winghaz
Does anybody know how the tradition of wearing gray as road uniforms started in baseball?
Gothamite
Nope, only that it's nearly as old as the game itself.
Yankj1
Yea, at first both of the teams would wear white, but it became to confusing to the fans. What happened is that the road team jerseys were usually grey from being on the road, and not able to wash them. This was the only way fans could tell the difference, so when the rule was created they went with grey, because that was what the jerseys looked like. paynomind
Its a tradition whose time has passed, in my mind. I want team color jerseys instead of grey or worse, sand.

buckeyes1
i think the padres sand uniforms are good, they are unique and different from the same old gray uniforms that every other team wears.

STL FANATIC
It goes against all my general rules for uniform designs to like grey roads, but I do.Probably for a few reason, but perhaps for mainly just this one: baseball uniforms that are colorful, and all one color, look bad. I don't know why it works for 2 and 1/2 of the other major sports (works in basketball, works though isn't always done in hockey, and works sometimes in football), but it just doesn't look good in baseball. I'm OK with colored tops, but colored pants don't generally look good. Perhaps there is another solution to this, but it hasn't really come to me yet. As it is, I'd never want the Cardinals wearing a red jersey with red pants.
JetsLuvver
Why do people have problems with gray baseball road uniforms but not white football road jerseys?Pretty much EVERY football team from high school to the NFL wears white away from home (and sometimes at home) and no one ever claims they're boring or outdated. Sabrejeff
the best gray unis are imo teh ones with pinstripes. Agreed. How can the Yankees call themselves "The Pinstripes" when they are only pinstriped 50% of the time?Colorado and Arizona are the only ones that do by my count and I think their grays are great. SEMOSTLfan
I am offended that anyone would suggest baseball teams wear team color jersies. As a baseball purist i believe that part of the games uniqueness is that every team on the field looks uniform with one another. I personally believe that all these freakin alternates should be banned from baseball. I get tired of teams like the stupid STUPID cubs wearing those blue jersies all the freakin time and nothing is worse than the black vest purple sleeve crap the rockies are wearing this year. If a team wants to wear an alternate say for sunday games thats fine but one game a week is enough and only one team in the game should be allowed to wear an alternate so we dont have a situation like this past weekend at wrigley with the cubs in blue and the sox in black. Its just way too much color for a baseball game. Ok so i read what i said and its kinda harsh..i hope nobody takes it the wrong way i just had to rant on the subject. The more stuff they can wear on the field, the more stuff they can sell. It's truly that simple, and if they look ridiculous on the field, oh well...it's seen as an investment.I agree with a previous post saying no to colored tops with colored pants, a la the Indians years ago, but the colored top/white or gray pants thing is not a flattering look at all. Keep the alternates for what they look like they're for: BP and exhibitions.

Home whites and away grays should be a staple of baseball. Up until this year ,my beloved Atlanta Braves resisted the alt jersey.

You're right. The Yankees wouldn't sell nearly as much merchandise as they do if they didn't wear all those things on the field.
