The IHL Wolves started wearing a sponsor patch in 1996 or '97. Some ECHL teams wear a sponsor across their entire lower back - I know Bakersfield does, and Toledo has a sponsor patch on the rear hem. This is far, far from being anything new in minor league sports.

For all the bird de lis haters I think the bird de lis isnt supposed to be a pelican and a fleur de lis I think its just a fleur de lis with a pelicans head. Thats what it looks like to me. Also the flair around the tip of the beak is just flair that fleur de lis have sometimes source I am from NOLA.

The Alaska Aces have been doing this for years, with a regular sponsor for the team on the jersey, and each individual player has a sponsor logo about the size of their name underneath the number on the back. Back when I worked for the Aces, there would be a contest among the players to see who would get sponsored by Mr. Prime Beef, and have that on the back of his jersey...

Welcome to 2008! (Bonus points if you can name the goalie)

EDIT: On the topic of Reading, didn't realize they ever used this jersey:

Story B: Red Wings go undefeated and score 100 goals in every game. They also beat a team comprised of Godzilla, the ghost of Abraham Lincoln, 2 Power Rangers and Betty White. Oh, and they played in the middle of Iraq on a military base. In the sand. With no ice. Santa gave them special sand-skates that allowed them to play in shorts and t-shirts in 115 degree weather. My hometown ECHL team the reading royals has sponsors on the jerseys! They have a metro bank patch on the upper right shoulder, and "highmark" below the numbers... It's happening in the usa!

Are you angry or excited about it?

You're much more likely to make it to the NHL out of the ECHL as a goalie than anything else, because there's only three players in front of you - the NHL team's backup and their AHL tandem. I'd throw enforcers into this as well, but that trend has been on the wane over the last 10-15 years as the role of that player type has dwindled.

First the NBA adopting ads on their jerseys and soon the NHL will adopt ads on jerseys

AHL teams and NBADL teams the minor leagues of their parent leagues are adopting ads and now the ECHL is the other minor league for the NHL is going to adopt ads to other ECHL teams
