Rangers Win 15-Round Shootout

To everyone who said coming into this season that shootouts to determine games would be the end of hockey, I hope you managed to catch the Rangers v. Caps games last night. Tied at two after regulation, the Capitals made a gutsy decision to have Jaromir Jagr's stick measured and got the call, meaning the Caps had a 4 on 3 power play for much of the overtime period. The Rangers killed it off and held on to take the game to the most exciting bit of hockey this season.

I'll just say this... it's a video you MUST watch if you're a hockey fan. Note... The Rangers website doesn't have the video up yet so I got it off of the Caps' site, but as a Ranger fan it was much more exciting to see it on their broadcast.

Especially the last goal...

How was that better than playing a 10 or 20 minute OT period?

What is wrong with a tie, anyway?

I think you play to win the game. I kind of feel cheated after a tie, like so what? There should be a winner and a loser to every game IMO.

This year in the NHL it doesn't matter if it is a Shoot-out, Overtime, or Regular win, they all count as wins. The ones that gain points are Wins, Losses and Shootout losses. It used to be Win, Loss, Tie, Overtime Loss.

I like how the NHL did away with ties, but I think all games should be worth 3 points if they're going to award a point for an OT loss.

Here's my solution:

Regulation Win = 3 points

Overtime/Shooutout Win - 2 points

Overtime/Shootout Loss - 1 point

Regualtion Loss = 0 points

Having not watched the NHL since its return, and having seen shootouts only in ECHL games where the outcome was decided fairly quickly, I have a "newbie to the shooutout" question.

Team A gets 3 shots in the shoout, as does Team B.

If, after each team gets three, each has the same number of goals in the shootout. Team A then shoots and scores on its 4th shot. Is the game over at that point, or does Team B get the opportunity to tie it back up?

Team B gets to try to match it. After 3 each, the first unanswered goal wins.

Likewise, if either team goes up 2-0 in the shootout, they forego the third shot.

I definitely agree. I love having a winner in every game.

And I know there are those out there that think that shootouts are awful, but every single time, fans are standing and screaming and it is the most exciting time.

I think there's a problem, though. Because you get the same number of points for a win and loss in overtime as you do in a shootout, you sort of get the feeling that you don't want anyone to score in overtime. You just want to see the shootout. I hear the fans clap when overtime ends, and yea, we should be excited, but here's my way of making points for a loss different in OT then in the SO:

Win: 2 points (Reg, OT, or SO)

Reg and OT loss: 0 points

SO loss: 1 point

Records could be like the records in the AHL: W-L-OTL-SOL

Or, because you get 0 points for a loss in Reg and in OT, the records could be: W-L-SOL

[Herman Edwards] You play to win the game. Hello! [/Herman Edwards]

What's wrong with ties is that teams played for ties (they still play for OT, but still). Games where they keep score should have winners and losers. We want resolution.

I bet you everyone in MSG was on his or her feet during that shootout marathon. It's the most exciting play in sports.

I know, it would be like overtime during the previous season was irrelevant because you knew everyone wanted to take the easy way out by getting the tie, therefore no chances would be taken by either team to possibly win the game.

Now, with the shootout being implied, overtime is exciting as hell with the SO included, and I love it. These new rules and better pace have turned me into a hockey (Thrashers) fan

Why dont they just do it like this?

W-L

Win, OT win, Shootout win: 1 pt

Loss, OT Loss, Shootout loss": 0 pts

You dont see any other sport awarding "Half" wins or extra points because of Extra Innings or Overtime

I couldn't agree more. If ties are gone, then teams should only be judged on their overall W-L records, regardless of how those wins were earned.

That said, I'd like to add that I hate the shootout. It completely removes teamwork from deciding the game.
