derivitive minor league logos

This is my first post but have been watching this board for a long time. There are a great deal of talented designers out there. I used to sketch alternate logos and think I was unique but I see so many people who not only do it but would wipe the floor up with me!

I also like the discussions and challenges. It is like alternate universes (the WHAT IF worlds of old comics) Ok, enough nerd.

My question is this, and you may have talked about it before, but: what do people think are the best minor league logos, past or present, that are derived from the major leagues.

Example: The old Binghampton Whalers of the AHL turning the Hartford Whaler logo on its side to form a B or The pittsfield Mets altering the NEW YOrk Logo to form a P and mountains instead of a skyline.

You could also include teams that don't take the same name but incorporate the design of the symbol or colors--The Fredericton Express from the Quebec Nordiques symbol would apply here.

What do ya's think?

Well, this is me being a homer and has nothing to do with logos, but when the Arizona Diamondbacks hooked up with the Lethbridge (Alta.) team in the rookie-ball Pioneer League, the team changed its name from the Mounties to the Black Diamonds. I thought it was brilliant, playing off the parent club's name AND the area's ties to coal mining.

Of course, I was in junior high at the time, and the team only stuck around for a couple more seasons before moving to the States.

OK, thanks for letting me blather on, and a hearty :welcome: to you!

I always liked the 80's era Reading Phillies cap logo. It was the phillies swirl "P" with a little tail to make the R. I can't find any pics, though.

I love the Springfield Cardinals cap. They are the new AA affiliate for St. Louis.

That was gonna be my pick. Not just Springfield though, all the Cards minor league clubs from Memphis to Plam Beach.

My favorite Minor league logo is the Sacramento Rivercats logo but thats not derived from the A's so it got overruled ^_^

Personally? I love the Detroit's Class A Affiliate, the Lakeland Tigers - I just think the L works well with the Tiger.

I always liked what the Maine Mariners did with the Flyers' logo but thought the Springfield Indians' take on the Bruins logo for the one, short year they were affiliated was cheap looking and SO disappointing. I remember liking the Cincinnati Swords' Sabres-like design. The current Philly Phantoms' Phlyers-like logo is just a little too weird for me.

I agree about the phantoms. And Maine Mariners were pretty cool too.

The Adirondack Red Wings had no change in their uniforms to distinguish them from Detroit--Am I remembering that right?

I liked the Battle Creek Yankees, as long as they lasted. Much better than the Staten Island Yankees, who didn't even bother with an "SI" cap.

dont they have the yankees "NY" on the left sleave?

my two favorites happen to be the farm teams of my two favorite baseball teams:

dunedin blue jays

and

rochester red wings (even if it is just an alt. its still pretty nice)

Just outta curiosity, why the heck do the Rochester Red Wings wear a hat with FC on it?

i think it stands for rochester's nickname, the flower city, or something like that.

The Rochester Red Wings' FC stands for "Flour City" or "Flower City", both nicknames for Rochester IIRC.

I admit I'm still on a Nats high but I like the Potomac Nationals' cap (not so much their primary logo) and the fact that the press has labelled them "P-Nats":

They also have a mascot named "Uncle Slam" who, unfortunately looks a little Youppi-ish:

With a name like that I'd have expected a muscular wrestler-type.

Nope, they wear the Yankees patch on their sleeve:

Here's the cap:

That's the best they could do? Their wordmark?
