Their top nav has been full of "greatest hits" for the past month or so, and this week they've been doing retrospectives on the main sites. It sure feels like it's winding down. I'll be sad when Gawker, Deadspin and Gizmodo are gone. The writers will likely land elsewhere, but the Grantland/Ringer experience has shown us it's never quite the same. 2 minutes ago, Kramerica Industries said: Well, there's this: The bankruptcy auction is next week. JayMac
My jaw literally dropped when I saw your post! RIP Mr. Saunders. A sad day in Bristol and all over America with this loss. One of the only remaining ESPN people that I like.

leopard88
Just saw that. I remember him from his days doing local sports in Baltimore . . . back in the early 80s. http://www.espn.com/espn/story/_/id/17263104/john-saunders-long-familiar-air-face-espn-nearly-30-years-died-age-61 Quote Most Liked Content of the Day -- February 15, 2017, August 21, 2017, August 22, 2017 ///// Proud Winner of the CCSLC Post of the Day Award -- April 8, 2008 Originator of the Upside Down Sarcasm Smilie -- November 1, 2005
FiddySicks
Stu Scott, John Saunders, Chris Mortensen looking in rough shape, Craig Sager having his battle. Damn. It's been a rough go for sports broadcasters lately. 1 Quote On 11/19/2012 at 7:23 PM, oldschoolvikings said: She’s still half convinced “Chris Creamer” is a porn site.) infrared41
John Saunders was a class act and a real talent. He'll be missed. 1 Quote All roads lead to Dollar General.
Cujo
Saunders was one of the very few professionals on ESPN who didn't need a gimmick to gain popularity and respect from his co-workers and viewers alike. Haven't heard a cause of death yet, not that it matters. Tragic and too soon. He'll be missed.

Today, on The Dan LeBatard Show, Bob Ryan reflected on Saunders and mentioned that he (Saunders) was a Diabetic and over 20 surgeries for joint pain due to his hockey playing days. He did have a fall on the ABC College Football set in NYC some years ago and fractured his skull/brain bleeding. There is also an Amazon pre-order memoir in which Saunders wrote about battling Depression. So suicide is definitely a possibility.

The latter part, I was sadly thinking the same thing, especially when I saw someone mention his depression issues on another board. I'm someone who has dealt with depression and anxiety, and after hearing about Saunders' own depression, I just hope that he didn't do the unthinkable. 2001mark
Rogers Sportsnet has canned hockey guy Mike Johnson. Not sure why twitter is shocked/disappointed by this, he was pretty annoying in the booth. Quote @2001mark
The_Admiral
Johnson never really distinguished himself to me. He wasn't actively terrible like a lot of Rogers broadcasters. I don't think it's a disappointing firing in and of itself so much as it's yet another indicator that things are going very, very poorly for Rogers and the NHL in Canada as of late. They can't make a dime on this rights deal. They've had to fire people left and right. So this is yet another perplexing thing about the woke hockey hivemind doing a victory dance over Canadian teams sucking: victory for whom, exactly? Their teams suck, people stop watching, can't sell the ad time, can't pay their employees, product quality drops, harder for the Maple Leafs and Canadiens to subsidize the rest of this sham league. Who are we getting one over on when the entire ecosystem of hockey telecasting is falling apart before our eyes? 1 Quote ♫ oh yeah, board goes on, long after the thrill of postin' is gone ♫

I think Rogers will come around if a couple Canadian teams can get back to top 4 conference form, with sustainable rosters. The_Admiral
Let me add that I don't think Rogers even does a very good job with the NHL. We've said all there is to say about the Strombo mistake, they overexposed the product with the Sunday night national game, and generally don't do things as well as TSN/RDS did (and continues to do where they can). But for the situation to get even worse devalues the entire league, the way being on the Outdoor Life Network did. The whole "serves them right" attitude toward the Canadian teams and their television partner is inscrutable and does not indicate a smarter fan at all. 1 Quote ♫ oh yeah, board goes on, long after the thrill of postin' is gone ♫
