2009 MLB Season Thread

Sorry, I just had to post this. It's from a Boston fan on some website called "Bar Stool Sports." And these people wonder why there is a sizable portion of sports society that can't stand them.

We're in October of 2009. The decade is rapidly coming to an end. And unfortunatly so is our decade of dominance. I mean there is no other way to look at it after the tragic events of yesterday. I mean a day like this would have been unheard of a couple years ago. Tom Brady getting outplayed by Kyle Orten? Papelbon giving up 5 runs while only getting 2 batters out and blowing the season? (I don't count the guy he picked off as him getting an out) Bottomline is we haven't won anything since the Celtics two years ago. Sure our teams our still competitive but it's no longer a forgone conclusion that we'll be having a parade at some point during the year. In other words we've just become like everybody else. Mortal. But in typical Boston fashion we ended the greatest run any city has every seen in the history of sports with a day so horrific that it was almost awe inspiring in a weird kind of way. Like watching a tornado tear through a small town or something. And in the end I'm not sure whether I should go into Cabo and party like crazy and remember the good times or just sit in my hotel room and cry.

Wow. What a bummer dude. "Tragic events?" Are you :censored:-ing kidding me? Oh and learn the difference between our and are douchebag. Spell check might not be the worst idea either.

Spare me.

I think it says more about you that you scour random Boston sports websites looking to ridicule a blog comment by a random fan proclaiming, basically, little more than that he is a Boston fan and his disappointment that two Boston teams lost very important games yesterday, and using hyperbole which may or may not be sincere (Unless you frequent the Barstool for the daily smokeshows, which I couldn't really blame you for). Do you want me to go on YouTube and find a comment from a random Boston hater like yourself stating that Boston is only home to a bunch of rich, ignorant racists and that Tom Brady is worse than Ryan Leaf? Because I could. And I could post it here, sarcastically asking why people who hate Boston make such unfounded, mindless judgments. I could also point to about 15 people off the top of my head just from this very site who probably also disapprove of Boston sports who have a much worse grasp on the English language than this guy, and a few with little to no knowledge of the existence of the caps lock button. And frankly, I'm kind of disappointed. I would think you would be praising this guy as the most rational Boston fan there is because he actually recognizes and publicly admits that Boston sports teams will not remain dominant forever and is not denouncing the rest of the nation in the name of almighty Boston, King of Sports. In fact, you, not him, are the one who descends to using an uninitiated personal attack. Do you know why I don't do the things I mentioned above? It's because there are people who hate in all corners of the nation. There are people who can't spell, and don't always exhibit grammar, in every single state. There are ass-holes who are fans of every single team in existence, but it's the ass-hole who is the fan of the teams which are winning who receives the most attention and hate because he becomes the tiny minority as all the other people band together to hate him. They go be ass-holes together, to each other, and to other random people, and all the while the world keeps spinning. This, I have learned, is an unexciting fact of life and is not exclusive to any one area of the country or even the world. And you know what? In this case, the guy in question isn't even an ass-hole.

You are.

How nice of you to tell us who is and isn't an a**hole. Yes, there are whackos in every fan base. They tend to over-exaggerate things and call names. "the greatest run any city has every seen in the history of sports?" Six titles over less than an eight-year span? The Yankees, themselves, won six times from 1947-1953.

However, if that blogger is the "most rational" Boston fan, then I can only imagine what the other fan/bloggers said about that game. I don't know why infrared goes to that blogging website, maybe it's just out of curiosity, much like how we stumbled on to this website.

I saw, I came, I left.

I think the Boston claim for a great run is interesting. New York's success in the 50s was based mostly on it Baseball. Its hard to think of a city having as much cross sport success as Boston had in the period since the Patriots won there first Superbowl. (6 titles across 3 sports). But I think its all part of the Boston-New York rivalry.

I'll bite on this.

The first thing that strikes me is that he's alluding to the fact that once the decade is over, that Boston sports will suffer. That's not the case. Once 2010 hits, the talent on the teams won't expire. The Bruins still have a shot to win the Stanley Cup, the Celtics still have a shot to win the NBA Championship and the Patriots still have a shot to win the Super Bowl. I've always thought how bad it would be if the Boston Red Sox turned into the Kansas City Royals or if the New England Patriots turned into the Detroit Lions. They'd have to close down the Zakim Bridge due to all the people jumping off every day. The real fact is that the Boston fans are spoiled because all four of the major sports teams are championship contenders. This could happen to any city. If Philadelphia wins it again this year, and in 2010 gets swept in the first round, you don't think the homers will come out and cry about it?

