I just saw the 30 for 30 on rotisserie baseball. Absolutely fantastic. I had no idea fantasy sports had such a colorful history. I hope these 30 for 30 episodes come out on DVD.

Anyone been keeping up with these films?

ESPN took a bit of a hiatus to air college basketball, but the last few included the story of Hank Gathers/Paul Westhead, the trial of Allen Iverson, and tonight's two films: one about Ricky Williams, and the one that caught my interest..."Silly Little Game", which was about this group of folks in Philadelphia that came up with the idea of Rotisserie Baseball, which spawned the creation of fantasy sports.

I couldn't believe that the concept of fantasy sports has been around since 1980.

I'm amazed that those original fantasy guys had the diligence to manually calculate their fantasy scores. I get angry when I don't get live scoring on my fantasy baseball team, plus most of the fantasy baseball teams I've ever had I've gotten bored with. I've read articles about how they invented the game itself and it blows my mind. I'm also amazed, frankly, that fantasy sports aren't older than 30 years. I thought that was a fascinating discussion, however, I was not a fan of the reenactments.

My favorite one of these so far has been the Loyola Marymount Paul Westhead story.

I'm really interested in seeing the South Africa rugby story. I was really disappointed by Invictus so hopefully this does a better job of telling the story.

I'm praying they make a box set of them, I would buy that in an instant.

Run Ricky Run was a great exposé on a man that doesn't view the world the same way as most of his peers. I came away from the film respecting Ricky for being his own man, and not really bending to what people expected him to be.

Word. As someone who's a bit "aloof" myself, to say the least, I drew the same conclusion.

I really liked one phrase one of the interviewers had in regards to Ricky: "If you put a camera on him, he'll put a mirror on you". That's one of the more interesting perspectives I've heard in a long time.

Yeah that's what I'm hoping for. I'd buy them individually, but having a box set would be awesome.

Caught the 30 For 30 on the 16th Man last night. Even though I knew much of the story already, it was still a very informative and introspective piece. Really enjoyed the first-hand recollections from the actual players on that team. And...that Morgan Freeman narrated the piece (along the backdrop of his playing Nelson Mandela in the movie "Invictus") just added that much more to the film.

Something else I didn't pick up on until last night...I really like how they let other people produce/direct these films. Next up in the series is "Straight Outta L.A.", directed by, and probably partially narrated by, none other than O'Shea Jackson, b.k.a. Ice Cube. Looking forward to it.

I thought last night's 30 for 30 was better than Invictus. My only gripe was Morgan Freeman as narrator. I know Morgan Freeman was in Invictus, but ever since he narrated Shawshank he's been the go-to guy for story-telling voice overs. He's almost too good and has become a cliche.

If your gripe is Morgan Freeman as narrator, the problem isn't with Morgan Freeman. The problem is with you. :P

This entire series has been WAY better than expected. The 16th Man was great even after seeing Invictus, and Straight Outta LA looks like it may be good as well.

ESPN is doing a really good job with these docs.

Yeah I have to agree everyone wants Morgan Freeman to narrate because he is about the best you can get.

Wow, a thread around here that is complimentary to something ESPN is doing. I'd better start checking these out.

  • 1 month later...

We now have a new leader for the best doc. "June 17th, 1994" just blew everything out of the water IMO

Really? I had the opposite feeling...that this just wasn't up to par with the others.

I was glued. A+!

Morgan Freeman's involvement in any project makes that project immediately better. The guy is the gold standard in acting and voice work. He's simply one of the all-time greats.

ESPN went to outside talent and producers for these films so they only get credit for the idea itself and that was really Bill Simmons' work. They still suck at everything else. :D

Seriously though, is it me or is Bill Simmons is one of the most frustrating people in sports media? The guy is the douchebag that is "the sports pu**y" one minute then he's the force behind 30 IN 30 or writing a really great basketball book the next. It makes me want to congratulate him and then beat him with a shovel.

Isn't that like an officially proven scientific algorithm? I believe it looks like this:

Project (X) + Morgan Freeman's Voice (Y) = :D (Better)
