2015 MLB Season Thread with Postseason Discussion

Actually beat the Reds in the LCS in 1973, a team that won 99 games that season (Los Angeles won 95 and finished 2nd). Initial instinct would have me think it helped the Mets that they had HFA that year, but the best-of-5 LCS years were always played under a 2-3 format, and you would have to figure that if the Reds had won their home games, then winning one game out of possibly three at Shea would've been a cake-walk for them. Instead, Mets snagged one at Riverfront and won two at home. And then in the World Series against the A's in the middle of the A's winning three straight championships, and the Mets nearly took them out as well; held a 3-2 series lead but couldn't win either of the last two in Oakland.

Those '73 Mets were managed by Yogi Berra. Maybe it should be no surprise that they had some spunk and character.

(I'm totally looking all this stuff up, by the way. I'm sure I won't remember relatively irrelevant details with perfect memory 40+ years after they've happened either.)

That's right, the '73 Mets were managed by Yogi. I'd totally forgotten that. The things I remember most about the '73 Mets are the Pete Rose - Bud Harrelson fight, how much I hated the Reds back then, and how much I like the Mets uniforms. (I was 12 at the time.)

That 73 series also featured Willie Mays' final appearance as a player, too. Actually, from what I've read, he was so inept in the field at that point that he actually kinda heavily contributed to them losing that series.

Forgive me if this has been asked or answered... for some reason I can't find this out on my own despite having access to the online MLB Style Guide and what-not, but...

Am I partially color-blind, or are the Cubs, Mets, Royals and Blue Jays all sporting the same PMS blue?

It's probably the Ambien. Anyway, I don't know if all three teams are sporting the exact color, but they're pretty damned close.

No Ambien on Friday nights. Especially when I'm editing/producing liners and IDs for 101.9 WKRP.

Ned Yost dink and dunk death by papercuts ball wins again.

The Royals are basically Ichiroing teams to death. Getting all those little little hits over and over.

Do you ever not have a problem with anything?

(I know you won't respond to this because you never seem to respond to anything negative about you)

Volquez looked really good tonight. So good that I was shocked to see he'd only struck out 5; I was convinced he'd gotten more. His 2-seam fastball was nearly unhittable with the way it was moving. I'd say he was the player of the night by far.

And the Royals channeling thier inner Tony Gwynn tonight really paid off. Simple, timely hits that piled up at the right time. I fully expect Toronto to bounce back and make this a series, but the Royals' performance was pretty telling tonight as far as what they can do when the offense is moving. Throw good pitching in there like what Volquez gave tonight, and that's a very tough team to keep up with.

Okay, I like the blue Jays alts as much as the next guy, but can we please get their regular road uniforms at least once this ALCS?

Nothing wrong with small ball. I remember the 2002 Angels playing a very similar game. Especially within the AL, it's often a good strategy. Home runs are exciting, but the teams that have already lost in the playoffs relied too much on them, I think. The Royals are were they are now because they get timely hits, have good defense, steal, etc. They're fun to watch for that reason alone.

Price pitched very well up to the 7th. The Royals bats just came through in bunches late. Some may point to the gaffe in the outfield with Bautista and Goins, but credit the Royals for taking advantage of that and jamming single after single down Toronto's throat from that point on. Also, Hochevar deserves some credit for shutting the Jays off in his appearance prior to the Royals erupting; it may have been merely a tie game or less rather than a 5-3 lead had he not.

The overall momentum is definitely back in Kansas City's favor, and in a big way.

I just want to give David Price a hug. Goins :censored:ed it up for him

It's not Goins' fault that Price is mentally weak enough to be rattled by one runner on. Price has validated everything the critics have said about him being a playoff choker.

We are doomed to live in a world where Ryan Vogelsong is clutch.

It's just so tiresome seeing the Royals single teams to death. It honestly would have been less painful if Morales just put one over the fence.

I love the smallball style. When I played in high school, that's the kind of style we played with. My coach was a big fan of it and lived by it, and I came to do so as well as a player (never hit a homer, but racked up quite a few singles, doubles, and steals). It's super effective and wears on pitch counts a whole lot more than the power game does. It's really fun to watch the Royals master it and I don't have any issue with them doing so. To be honest, it's actually pretty refreshing to watch a team win that way rather than relying on muscle.

I think you absolutely can point to Goins mistake precisely because Kansas City is the type of team that will capitalize on mistakes like that. You can't make a bonehead move like that against a team as opportunistic as the Royals, because chances are they're gonna find a way to work with that.

Yeah, these are my thoughts. Not to mention it seems to be the better strategy in the playoffs. Relying on home runs is much more of a gamble, I think, and can be easily neutralized. But hitting single after single seems reliable and isn't reliant upon the design of the ballpark (i.e. if it's more hitter- or pitcher-friendly). I can understand some like watching high-powered offense, and I think that will return during the SkyDome games, but the Royals are hard to beat because of their small ball. Like I stated, I remember the 2002 Angels playing very similar to this, and they beat some high-scoring teams like the Yankees and Twins that year.

While admittedly it is a little boring to see all these singles, it's actually kind of vindicating for baseball fans. In an era where it's all about flashy, 400-foot home runs, it's actually kind of refreshing to see a team win the "good old-fashioned way."

Wow, I just sounded like an old fart.

Anyways, the similarities to last year's ALCS are striking. An AL East team that hasn't won the division and been really really good in 15+ years runs into the Royals in an ALCS where they are favored. Of course, last year the O's bats went ice cold, and the Jays' bats have actually been decent so far. The Royals have simply been outplaying them.