However, I do agree with gingerbreadmann, to a point. Seems like a lot of people find things like this and try to pawn it off as the official voice of the Boston fan. Now, I'm not trying to justify anything, but in my opinion, every city has the same proportion of fans. The same number of extreme homers and the same number of rational thinkers. It's all about who gets the exposure and who has the louder voice.

Every city doesn't have the same number of extreme homers and "that guy" fans on the CCSLC though. :P

Doesn't do us any favors, either :P

You are.

1. I wasn't scouring anything. It was front page on Deadspin. Not to mention the fact that this particular post was one of about 50 twitters and facebook posts from Boston fans saying basically the same thing. "Tragic", "awful", "black Sunday", and so on. I chose to post this one because, in a sea of self-pitying melodramatic blather, it was the most ridiculous post. At least it was until yours came along.

2. Calling me an ass-hole is one few things you've gotten right around here. Considering what a whiny little bitch you usually are, I really respect the fact that you had the guts to do it. Nice job. Now go back to your room and let the adults talk. :D

I should add that I do not think this moron (the guy in the article) represents all Boston fans. I posted the thing because it was absurd. Exposing Ginger as being every bit as bad the fans I was ridiculing was just icing on the cake. Clearly the dude doesn't like people picking on his Red Sox. Especially when it's an ass-hole like me doing it.

Seriously Ginger, you don't think "tragic events" or "a day so horrific" are just a bit over the top? Nah, you probably wouldn't.

Before you "expose" me, notice that I never once took a personal stance on the content of the comment or anything about agreeing or disagreeing with the guy. I was only talking about you and how you handled it, and I apologize for jumping to the conclusion that you were scouring for dumb comments. Of course it's absurd to call it a "tragic" day and to exhibit whatever excessive self-pity you want to include, but I could find 150,000 more arrogant and absurd comments by Boston fans about sports in no time if I wanted to, and so could you. I don't say anything most of the time you say something bad about Boston, but this time I felt you were totally out of place and irrational in your criticism, so I called you out. This has nothing to do with you or other people "picking on my Red Sox," because it happens all the time, and you have a right to. I will admit I probably paid more attention because it was about Boston, naturally, but I was careful to not make any points that criticized you for the specific city you were picking on. Maybe two years ago that would be mixed in, but this time I am more careful.

At this point I really don't care who wins the World Series, but I will say this. GO PHILLY. Please, spare me from having to see the stinkin Dodgers make/win the World Series (Just typing that makes me queezy).

These are our 4 options for this year's World Series (in order of personal preference):

Dodgers- Angels

Phillies - Yankees

Dodgers-Yankees

Phillies - Angels

I'd love to see another world series where both teams are from the same city. That was wild in 2000 and this time we won't have to go through the New York lovefest that the media pulled. Phillies-Yankees would be good as both teams play in the eastern time zone and I'd get to watch every game at a reasonable hour. Plus, as a Reds fan, I'd like to see the phillies lose and the Yankees have the best chance at doing so. Dodgers-Yankees would be good because they have a history and I'd love to see Joe Torre beat the Yankees. That would be delicious. Phillies-Angels, let's hope not. First of all, it would look like an intrasquad scrimmage, like the 02 Stanley Cup Finals, but also because I think the Phillies have a better shot at the Angels than they do the Yankees. If you don't understand why I want the Phillies to lose then direct your eyes to my signature.

I think the World Series games are starting at 8-8:30pm ET, regardless of who's playing. MLB/Fox isn't stupid enough to have their showcase series start at 10pm just because a California team is involved.

I came to a realization just now. All of the teams with the better regular season record in their respective LDS matchup won the series. So... if this trend continues it will be a Yankees-Dodgers World Series, and the Yankees would win, although we all know that won't happen. I found it at least a bit interesting, so I shared.

Dude you are entirely too :censored:-ing funny. You act like you've been letting me get away with something but this time I went too far and now I must suffer the wrath of something called Gingerbreadmann. Excuse me while I spend a few minutes shaking in my boots.

You have always taken this :censored: way more seriously than you, hell more than anyone should. I just wonder if you would have been so quick to "call me out" if I had posted something similar about the Rockies or Cardinals. Relax junior. I'm sure Red Sox Nation will survive my "irrational criticism." Now get back to your happy meal before you get hurt.

I was careful to not make any points that criticized you

You mean other than when you called me an ass-hole? :D
