Who the hell needs Kazmir when you've got this monster?

(note: I'm VERY happy to have Kazmir in Anaheim, too, but really, Kendry's the man.

Hmmm... where are all the people that when the Rockies won the first game of a series with the Dodgers, were claiming that the Rockies were coming and hot and the Dodgers were about to impload? 6 days later the Dodger take their second series this week, and the Rockies loose 5 of 6 to the Dodgers and the Giants. The Dodgers may not be the greatest team out there, but they just keep doing what they've done all year, win the series their involved in. The Dodgers are 12-3 vs the Rockies, so if you think the Dodgers or Dodger fans are scared of the Rockies, that won't be happening and we'd love to play them in the NLCS and win the series 4-1.

Colorado's remaining schedule is a main reason why.

A 10-game homestand with the Mets, Reds, and Diamondbacks, a 9-game road trip (with 6 of those against the Padres and Arizona), another 9-game homestand that could be filled with teams playing out the string (the Cardinals should have the Central locked up by then), then 3 games in Los Angeles.

Colorado may not be the better team, but they can certainly take advantage of their soft schedule and battle the Dodgers for the West title. The Rockies, feasibly, only play 6 more games against teams that still have something to play for.

Phillies take 2 of 3 vs Atlanta and Lidge might be regaining his 2008 form...

ROTFL. This is what he's done all year. He'll be shelled hard by Wednesday.

For the sake of the overall chances of the Phillies winning it all in 2009, I am hoping that the optimistic viewpoint prevails.

Better yet, hit more of those vaunted home runs with runners on base, do a better job of situational hitting, strand fewer runners, and provide more consistent offense in all areas of the lineup. Then the Phillies will put enough runs on the board to keep the game out of a save situation altogether. Some may even say that we stand a better chance of seeing that happen than of seeing Lidge rediscover 2008.

So, basically you're just asking or Ibañez to regain his pre-injury orm. All those things you mentioned (situational hitting, runners LOB, consistency, etc.) were much better before the all star break than now. I think Raul may need some more rest or maybe even a trip to the 15-day, because he's obviously not right.

So.... How 'bout them Cardinals?! :)

10 games up in the Central, just figured I'd give them some recognition here...

You may now return to your regularly schedule discussion of every other team except the one with the biggest division lead in all of Major League Baseball, and quite possibly the hottest team playing right now.

Have a nice day.

Dear 2009 Cardinals,

Running away with your division by a lead of 10 or more isn't exactly the best thing in the world.

Signed,

2008 Angels

In 2004 the Cardinals won in by 13 games and in 2005 by 11. They still managed to advance to the World Series in 04 and then at least to the NLCS in 05. In both years, however, they were derailed by a surging and hot Wild Card entry.

Of course, in 2006, the Cardinals only won by 1.5 games (a game was not made up because it became unnecessary), but they weren't playing good ball to sneak that thing out. Instead they blew a 6 game lead with about a week to play and were lucky to hold on. Still, the second the playoffs started, they became the hot team and took the World Series.

The point? It's all unpredictable. You've just gotta be hot in the playoffs. Sometimes surging down the stretch and carrying that into the playoffs is what works, sometimes teams don't get hot until the playoffs, and then sometimes the dominant teams that do have the big leads also manage to turn it back on when the playoffs roll around. And of course, sometimes not.

Make the playoffs, and come with good pitching. Beyond that, it's a bit of a crapshoot.

But I suppose an additional point would be that La Russa is well aware of how winning a division early can affect a team, and he'll at least try to make the effect be positive rather than negative.

Hey, if people aren't talking enough about your team, it's your fault, not ours... :P

That's why I'd like to see a one game playoff game between the top two wild card spots. It might cut down on the chances of a wild card team that just happens to be hot streaking to the World Series. It just seems to me that it happens a lot more often then it should.

The problem with that is that you give the division winners a week-long break... something that won't sit well with many teams.

So after a 162 game season, one game, in which a team may need to use it's 5th starter because there's no time to set up a rotation, should decide everything? Who cares i there's a surging team - even a surging team still had to win enough games in order for their "surge" to put them over the top.

Giants add Brad Penny

I know he struggled in Boston this season, but I think that has a lot to do with him being an NL pitcher. I've always liked Brad Penny, and feel that this is a HUGE move for the Giants.

Please. Brad Penny is what he is, a tempermental bad pitcher. There is no such thing as an NL or AL pitcher, either you can pitch or you can't and the only thing Brad Penny can pitch is a temper tantrum.
