Breakwood
I remember 2 years ago i think Osbaldison got hurt so the ti-cats had to scramble for a kicker and a punter the one game... i think morreale took over the punting duties that game.... A yes I remember that game, as I was there. Me and my friend had no clue what was going on because we never saw Ozzy get injured and suddenly Moreale was kicking PAT's. zoneranger
I remember once in a Steelers game, Terry Bradshaw was injured, and his backup , either Mike Kruczek or Cliff Stoudt, was injured also. This was back when teams only carried two QBS so they brought in defensive back Tony Dungy, (yes that Tony Dungy) to finish the game at QB. Magus
This year, Dafoe was hurt and left the game, then Nurminen got in a fight and was kicked out. They played the last few minutes with no goalie. I think it was against the Oilers. i watched that game too. it was funny watching the last few minutes with no goaltending. which really wasn't too much of a deviation with Dafoe and/or Nurminen in net. i was relieved nurminen was booted. can't wait for lehtonen to unseat his ass as back up then eventually starter. Saintsfan
substitutes only came in in soccer in about 1967, before that quite a few FA cup finals were spoilt by having 10 men against 11 when one guy got injured. Also with only 1 substitute allowed, not many teams ever put a goalkeeper on the bench, so if the goalkeeper got sent off or injured you would see an outfield player go in goal. That was always hilarious and would happen a couple of times a year. Nowadays 3 subs are allowed so most teams put a goalkeeper on the bench. FiddySicks
Mark Grace pitched against the Giants one year when he played for the D backs and i think it was because they ran out of pitchers. Also, in the NFL when all the QBs go down, they usually send in the kicker or punter
jkrdevil
I know teams have run out of pitchers before. I believe Wade Boggs once pitched an inning because of this. There have been other occassions of this, as well. Just can't remember any. Can't think of a team running out of ANY bench players what so ever That wasn't because the Yankees ran out of pitchers. I that was in 1997 and the Yanks were playing the Angels and were getting blown out. They had a double header the next day so instead of wasting a pitcher out of the bullpen Torre had Boggs pitch. I believe he struck out the side.

jkrdevil
Perhaps? I know he pitched for the Yankees. Didn't know that he pitched for the Rays. For a 3rd Baseman he has pitched a lot.
mac
a few years ago I think it was the ducks first time in the playoffs and their starting goalie got hurt pretty early in the game, must have been hebert, they put their back up in and got on the phone and flew their starting minor league goalie in from cincinnati now I can't remember if this took place in one game or over the course of two games but anyways the backup goalie gets hurt, so this minor league goalie makes his nhl debut, I think, in the playoffs against the detroit red wings and believe it or not only let in I think one goal. Some one tell me I didn't just make that up because I remember something like that happening but I'm not sure if it was like that.
Anemic_Royaltea
i think the most famous example of this is when Lester Patrick (the 45 year old manager) strapped on the pads to close out the game for the Rangers back before they carried backup goaltenders on the road. Alphabet Man
in footy..........in 1933, the Saints were down to 15 players (back then there were 18 on ground and 1 on bench) and, we still beat the Shinboners (Roos)! The Saints were dwon to one player on the bench (usually have 4 bench) in the last quarter against geelong on saturday

CJR
I think I recall that. I wanna say the minor league goalie was Naumenko, but that's probably wrong.I remember that, it was against the Wings. I think it was Game 1 of the series, not sure about that. Tom Askey was the goalie that came in, Hebert started and Roussel was already injured. Hebert went down and Askey came in. Hebert was back for the next game.
slapshot
I thought I remember one time in a hockey game, both of a team's goalies went down, or the backup was hurt, and they called another goalie who was in attendance in the stands. He came down and dressed, but only stayed as backup backup on the bench, because the first backup was well enough to continue.
rockchalk
I know in 1986, after their huge fight against the Reds, the Mets ran out of position players because of ejections and substitutions and the last four innings, Roger McDowell and Jesse Orosco switched back and forth between the mound and outfield depending on if the Reds batter was right-handed or a lefty. Also you'll occasionally see a pitcher pinch-hit or run in an extra inning game because the bench has already been gone through.

IIRC there was a game against the Phillies around that time (or maybe 87 or 88) when McDowel was pitching, moved to RF for a batter or two (while they brought in a reliever) then resumed pitching and they brought in a new right fielder. Even as a youngsta' I thought that was a great strategy, and wonder why teams don't do more of it instead of pitching guys to one batter then switching them for another one batter guy and then switching to yet a third guy who pitches from the same side as the first guy. ColeJ
a few years ago in the NHL, i remember watching the stars/ducks game that turned into a huge brawl... craig ludwig hit teemu selanne, and the ducks players took exception... every faceoff from that point forward turned into a 5-on-5 fight.i remember by the end of the game, most of the players had been ejected... and i think it was anaheim who only had 1 goalie and 1 skater on the bench when the final whistle blew... it was a few years ago, so my memory isn't the greatest... but that's how i remember it.i think ralph and razor (stars announcers) said that the ref had told the ducks coach that if they ran out of players, he's call the game, before making the backup goalie enter the game.now that i think about it, i think roman turek was playing in net for the stars that game, and he even got ejected for fighting... but he wasn't fighting a goalie.and i also vaguely remember that one of the more brutal fights was anaheim's brent severyn pounding poor darryl sydor's face into much... funny thing is, both players got their name on the cup as teammates in 1999
DGivens87
noone? Chris - That happened in Red Sox-Boston University exhbition game this year during spring training. 3rd base coach Ron Johnson (Pawtucket Red Sox manager) was inserted into the lineup and promptly struck out. Anyone who's seen a pic of this guy won't find it hard to believe - he's a HEFFFER!!!
