MLB Traditions

Earlier today I was trying to find out the songs that each team plays in the 7th inning strech (seem they all have them) and I couldn't find a website that had alot of them.

Anyway, it got me thinking about all the cool (or lame) traditions in baseball that all the teams have (yes, even the Devil Rays) but I haven't been to many stadiums so I'm not familiar with everything so I thought I'd see how you guys could do filling in the blanks!

Now I'm talking about more the stadium experience stuff, including special foods that they are known for. Could be songs, things the fans say and do, etc. As long as the average fan of that team would be familiar with it, I'd like to know about it.

If this works for MLB I'll expand it into NHL, NFL, and NBA.

I'm sure I've forgotten a bunch of obvious ones so list those as well!

After some honorary person says "Play Ball" before the game, the Red Sox play "Play Ball" by J. Bristol. They also play "Centerfield" by John Fogerty sometime before the game. Tessie is played after "Dirty Water" when they win.

The Red Sox also have the famous Fenway Frank, the festival-like experience on Yawkey Way before games, The Pesky Pole, and there's the tradition of opposing players signing the inside of the Green Monster.

I don't know if this one counts, but the light on the Hancock building changes to I think red when the Red Sox win.

Boston Red Sox

"Sweet Caroline" in 8th inning

Washington Nationals

"Sweet Caroline" in the 8th inning

NatsTown: baseball's Australia.

Brewers: I'm sure lots of teams have pre-game tailgate parties, but is it a big thing like them like it is for the Brewers?

White Sox: "Na Na Hey Hey Goodbye" before everyone else stole it. Elsewhere, I don't want to fire the opening salvo here between the you-know-whos and the what's-their-names, so I'll let somebody else.

Cincinnati Reds: opening day parade!

Oakland A's: trumpet guy

♫ oh yeah, board goes on, long after the thrill of postin' is gone ♫

Yankees:

- Kate Smith's rendition of "God Bless America" during 7th inning stretch, Ronan Tynan on special occasions.

- Grounds crew does YMCA before top of the 7th

- Freddie Sez perhaps?

- I'm pretty sure they only play the Sinatra "New York, New York" now.

San Francisco Giants

Crab Races

There have never been crab races. There was an "anti-mascot" that was a crab, but never crab races.

Unless they started doing that in 2008 when I decided for my own sanity not to follow the team on a regular basis.

As far as traditions go for the Giants:

the homerun foghorn

intentional walk rubber chickens (although I think that one has been scrapped since FreakShow has departed)

Tony Bennett - "I Left My Heart In San Francisco" after a win

"Saturday Night" by the Bay City Rollers after the 7th inning stretch on a saturday night

Recently brought back from the 90's:

Animated Pirate "hosting" the game (

as well as introducing news headlines, 7th inning stretch, bloopers, etc.)

"Dead men tell no tales."

Vince Lascheid on the organ

The Pepsi bottle over the right field wall steaming and lighting up, along with the Pepsi logos, after a homerun.

A couple years ago they used to have a beacon flash atop the Gulf Building after every homerun/win, but not anymore.

Nats have the Presidents Races. Best thing about going to Nats games...watching Teddy lose.

And a staple since '93: losing records every year!

Crap...sorry I think between wanting to put president races and remembering the photo of the crab suit I got mixed up when typing...I'll remove and add all the other things. I've also updated with some wikipedia stuff I found.

The Braves still do the tomahawk chop.

Beat me to it.

Also, they play "Thank God I'm A Country Boy" or something to that effect after our 7th inning stretch, which basically sends the place into a frenzy.

Da Bleachuh Creachuhs! (I see you have Roll Call already, but they're a lot more than that)

Orioles, the Warehouse.

White Sox: 7:11?

Indians... the hat guy?

Angels' halo of course! And that big ecosystem environment thing in left field.

Blue Jays: Restaurant? I dunno, but I hear about it a lot when the Sox go there.

Pirates: Three bridges and the river(s).. gorgeous.

They do, Liza Minelli objected to be used after losses and demanded they stop.
