TruColor
I don't know how much any of you have been following the construction progress on the new Cardinals Stadium (that is its working name for now), but the organization that runs the thing just posted a new video explaining how the rollout field will work. Here are the URLs (high and low bandwidth):Field Tray Video Preview (high bandwidth)Field Tray Video Preview (low bandwidth)There is a live webcam and many photos of the construction progress on the Cardinals' website at the following address:Cardinals StadiumThe Arizona Sports & Tourism Authority's site is as follows:AZ-STAI'm on that flippin' webcam once or twice a day... BBTV
My favorite part of the video is when the announcer says "it will take 65 minutes for the field to make its one-way trip in...or out of the stadium."Isn't that a round trip? "The views expressed here are mine and do not reflect the official opinion of my employer or the organization through which the Internet was accessed." wheateater
Like Bucfan, I thought a retractable field was something EA Sports made up for its Madden games. It's pretty cool to think this is real, but why is it retractable anyway? Forgive me if there's an obvious answer to this question, but what kind of other things can be done inside the stadium when the football tray is outside? Cardinals Stadium will have a utility grid built into the floor of the stadium - for trade shows, potential basketball games (NCAA Final Four maybe), etc. This way, they can have an indoor/outdoor multi-purpose facility with real grass. TruColor
Absolutely fascinating! But you know they'll be the laughingstock of the league the first time they have to cancel a game due to a grass malfunction. Some of the guys on the Cardinals boards have been joking about the possibility that the field starts rolling back outside when the game is going on.That would be kinda funny. Sorta.Apparently, the roll-out field idea is being used in a couple of other stadiums around the world, and the architects and construction (Eisenman Architects, HOK Sport, and Hunt Construction) are building a number of fail-safes into the design. They've been studying how these things are supposed to work...Cardinals Stadium will not be the guinea pig for roll-out field technology.

officeglenn
At 1/8 mph, watching that grass move will be like ... watching grass grow. Now all they need is hydraulic lifts at either end, so the Cardinals will truly be running downhill.
KCScout76
The field tray is cool - even though it won't be like opening your garage door, just slower. How long does the roof take to retract or open at Toronto's Stadium???? Seadragon76
You know how it long it took before we got a potshot on Ricky Williams on this topic... Okay, so that doesn't help.It sounds like a crazy idea, but then again it's the Cardinals. That team is extremely desperate for anything new.
