2009 MLB Season Thread

According to Sports Center, the Pirates send Jack Wilson and Ian Snell to Seattle for Ronny Cedeno and catcher Jeff Clement. I think there were a couple other prospects sent to Pittsburgh as well.

And the other shoe drops as Freddy Sanchez is traded to the Giants for AA pitcher Tim Alderson. The Pirates may actually have 20 consecutive losing seasons as they are already at 17 after this season.

20? Are you kidding?? If the Pirates keep this up, they're going to hit 200 years! What a f***ing disaster.

Anyone know Griffey's walk-up music? Might wanna use it next season. :P

If it's not Hip Hop Hooray anymore, it's a damn shame.

Also, in case anyone (stillmighty/LMU) cares, Sean O'Sullivan threw a no-no last night for AAA Salt Lake. I'd still like to see the Halos get a pitcher at the deadline, but it's at least some hope. On another note, I'm not missing Teixiera one bit right now.

I just got an ESPN text about the Pirates trading Freddy Sanchez to the Giants for AA pitcher Tim Alderson.

So at what point precisely can MLB seize control of a franchise?

Something needs to be done. I think that's the 5th or 6th starting player for the Pirates that has been traded this season. They aren't even trying.

I would say that this is a good trade on the Pirates part because Alderson is a stud...but you know that once Alderson BECOMES a stud, they're gonna trade him or let him go to another team with more money anyways, so what's the point.

Well it cost 'em Ian Snell who came out and said he didn't want to go back to Pittsburgh after allowing 2 runs in 22 innings back in Indianapolis including two shutouts and a no-hitter.

Heard someone on one of the local sports-radio stations (forget which one) say that the Phillies got "Milwooded" - a reference to when they thought they had an ace by acquiring Kevin Milwood for a dispensible prospect (Johnny Estrada IIRC).

Milwood proved to be an out of shape POS who was completely undependable, and the feeling is that the Braves knew something about him that the Phillies didn't.

The fear (among some, certainly not most) is that the Lee trade could be Milwood 2.0, since the prospects that the Phillies gave up were either having disappointing seasons (Carasco, Donald, Marson), or are young and have injury worries (Knapp.)

Adding to this feeling:

Cliff Lee will wear #34...

Boy, what is UP with them daggone Pirates? Just giving folks away. The shame of it all is that it actually seemed like the players they had before Neal Huntington decided to play Santa Claus were actually TRYING to play hard. It'd have been one thing for them to just be out there...but they actually seemed to be trying. Now? I honestly have no idea who would want to play for that pathetic joke of a franchise. That's what it is.

BUT...the top brass is still gettin' their $$$, since, as I understand it, PNC Park is publicly funded.

(On another note...I've also heard that at the time PNC Park and Heinz Field were stood up, Three Rivers Stadium hadn't even been paid off yet??????)

It really is a shame because PNC Park is GORGEOUS and Pittsburgh is a great baseball city.

They just haven't had a team worth a damn since 1992.

That couldn't sell out playoff games in '92.

The excuse that some used was that there was a newspaper strike, so people didn't know when the games were. Makes perfect sense... I guess, if you don't have a TV.

Oh, and Boston fans are the worst.

Honorable mention: Yankee fans.

Went tonight, and it's the best beating up on your rivals, and making their fans shut up early.

Also got on the big screen! B)

Just a question here, can a Tampa Bay Rays fan really call out another teams fan base? I mean, sure Sox and Yanks fans can be abrasive, but at least they're supporting their team regardless. 80% of the current Rays fan base didn't even realize they were playing professional baseball in St. Pete until June of last year. Gimmie a break.

The Red Sox bandwagon sure got popular around 2004.

Just sayin'....

Stoked the Giants got sanchez, but Alderson is gonna be an absolute beast. Sad to see him go. And I also hope Sanchez's knee holds up. A little surprised that the "Big hitter" the Giants snagged at the deadline only has 6 home runs though...

Cliff Lee is still pitching well this year (and maybe the offense in Philly can support him lol). But yeah I'll take the Phils 2, 3, 4, and 10 prospects for a guy we wouldn't be able to keep past next year IIRC and an outfielder (we have plenty of those). To bad they couldn't throw in Wedge in the deal :P .

Hopefully, the Tribe are going to get really good with the prospects they've gotten from the Sabathia, Lee, and Blake trades. This is starting to look like what could evolve into a team similar to the '95-'97 Indians.

There's no hope young man. Do what I did and move on from Cleveland sports. Mark Shapiro got lucky with the Colon trade that landed Sizemore, Lee, and brandon Phillips. He hasn't done jack since then. And people wonder why I stopped being an Indians fan a while back.

Lee was 3-0 in his last three starts with a very good era. I don't think Millwood pitched three good games in a row in his entire career. Cliff Lee didn't want to be in Cleveland and he still pitched very well this season. His lackluster record is more a result of poor offensive support than it is his pitching. Lee is not Roy Halladay but he's still a great pick up for the Phillies. I was hoping he'd end up with the Dodgers.

On the Pirates, they should sell that team or something. They weren't half bad this season and they actually looked to be making a little progress. So what do they do? Trade away half the damn team. I see no rhyme or reason in what they are doing (talk about a grasp of the obvious eh?) At some point a team need to hang on to it's young talent. Too bad. Pittsburgh has about the nicest park in the majors. Now if they could only get another major league team to play against the visiting ones.

Johnny Estrada turned out to be an out of shape POS too! Isn't he out of baseball? I think he couldn't hack it with the Nats.

That's kind of the point though - Milwood was coming off of an 18-8 season, and the Phillies got him for a guy like Estrada. Everyone was laughing at the Braves for giving up a "stud" like Milwood for a "scrub" like Estrada.

Milwood threw a no-hitter at CBP, but other than that was booed relentlessly due to his poor performances, and inability to be able to handle the fan and media attention in Philadelphia, and his desire to go to a midwest or southern town with less pressure.

Johnny Estrada is a weird case. He appeared to be a solid hitter, but apparently the guy was such an insufferable douchebag at the most interpersonal position on the field that any redeeming skills he had were completely negated by his penchant for pissing off pitchers and managers alike. Also, he was fat.

Estrada was a solid player for the Braves, and was an All-Star while with Atlanta, I believe.

His career changed once Darin Erstad crashed into Estrada and knocked his senseless. I don't remember him being all that productive after that....

I remember him hitting well enough for the Brewers, but apparently they really didn't like having him around. I know he got in a fight with Ned Yost, but who wouldn't, really.
