RyanMcD29
I live 15 minutes away from Nassau Coliseum and I honestly can't think of any place where this arena could go.Kate Murray's place.Which would be awesome for me because it's across the street from me. Which would also be terrible because my house would be renovated into a parking lot In all seriousness, as I said they insisted that no taxpayer money will come out of this, but I'm skeptical on that. However, even with practically both political parties and every freakin' union on board, I can definitely see a vocal opposition come out of this. Besides, it's Long Island. All in all, I just want a new arena built. Everything's been so stupid leading up to this: the whole original Lighthouse proposal, the Town of Hempstead's stance on things, the fact they're building the Barclay's Center possibly basketball-only (depending on who you ask), the Willets Point protests, more than likely this idea and the referendum... Ugh just build something in the NYC area and call it a day. They can move to Staten Island for all I care just get into some building and ensure the future of the New York Islanders1-Eminent Domain could still be in play, so don't really laugh about that.2- The "no tax increase" is the biggest worry and the public already knows that after 12 hours. This is less of a plan than the Lighthouse Project as those who are on the commission have yet to detail how it will be paid for.3- Wang could have "bought" the current Nassau coliseum for the $200M he wanted to put into the facility in 2004 and made his renovations, but he wanted other people's money (aka taxpayers) to pay for it.1- With the Coliseum plans? Highly doubt that with the area surrounded by Hofstra, NCC, Meadowbrook Parkway, and Hempstead Turnpike. There's definitely no way in hell the two colleges would give up any land2- Agreed on the worries, we'll have to see how it goes3- Well, with the stupidity of the original Lighthouse project, Wang went all or nothing with his effin' mini-city inside a parking lot area (think Glendale with housing and buildings and crap that shouldn't have been thought of when replacing an arena) more so than wanting the taxpayers to pay the bill for the Coliseum being renovated Twitter: @RyanMcD29

I am not sure that this can occur in Nassau County with a casino even around Shinnecock for casino gaming.

MC2
Queens and Brooklyn are Long Island, so they would NOT lose the "Islander-ness" so to speak. Fast. Hard. Finish.
Gothamite
Theyd have to change the crest, though - Queens and Brooklyn are the only parts of Long Island currently excluded. The Green Bay Packers Uniform Database! Now in a handy blog.
pmoehrin
Queens and Brooklyn are Long Island, so they would NOT lose the "Islander-ness" so to speak. You could get away with Queens because there's really not much of a dividing line between Queens and the rest of Long Island.Brooklyn is Brooklyn though. It's not a part of Long Island even though it may be on the same land. It may be tough for people outside of the New York metro area to understand that, but Brooklyn for a long time was its own city. It didn't offically become part of New York until the turn of the century. You have to take that into account before you can understand why Brooklyn is so different from the rest of NYC.To still have them be called the Islanders while they played in Brooklyn would be taken as an insult to alot of people living in Brooklyn, and an absolute joke to others. Compared to how much grief the Jets and Giants get for playing in New Jersey, it would be nothing compared to how much the Islanders would get for still calling themselves that if they played in Brooklyn. They would probably have to change their name to avoid being a laughing stock. They know it as well, which is probably one of the reasons why they are trying so hard to avoiding moving to the Barclays Center.
The_Admiral
New York is still a city of islands. They wouldn't have to change their name at all. The crest would have to be tweaked (which would probably be fine with a lot of people here who don't like it very much), or maybe use the Brooklyn Bridge like that old circular Dodgers logo, but "Islanders" would be a good name for a team in any number of places. ♫ oh yeah, board goes on, long after the thrill of postin' is gone ♫

Nobody in New York cares that our football teams play in New Jersey. The only people who give them "grief" are those in Ohio and California who don't understand that suburbs can lie across state lines.Similarly, Brooklynites are fully aware that our borough sits on the western end of Long Island. We wouldn't mind if our hockey team's name reflected that. If the islanders are fighting to avoid the Barclays Center, it's because they don't want to be tenants in somebody else's development. They want to own their own. The Green Bay Packers Uniform Database! Now in a handy blog.
nash61
So what are the arena plans? They also beat a team comprised of Godzilla, the ghost of Abraham Lincoln, 2 Power Rangers and Betty White. Oh, and they played in the middle of Iraq on a military base. In the sand. With no ice. Santa gave them special sand-skates that allowed them to play in shorts and t-shirts in 115 degree weather. Jesus, Zeus and Buddha watched from the sidelines and ate cotton candy. tp49
So what are the arena plans? There no real reason to release plans, until the NIFA gave the OK to place this on the ballot. There is a way around both NIFA and the county legislature if both the county and the Town of Hempstead are willing to enter into such an arrangement. My sources indicate that they are not at least at this time though they could consider it in the future if NIFA doesn't allow the bond sale. Since NIFA is very hostile to the current administration this could be a big problem in getting this done.As an aside the Isles did lock up Grabner for five years last week so that's a positive.
