No blue for the Reds in 2007

I was listening to the Reds game on 700 WLW when Marty Brennaman answered a fan's question about new uniforms for next year. I missed the first part of Marty's answer which was about new uniforms, but I did catch the second half of what he was saying and he said that their will be no blue for the Reds in 2007. Just thought I'd let everyone know. I'm glad to hear this, as I didn't want to Reds to adopt blue and make them the 40th MLB team wearing red and blue.

it was a rumor that the reds may adopt blue as a secondary color for next season.

So are they keeping black or just going old school? I hope the latter is the case. I dont like the black.

I think they are getting rid of the black. The word is that the new owners who bought the team last winter hate the black, wanted to change the uniforms this year, but couldn't get it done on time.

Just change the home white cap to red.

i love the story on the short sleeves that season. it was the jackie robinson anniversary and deion sanders paid tribute by shortening his sleeves the way jackie wore them. the MLB came down on him and ordered him to stop because it wasnt a uniform length. the rest of the team got behind him, cut the sleeves, and forced the MLBs hand

This is great to hear! I hope the Reds never again bring Blue into their uniforms. God knows, there's enough Red and Blue teams out there for several lifetimes.

I personally think the Black works just fine for them. They could maybe scale it back a little, like dropping the black hat, and the black road undershirts, but I think it looks great on the bill of the cap, as the piping on the red jersey, shadowing the letters and logos, and for the shoes.

All in all, I think they're darn near perfect.

WTF were they thinking putting the front number on the right side of those mid-90's road uniforms? Who the F thought that was a good idea? Frankly, I don't think that front numbers really belong on any non-script marked uniform (especially one with a symmetrical(sp) vertically arched wordmark) but they've traditionally been placed on the left for a reason!

The BLACK is fine. :D The only problem is they use toooooooo much of it! If they emphasized more on red and use as little black as possible, nobody would have any problems.

College sports as we know them are just about dead. The lid is off on all the corruption that taints just about every major program and every decision that the schools or the NCAA make is only about money, money, and more money. We'll have three 16+ team super-conferences sooner rather than later, killing much of the regional flair and traditional rivalries that make college sports unique and showing the door to any school that doesn't bring money to the table in the process. Pretty soon the smaller schools are going to have to consider forming their own sanctioning body to keep the true spirit of college sports alive because the NCAA will only get worse in it's excess from here

There's nothing wrong with black, as long as it's just secondary, like outlines or shadows. I think the black makes the red elements stand out more.

If you keep the black, then the red pinstripes won't look as bad, because they won't wash out the other graphics on the road uniform.

Red and black are a pretty unique combination in the Majors, aside from Houston. Even then, you're not going to confuse the two cities. Everyone else uses red and navy. Or navy and black. Or orange and black.

You don't suppose they're the team using brick next year (as rumored in the other thread that a team will). Two shades of red could look cool, or could look awful. But it might be interesting.

Actually, I caught a bit of Marty Brennaman's comments during the game Sunday, and I thought he clarified that the Reds wouldn't be incorporating navy blue, but instead royal blue into their unis, like they wore in the 50s and 60s. The emailer to whom he was replying thought the changes were coming in '08, but Marty said, nope, '07 was the year. Didn't sound like he'd seen a design, but did sound like it was a done deal. I hope it's not, though. Enough with the blue and red. Been done too much. The Reds should be RED.

I'm kind of on the fence with the Reds; they do have a history of incorporating blue of some kind in their uniforms so it doesn't bother me that much.

They added blue outlines to the "Cincinnati" on their road uniforms in 1917, and then around the wishbone C/Reds logo on the home uniform in 1919. I can't tell from the "Dressed to the Nines" site if the blue trim was dropped on the 1930/31 home uniforms, but it definitely was back in 1932. By 1939, the wishbone C/Reds logo had a blue background (much like the current black background) which was worn through 1955. That was 39 straight years with at least some blue trim.

Blue was dropped during the Commie Scare 50s (1956-60) when the team was the "Redlegs), but came back for 1961-1966.

They were red only from 1967-1998, or 32 straight years until the black arrived in 1999.

I also could have lived with the black if they would have dropped the black undershirt and black road cap as others have said.

I would like a red and white only, kind of like what the Royals did this year with some piping on the uniform instead of the ultra plain 1968-1971 uniforms (and I don't think anyone wants the pullovers back do they?)

I think a combination of a deep burgandy and bright red could look pretty sharp, perhaps with silver trim. Two-toned blue is in style right now, so why shouldn't red be next?

Then again, it would probably only work if burgandy was the main color, and that's just not the Reds.

I am not sure if red and brick are far enough apart from each other that this would look "right", instead of looking like the uniform designer just got lazy and didn't color match properly.

2-tone blue works because sky blue has been associated with athletics for a long time, at the collegiate and pro levels. Even with that being said, many people find the color to be "too soft" for (men's) athletics.

However, "sky red" is pink, which no men's sports teams would probably ever wear. Going the other way, keep darkening red and you head toward mauve/magenta and the purple family, which would make the uniform look more like a bouquet of flowers - also a look many sports teams would opt against.

2-tone green? Maybe. Brown/tan's worked in the past, and black/gray is always a good look. But 2-tone red would be tough to pull off, IMO.

In order for the Mets' run of 12 losses in 17 games to mean something, the Phillies still had to win 13 of 17.

2-tone green? Maybe.

See 1980s (?) Milwaukee Bucks.
