Las Vegas 51s identity to be no more after 2008

According to the LVRJ, Stevens Baseball Group (who just bought the team from Mandalay Baseball Properties) has stated that they're planning on changing the name of the team after 2008. Derek Stevens, the CEO of the group, said that the team is planning to have the public pick the team name, which is great because i remember when the team changed their name from the Stars to the 51s all of us in Las Vegas were really ticked about the name change, we really did think it was the stupidest idea ever, contrary to what many of the people on this board believe.

Stevens also said that the team is going to introduce a new solid blue cap with LV on it, no word on whether it will be an interlocking like the parent club Dodgers. Stevens also mentioned how he isn't afraid of the Dodgers severing ties after the season and talked about building a domed stadium in the future. Personally, as a native Las Vegan, I am very happy to hear that the 51s identity will be dead as well as Cosmo the Jar Jar Binks mascot of the team. This is a long time coming for the baseball fans of the valley, now if we could break .500 for the first time in 5 years, then it would be even better.

Here's the article:

Considering they have the Yankees of AAA, or in other words Oakland's big league club in their division, I wouldn't hold my breath.

Interesting choice for them. Jump on the "aliens" bandwagon right after the X-Files dies off, then jump back off right about the time that the new X-Files movie comes out. Hell of a marketing department.

The cap sounds interesting. If I were running the team, I'd want to re-create the Dodgers' cap with my own two initials.

Now, was it really necessary to take a potshot at others?

Minor leagues are looser than the majors - you might not be right about that.

Gambling is just the absolute last taboo of baseball, though.

Can you bet on minor league baseball there? Obviously there wouldn't be much demand anyway but was that a condition of putting a team there?

I agree about the sign, though, they could call the team the Diamonds (baseball AND cards!), have a blue hat with that white and yellow diamond stripped down to the red "LAS VEGAS".

I remember the Stars and were disappointed that they changed to the 51's, but I've grown to love the logo and the name. If they went back to the Stars, I'd be fine with it. I just ask that when they change their name back, that Albequerque changes their name back to the Dukes and become LA's top minor league affiliate. :D

Don't know, but that's an interesting question. The 51s/Stars have been in Vegas since 1983....

They've never drawn all that well, despite having a decent facility (Cashman Field) for Triple A needs.

Thing is, who wants to spend a day outside in the broiling Vegas summer heat?

I think "Snake Eyes" might make a cool new name. They could come up with some kind of Viper for the mascot and/or logo....maybe a secondary logo designed around a pair of dice.....you never know......just my 2 cents. ;)

I have to admit I like this one. It fits MiLB and has both a gambling style with a potential separate identity.
