kiwi_canadian
How many jerseys, either current or in the past, have been a third jersey or special event jersey and then got promoted to home and away? I'm talking NHL right now, but if you know of any others in other leagues or sports, post them. 1995-96 Penguins 3rd -> 1997-98 away 1997-98 Stars 3rd -> 1999-00 home & away 1997-98 Senators 3rd -> 1999-00 away 1997-98 Sharks 3rd -> 1998-99 home & away 1997-98 Flyers 3rd -> 2001-02 away 1997-98 Blues 3rd -> 1998-99 home & away 1998-99 Flames 3rd -> 2000-01 home & away 1998-99 Panthers 3rd -> 2003-04 home 1998-99 Capitals 3rd -> 2000-01 away 2000-01 Penguins 3rd 3rd -> 2002-03 home & away 2003-04 Thrashers 3rd -> 2006-07 home 2003-04 Minnesota Wild 3rd -> 2007-08 home 2006-07 Canucks 3rd -> 2007-08 home & away 2008-09 Sabres 3rd -> 2010-11 home & away 2008-09 Oilers 3rd -> 2009-10 home, 2011-12 away 2008-09 Kings 3rd -> 2011-12 home & away 2008-09 Islanders 3rd -> 2010-11 home & away 2008-09 Flyers 3rd -> 2009-10 home 2008-09 Sharks 3rd -> 2014-15 home & away 2009-10 Flyers WC -> 2010-11 away 2010-11 Ducks 3rd -> 2014-15 home & away Are there any others from other leagues or sports? hormone
Well, the penguins are probably doing it next year as well. off the top of my head, the nfl Broncos did this with orange and the pirates in mlb did this with their black jersey

I'm really hoping they do this as well. That being said...I'd love to see the Robo-Penguin make a return somewhere, maybe an an alt? I'm probably one of the few that liked that logo. Yeah, that's a weird one. They used the pattern, but the third did not actually get promoted. Are there other examples of that, or are they an anomaly? I'll respect any opinion that you can defend. And their current red home is based on their pre-Edge alternates. The original red alternate got a lot of use, but I'm not sure if it was ever officially their home sweater. MCM0313
I think that's how a lot of the BFBS pervading college basketball and football got started. Duke and Temple both started wearing black alts in the late '90s, then I think Temple went several years without wearing any cherry red jerseys. Tulsa's current set, the black was one of four (the others were white, blue, and yellow), with white meant to be the default home and blue the default away; I think they've worn black more than blue though. The Washington Huskies (both sports) kind of go back and forth between purple and black so you really don't know for sure which is default and which is alternate. They're (IMO) one of the few teams that actually look decent in BFBS, though, so it's not as annoying to me as it is with (for instance) Duke. I hate saying this but San Jose's home and road jerseys are so boring right now that I honestly wish they just promoted their black third with a matching away, and then used this season to begin a quick transition to the throwback jersey. I like the full 3D Shark logo much better than the current updated version of their original logo, and I also like the alternate for its lack of that one random orange stripe on the arms. I'm probably a minority opinion on that. I think San Jose should always be teal but right now, at least in my opinion, San Jose's third jersey is by far their best one out of those three. As for their throwback jersey, it absolutely blows all three of their main jerseys away by light years.
colinturner95
This is on a SO much smaller scale than the big 4, but my U18 travel team did this. We went from the Dallas Stars 2007-2013 uniforms: (That's me holding the goalie's hand, with the bandaids on my forehead) I hated those uniforms, so we fundraised and we got these as a third jersey: and finally got the matching whites for Nationals in Amherst at the end of this month. The Canucks' '06-'07 third was their vintage mid 70's Stick In Rink sweater and their '07-'08 home & away set is their current copy-and-paste disaster with the orca from the previous primary set with the "VANCOUVER" arched above and the updated SIR shoulder patches. Same thing as the Sharks though in a very round about way though I guess. Yes it was vintage BUT it was their 3rd jersey that final season with the navy, maroon and silver.
