Colorado Rockies' black vests

Last night was the first time the TBS broadcasts crossed over into Morgan/McCarver territory for me. Before the game, TBS ran a little summary of the Rockies late-season winning streak, with highlights from each of the key victories in the streak. Then around the fourth, Chip Caray talked at some length about how the Rockies have been wearing the black vests for the whole streak, so they're not going to change. Then TBS again showed a selection of the video highlights from the winning streak.

The catch? Most of the highlights of the winning streak showed the Rockies wearing their normal pinstriped home and away jerseys as they won the games that put them in contention. So thanks, Chip, for telling us something we could see with our own eyes wasn't true. Someone notify Fox and ESPN: Chip Caray is ready to join you now.

Anyway, for a team that has four different alternate jerseys -- pinstriped vest, purple shirt, black vest, and black CoolBase vest -- why don't the Rockies have a single solid-color alt with the home "Rockies" script? The white vest has the CR logo; the other three alts all say "Colorado."

I suppose I almost have to root against Colorado now: Though I really like Colorado's regular home and road uniforms, I think their alternates make them one of the two or three ugliest teams in baseball. If they win the NL pennant wearing what may be the second worst uniform top in the big leagues, they'll never change. Team needs more purple, less black, but this playoff run risks cementing super-ugly black space-cadet vests as the signature look of the team. Ugh! Or maybe if the D-Backs can just win tonight, Colorado will go back to wearing their beautiful regular uniforms. (With the purple alternate caps, please!)

You've basically done a great job summarizing why I hate 99% of all baseball broadcasters, analysts, and on field reporters. They are never ending fountains of consistent idiotic non-sensical over analyzations and baseless claims, of which they are never held accountable for. I'd rather hear the late Harry Carey talk mindlessly about the full moon over Wrigley Field then Tim McCarver try to sound like he's not a complete a$$h*le.

I watch nearly all sporting events with the sound off. Believe me, I'm much happier that way. I suggest you give it a try.

I have watched it with the mute on, but the little red verticle lines across the bottom of my screen annoy the hell out of me.

The Rox hat is a keeper - in fact - the purple hat they have is terrific - but they never wear it anymore.

On the concepts side of this website some have created some awesome looking Rockies suits - and they have done what shoud be done, namely: On the Rox home uniform, the pinstripes should be shown the door, the uniform, in my opinion, should be a white shell, with purple lettering - and a black drop shadow around the letters and numerals.

The road uniform is - as I have noted before - VERY sharp, and if they wear it tonight I'll be extremely happy. The grey shirt and pants with the name COLORADO in purple, with the purple pinstripes is very-very nice. No changes should be made - but if they could somehow improve upon that I'm all for it!

Is this not the epitome of being in a teams head?

Arizona will indeed wear the black uniform tops tonight - with the express purpose of not allowing the Rockies to wear their lucky charms.

It says here that the ploy while creative, if not smacking of paranoia, simply won't work.

Awesome!

I'm not the only one! :)

Apparently the black jersey's weren't the reason Colorado was winning...they won again tonight.

Glad Arizona went black tonight... it took me a long time to realize this but the Rockies actually have a base for a very nice identity -- it's not quite "there" yet, but it could be tweaked and improved, particularly the logo, and some jerseys done away with, but overall I think they're a pretty sharp looking baseball team. If they stuck with the sleeveless white homes and these away jerseys, they'd be a great looking team. I absolutely hate to say this -- believe me... I hate saying it -- but the gradient helmets have... ugh... grown on me since I very first saw them, even though I didn't think they were that bad to begin with.

They could both wear black, not an issue. I remember an American League games between the Mariners and Brewers and Indians and Brewers where both teams wore navy jerseys. Also happened in the 2001 season (don't think it happened in the ALDS though) when the Mariners wore their "SEATTLE" road alts at Cleveland, who wore their "INDIANS" home alts.

I think teams are strongly encouraged not to wear jersey colors that are similar (or the same, in this case).

If the D-Backs wore black jersey's in game two, the Rocks would not wear black.

I don't think the D-Backs will though. Webb has been the pitcher who usually wore black at home this year. Webb very likely won't pitch at home in this series. Livan also has a few times too, but he will start on the road.

Then if im Arizona, ill wear black game 2, to get Colorodo out their blacks since they think theirs are so lucky lately

They took my advice...lol :D

Colorado could field a team wearing kilts and pink belly shirts and still kill the competition. They're on a roll regadless of what they wear.

Good god, man, don't give them any ideas. I don't think the Rockies have yet met an ugly uniform idea they haven't adopted. (Though I have seen some excellent black-gray-purple tartans they could wear if they go for the kilts.)

I would go further than InTheEnd -- the Rockies don't have the basis for a good identity with tweaks. No tweaks are necessary. If they would just stick to their regular gray pinstriped roads, their white pinstriped home uniforms (long sleeved), purple cap at all times, and the purple alt jersey, this would be one of the best-dressed teams in baseball, and far and away the best of the 1990s expansion teams. Just that touch of less black, more purple with the purple cap and no black vests and this would be a team as beautiful as Denver itself.

(Though I wouldn't be against some tweaks, like making the purple a bit more red, and adopting a C cap logo, without the R.)

I hope the Rockies have learned their lesson and will wear their real home uniforms when the series goes back to Denver Sunday.

As much as I hate the Rockies' black vests, I'm really getting a kick out of all this because it's showing just how big a role superstition plays in baseball.

The Rockies keep wearing the black because they keep winning in them. So, after Colorado wins Game 1 of the NLCS, the Diamondbacks wear black for Game 2, forcing the Rockies to wear gray.

And the Rockies win anyway. Oh well, gray is just a shade of black. :D

So what's going to happen for Game 3?

Arizona's black jersey and cap combo is easily my favorite uniform in the league. It just looks so clean.

Yea, Arizona is wearing their black jersey

Arizona's black jersey >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> Rockies black > Athletics black (Whether it be the 2000 version or next years)

next year's oakland black jersey? i missed something.

An Oakland team source confirmed Internet speculation that the A's will have a black jersey that will serve as a home alternate jersey next year. The A's had a black alternate jersey in 2000, but next year's will have gold trim and "look much sharper," according to the source.
