Players Will Have Option to Wear Jerseys with TECHFIT Technology Built Into Uniform

PORTLAND, Ore. ? March 25, 2010 ? In preparation for the 2010 Major League Soccer season, adidas has unveiled TECHFIT uniforms for three of the sixteen teams. For the first time ever, members of Chicago Fire, D.C. United and LA Galaxy will have the option of wearing adidas TECHFIT PowerWeb uniforms on the pitch this season.

Until recently, TECHFIT PowerWeb has been more commonly worn under a player?s uniform as compression apparel; but the new adidas MLS uniforms offer TECHFIT built into the actual jersey giving players the benefits of TECHFIT in a single layer.

?At adidas we are all about equipping athletes with the most innovative gear and apparel on the planet,? said Antonio Zea, Director of Soccer, adidas America. ?With TECHFIT now built into their jerseys, we are helping athletes from Chicago Fire, D.C. United and LA Galaxy play to their highest potential and we look forward to watching them perform at the top of their game this season.?

TECHFIT PowerWeb is a cutting edge athletic apparel technology that improves muscular endurance and responsiveness, and reduces muscle vibration, ultimately maximizing the athlete?s performance. Through the use of compression fabrics and strategically placed TPU (Thermoplastic Urethane) bands, located in key areas to enhance muscle power, TECHFIT is proven to increase a player?s power by 5.3 percent*, vertical leap by 4 percent*, sprint speed by 1.1 percent* and enhance endurance by 0.8 percent*.

The TECHFIT jersey as worn by the players on the pitch will be specially packaged and retail for $150 starting in July.

All other MLS teams will wear the adidas FORMOTION uniform. FORMOTION is engineered to move naturally with the athlete?s body resulting in an ideal fit and comfort while in motion. It also features adidas CLIMACOOL technology which combines a moisture wicking fabric and mesh construction in the player?s highest heat zones to improve body ventilation and keep the athlete at optimum temperature. The FORMOTION uniform is designed to partner with traditional TECHFIT PowerWeb compression apparel.

Federations with the option of TECHFIT uniforms include South Africa, Argentina, Mexico, Japan, Spain, Germany and France.

Theylook like Tour de France jerseys sans zippers. I'm betting that the All Stars all waer those when they play whomever this season. Did the World Cup tell them no thn? You'd think they'd have debuted these on a larger stage than the MLS.

They've already debuted these for the international kits. I think the main thing was how drastically different the regular & TECHFIT were. Some shirts had slightly altered designs just to go with the TECHFIT.

The release says players "will have the option of wearing" these uniforms. But wouldn't the whole team have to wear them, or no one at all? It would look pretty stupid to have some players wearing the TechFit jerseys and some wearing the regular jerseys when they have different designs.

The jersey styles aren't really different designs as much as they are different fits. As the company explained during a World Cup-related media tour at its Portland headquarters a few weeks ago, the TechFit system is designed to enhance performance and is custom fit to the player. Realizing that not every player will want this, they're making both of their styles available to players. It's their effort to make uniforms customizable to the players.

I kind of see it akin to players choosing to wear short or long sleeves. Are the differences in design really noticeable?

This is what is being sold on mlsgear.com for the Fire.

I haven't seen the MLS authentics for this year yet, or at least don't recall them. How close is this? This jersey has neither the white stripes down the front nor the wordmark on the front of the collar nor the blue stripe on the collar as depicted on the TechFits.

The Techfits are definitely noticeable from the other jerseys, even on the field. Look at France or Russia for proof. I think these look like crap compared to the regular jerseys and I'd be surprised if anyone other then the adidas sponsored players ever chose to wear these. As far as the World Cup I hope these aren't allowed, mainly because they are ugly but also because the team should all wear one style shirt as per FIFA guidelines

The Reebok Edge system makes it's way to soccer. Good! I don't watch the MLS, so they can have all the sleeker, crappy cuts that won't make David Beckham any less of an over-rated/over-player!
