NBA Offseason Central

The Hawks now HAVE to pay Smith if they don't wanna go back into complete laughingstock mode. If anything, it'll be a good PR move, keeping a future all-star and hometown kid.

But you having to move Zaza into C illustrates how awful our bench is right now, and how the Hawks absolutely need a capable big man. The fact that Zaza was the enforcer on the team at the tail end of last season is a sad testament to how this team lacks a post presence (other than Smoove flying in from outer space to swat away shots.).

The local sports talk floated an idea: go after Charlotte's Emeka Okafor, who's an RFA. At best, you get to sign the guy and lose a draft pick (I think that's how it works), and at worst, you make a division team match a deal and make them overspend what they intended on offering if they choose to keep him.

The Hawks should go after the Sixers' Louis Williams.

Look at Chilldress: Living out his dreams of going abroad. I can't say I'm happy to see him leave, but I'm happy to see him acting out on one of his dreams. Good for him, I hope they win a title or two in Europe, so he can (hopefully) come back to the Hawks once he's done. The Hawks still retain his rights should he come back to the NBA, which makes 2 players the Hawks can make that claim to (the other being David Andersen.)

That said, I'd have no objections with Louis Williams as a replacement for Chill, and I'd go after Okafor if we can't get Smith back. The problem with Okafor is that he's injury prone, and since Speedy already made the Hawks look like fools after he turned out to be Glass Joe, I'd think they might go for Okafor with some trepidation.

There appears to be more and more reports about European teams interested in signing NBA RFAs. Carl Landry, Delonte West, Sasha Vujacic, Andris Biedrins, they're not stars, but they're significant rotation players on their respective teams.

The Hawks only retain his rights if they make qualifying offers each year he is gone, in which case he would count against their cap even though he isn't on the team. I'd say it's unlikely that they'd retain his rights for much longer - he'll likely be an UFA in a season or two.

Ron Artest to the Rockets.

Good deal for the Kings. Let's see how Artest does in Houston.

Hmm, Artest to H-Town for benchwarmer of the decade, Bobby Jackson, and what's likely to be a mid-to-late 1st rounder...

I wouldda figured Artest had a little more value than that.

The fact that he's crazy cuckoo bananas kinda took his trade value down. :P

That's quite an impressive team that will once again crash and burn in the first round, complete with T-Mac pouty face, for Houston.

I usually would agree, But I'm not and here's why.

Artest wants MORE money. Hence why he didnt opt out. This season, he's playing for that HUGE contract at the end of next season. AND now he's playing for his favorite coach on an absolutely loaded squad. Look for this to be Artest's best season yet.

And on a team that has a "SOFT" Dynamic Duo with no clear leader and lacks that "fiery" intensity, Artest is just what the Rockets needed.

I don't like the deal, but I can't say I'm not happy that my Bobby Jackson jersey is back to being relevant again :)

Thats y I like the trade on Artest behalf, because I too believe this will be his best season in a while. Now with thats said I dunno if this trade can put them in the NBA Finals, makes them better yes but still not better than the Spurs, Lakers and Hornets.
