 MLB Season Thread with Postseason Discussion

The cycle is more of a fluke than the no-hitter. The cycle is just a 4 hit game. Thousands of players have had 4 hits in a game. Not that many have had no-hitters

Now, there's different classes of no-hitters. Homer Bailey walked one guy on a bad call in his second no-hitter and that was all that kept him from perfection. Could've easily been a perfect game.

Then there's guys like Edwin Jackson who walked 8 guys and threw 149 pitches. He wasn't exactly breezing. Then there's the combined no-hitters like the Mariners and Astros threw which are cool, but sort of also a snapshot of how specialized pitchers are these days. Then there's the no-hitters in which the pitcher's team actually manages to lose.

and then there's Dock Ellis' LSD trip.

The cycle is more rare than a no-hitter, but you are exactly right. It's a statistical anomaly. Two HR and two doubles, for example, is a better performance than the cycle but gets less pub.

Similarly, I feel like no-hitters, while a good performance are almost over-rated. It dates back to the 1800s when we just kinda started not recognizing walks. I'd certainly argue that giving up 1 hit and 1 walk is better than zero hits and 6 walks (but even then....what if that hit is a HR?). So like the cycle, it's an indicator of a great performance but some less-recognized performances could be better

A perfect game, on the other hand, is a huge deal. That's undeniable. The closest argument against would be if there are a ton of great defensive plays. I am sure there are a couple of nobody pitchers who have perfect games to their credit. And that's great..."I was unhittable for one day." It's part of what makes baseball fun.

Yeah I can definitely see how another Giants no hitter seems kinda ho hum at this point to a lot of people. But you have to look at it like this, before Jonathan Sanchez threw that no no in 2009 vs the Padres, the last no hitter they had was from John Montefusco vs the Braves in 1976. Since 2009, they've had FIVE no hitters. That's crazy.

I for one, have enjoyed the absolute :censored: out of just about every single moment from this team since the start of that 09 season.

Someone said it earlier and it's completely true. This is ABSOLUTEY the golden age of Giants baseball.

I don't blame you. And I have enjoyed the couple of Twins no-nos in my memory. Some no-hitters are not as great as some others, but it's always fun.

And my dream is to go to a no-hitter.

(though the closest I got was against the Twins; into the 7th and I hated that. I want to see the Twins throw one or else see one at a neutral site)

I was ONE DAY short of seeing both the Sanchez no no vs the Padres and the Cain perfect game vs the Astros. Had tickets to the game before both times. Closest I've ever seen was when Zito went 7 1/3 innings vs the Rangers on Fathers Day back in (I think) 2008.

I was at Dave Stewart's no-no in 1990, same night as Fernando Valenzuela's.

Younger, I didn't realize what was happening when SkyDome got to its feet for him in the 9th.

I think I've been to a couple other no-no's into the 6th, yet those games came apart, & the starts never factored much to the outcomes.

I missed Randy Johnson's first no-hitter in 1990 with the Mariners because it was raining out. My buddy and I had gone to a different part of Seattle looking for something he needed and at lunch we decided we might as well go check out the Mariners game later that day. But it started raining and we decided we didn't want to wait for our bus in the rain that night, so we went on back home and listened to it on the radio...

He was probably thinking of the great Bud Smith.

Also, who the hell is Mike Wagner?

Another name I screwed up I meant Mike Warren threw a no hitter for the A's in 1983.

BoBo Holoman lifetime three wins, one was a No Hitter.

$&@# you Red Sox, but with the way this team has played this year any fan could of seen them blow this 8-1 lead now 11-8 jays in the 7th....

Edit: ugh you guys should just quit the rest of the year, this is NOT a baseball team.
