NBA G-League Still Needs to Expand

Detroit Drive has a nice ring to it, but that's not going to happen. Realistcally, I would like the Detroit Horsepower (With the Grant Hill era Pistons logo, of course) or the Motor City Pistons.

Also, Walnut Creek is not were I expected the Pro Pathway team to go. I thought they would go to SoCal and be the Hollywood Pros or the San Diego Elite or something along those lines.

That was the name of an old Arena Football League Team:

It is what it is.

G League Update:

NBA G League Ignite Passes Test in First Full-Team Scrimmage - NBA G League

Quote

The future is starting to take shape.

This week, NBA G League Ignite stepped onto their practice court in Walnut Creek, California for their first full-team scrimmages against NBA G League alumni. The team, comprised of elite prospects eligible for next year’s NBA Draft and NBA G League veterans, settled in on both ends ended up winning their scrimmage Wednesday afternoon by 20 points. Coach Brian Shaw had his team focused and ready from the tip.

The 2021 NBA Draft prospects showed that while they’re still honing their crafts, their futures look bright. Right off the bat, Jonathan Kuminga made his presence felt by flexing his physical versatility on both ends.

G League will have a bubble at the same place the NBA had their bubble, at the Wide World of Sports Complex in Orlando.  18 teams will participate:

  2. Austin Spurs (Spurs)
  3. Canton Charge (Cavaliers)
  4. Delaware Blue Coats (Sixers)
  5. Erie BayHawks (Pelicans)
  6. Fort Wayne Mad Ants (Pacers)
  7. G League Ignite (Select Team)
  8. Greensboro Swarm (Hornets)
  9. Iowa Wolves (Timberwolves)
  10. Lakeland Magic (Magic)
  11. Long Island Nets (Nets)
  12. Memphis Hustle (Grizzlies)
  13. Oklahoma City Blue (Thunder)
  14. Raptors 905 (Raptors)
  15. Rio Grande Valley Vipers (Rockets)

Walnut Creek? To play where? And a competitor in what amounts to the Warriors area when the Warriors own their G-League team down in Santa Cruz...

Very odd move.

Not sure.. But, If I have to make a guess - I think it was someone who saw how the NBA did in Mexico and thought "Why don't we give this a try with the G League?"

Anyhow, the format for this season has been announced. It's very different then anything they've done before.

To open the season, each team gets 12 games to qualify for the Showcase Cup. The pods are as follows..

Central - Cleveland, Fort Wayne, Grand Rapids, Iowa, Motor City, Sioux Falls, Windy City, Wisconsin

East - Capital City, College Park, Delaware, Long Island, Maine, Raptors 905, Westchester

South - Austin, Birmingham, Greensboro, Lakeland, Memphis, Mexico City, Rio Grande Valley, Texas

West - Agua Caliente, G League Ignite, Oklahoma City, Salt Lake City, Santa Cruz, South Bay, Stockton

The four pod winners and the next best four teams will compete in the Showcase Cup, which will be held during the Winter Showcase event. Those who don't make the Cup finals will get two extra games at the showcase.

After the Showcase ends, the regular season begins as both Mexico City and the G League Ignite will take their leave for the time being. The Conference format is like this..

East - Capital City, College Park, Cleveland, Delaware, Fort Wayne, Grand Rapids, Greensboro, Lakeland, Long Island, Maine, Motor City, Raptors 905, Westchester, Windy City, Wisconsin

West - Agua Caliente, Austin, Birmingham, Iowa, Memphis, Oklahoma City, Rio Grande Valley, Salt Lake City, Santa Cruz, Sioux Falls, South Bay, Stockton, Texas

Each team competes in a 36 game season with the top six in each conference advancing to the playoffs.

Who thought placing a reserve league team in Mexico was a good idea?

To be fair they were announced before the pandemic, but sat out last season because of it. Had the world not been turned upside down it could have worked.
