nitroseed
I noticed on the Daily Quickie on ESPN that NHL Commish Gary Bettman may be considering changing the point value of a win from 2 to 3. Has anyone heard anything else about this? And, if this goes through, what kind of effect do you think it will have on the league?

slapshot
That might not be a bad idea. You get the same points in OT if you tie or lose. A win is one extra point. May as well make it worth the while to try and win the game.Too many teams play the trap in the last few minutes of a tie game, knowing they're guaranteed at least one point. Maybe more incentive to go for the win is what the league needs to make it more exciting. Back-to-Back Fatal Forty Champion 2015 & 2016
CC97
It's a good idea, because it will make overtime even more exciting.ButIt would shatter the record books, it's a drastic change. Teams will be getting 140 point seasons, all teams will have over 100 points every season.I dont know. --- Chris Creamer Founder/Editor, SportsLogos.Net "The Mothership" • News • Facebook • X/Twitter • Instagram
-kj
It's much like what FIFA did before the 1998 World Cup, and made it standard across its member leagues.I'm not sure I like it, but it does bring up interesting scenarios.Ties could still be worth 1, OTLs could still be worth one, but make OTWs worth 2 instead of 3.Eh, I still prefer the 2-0-1 system, though I don't overly mind 2-0-1-1 so much. Saintsfan
This is a toughy, 3 points for a win works well in soccer, and could work okay in hockey, but I dunno, it doesn't really seem all that necessary, how often does an NHL team play for a draw anyway? I wouldnt have thought it would be easy to in hockey, were invariably scores are a little higher than in soccer. 2011/12 WFL Champions
See Red
I've essentially given up with hockey. The only time I find it worth my time to see is International (olympics, mostly) with the larger rinks and shortage of commercials. I used to be a hockey fanatic... but now I'm through. One would have to think there's a reason it gets worse ratings in the US than the now defunct XFL did.
zer0dotcom
Lately, the scoring in some games make it seem alot like soccer... a not draw rule would be interesting. that way teams would have to play, eliminate sitting back and accepting a single point. I still can't believe that teams get a point for losing...this isn't kiddy camp where everyone gets a prize so no feelings are hurt...

slapshot
Here's a solution .... eliminate overtime!Eliminating OT doesn't solve anything. Within the last 5 minutes of a tied game, both teams will play it safe knowing they'll get at least 1 point if the game goes OT or not. OT gives 5 extra minutes for 1 extra point. Mac the Knife
Either...3 points for a win,0 points for a loss,1 point for a tie, or1 point for an overtime loss, - or -2 points for a win,0 points for a loss,1 point for a tie, or- or - Ditch ties, and ditch the point system altogether. Wins decide playoff spots, with an NFL-style tiebreaking procedure (which I know diehards, they already have)... Make 'em play overtime, non-stop, until somebody scores. Forget 5-minute periods, forget 20-minute periods. Make 'em go marathon-style until someone puts the puck in the net. You want to earn a playoff berth? Earn it by winning, not tying, going into OT on a consistent basis, or even winning via shootout.
STL FANATIC
I hate the system how it is, and that would hardly be better. Yes, OT is more exciting right now, but the system makes no sense. Go back to how it was.All Wins- 2All Loses- 0All Ties- 1Eliminate 4 on 4.I'll expand later. JUSTIN STRIEBEL | PORTFOLIO | RESUME | CONTACT
Stampman
NO SHOOT OUTS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!Do I feel strongly about that? You bet--shoot outs are contrived--they have no place in a team sport. Are breakaways and penalty shots exciting--ususally yes.BUT (and here's the important point) they come as a result of the regular play of the game--not as a contrived way to break a tie. zer0dotcom
If they want hockey to be hockey, re-write the rulebook to the way it was in the 1980s, early 90s. after that, it'll be up to the player to decide the outcome. Too few goals scored? well, maybe the shooters aren't up to snuff. We've been spoiled in the past few decades with the likes of Gretzky, Lemeuix, and Jagr winning scoring titles and setting records. If the goalies are stoppin gore pucks, hey, thats the way things go.Hockey has just evolved to fit the trend of the past decades, which is much higher scoring players as mentioned before. So, better Goalies have come out of the woodwork, more emphasis has been placed on defence to combat this offense. So, in summation, Mr. Bettman, PLEASE STOP TRYING TO FIX HOCKEY! IT IS NOT BROKEN!(apolgies for repeating myself, but this is a very passionate subject for me)
