Late spring 2018 is their target and that's if the zoning issues are resolved in two weeks when the commission meets.

 I'm sure that'll go smoothly

Sort of. I wouldn't be surprised if there are a few members of management who got majorly screwed over in the process. No word if it's just the naming rights or the actual club as far as I've heard.

Question. Does anybody know what's supposed to happen to Bonney Field if Sacramento Republic moves up to MLS?

As far as I know nothing will happen to Bonney Field. Besides soccer it's used for rugby and concerts. I wouldn't be surprised if the Republic move up to MLS that they put a reserve team at Bonney.

Okay, that's good to hear. Although I can't help but think a future reserve team won't draw the same numbers that SRFC has been able to do in USL. Could be wrong though.

It's Cal Expo, so nothing. It will remain the site of concerts/ralleys and the California State Fair. They'll probably put in a SRFC 2 and it really doesn't matter if they draw amazingly well because the facility is dirt cheap to run, and owned by the food vendors who do all of the state fair food anyway.

The 2017 Major League Lacrosse All-Star Game will be played in July at Bonney Field as well.

Isn't Bonney a modular temporary stadium however?

Yeah the bleachers are temporary but the venue itself won't be removed as it's been there since the late 1960s and is the permanent home of the California State Fair. The plan right now is to have another team at Bonney once Republic moves up, and it doesn't really matter if they draw that well because it's such a cheap venue to run. Also, Sac's new PRO Rugby team (If that's gonna still be a thing) plays at Bonney Field. Honestly though, IMO, losing Bonney Field won't be much of a huge loss in anything other than memories. It's just bleachers and some grass.

Isn't that the same type of temp setup that BC Lions/Vancouver Whitecaps used while renovating BC Place? The 'stadium' itself was just a huge temporary bleacher on all four sides, and all the facilities were located on the ground behind the stands (concessions, restrooms, etc).

Nice stadium plans. Hope the rights pay well, since they're probably forbidden to have any other car manufacturer as a sponsor now.

From info I've gathered (from various articles and blogs) the Audi naming rights deal supposed to be 10-12 years long paying $4 million a year. Overall the deal is worth somewhere between $40-48 million. Not too shabby. Actually surprised DCU managed to get that big of a brand name to buy the naming rights.

Kind of makes me wonder what the Washington Nationals are doing wrong. They've been trying to sale the naming rights of Nationals Parks since it opened back in 2008.

Nationals Park opened during the recession and while the team contracted with The Wasserman Media Group in '08 to gauge interest in naming rights, it wasn't a priority since 2010. The TV situation is far more important and Lerner doesn't exactly need the money as they've sold naming rights to other areas of the stadium.

Last spring, they assigned Korn-Ferry with the task now and with the All Star game there in 2018, look for it to be done by then.

DC United gets final zoning approval to build new stadium. Groundbreaking ceremony February 27th. Team is hoping Audi Field will be ready by June 2018.

Not sure if they plan on playing all road games the first 3 months of the 2018 season, or if they'll continue to rent out RFK during that time. We'll see.

I thought I read somewhere that 2017 was going to be the last year at RFK, whether the new stadium is ready or not.

So, may play in College Park, FedEx, Annapolis, or some other, probably very small, stadium nearby. Or, just play all on the road  until then (that would be best, as you get all the revenue at the home venue for the year). But, if it's not ready in time, you start punting home games off to other places at the last minute and it doesn't look good.

Out of those options, College Park is probably the best even though it isn't ideal.  Annapolis would be great, but it's probably too far away and doesn't have a mass transit connection to Washington.  Maryland Stadium* is probably too big, to be honest, but there is a Metro line nearby.

Maybe a rotation would work if there are multiple games in play (e.g., two in College Park, two in Annapolis).  Games in Annapolis might draw fans who haven't attended games at RFK (either because of the distance or because the place is in terrible condition now).

* -- I almost typed Byrd Stadium.  Old habits die hard.

Does anybody know what was the fastest amount of time a professional sports arena/stadium was built from the start of construction to it's first event? Gotta be honest there's something unsettling to me about DC United's new stadium being built in under 2 years.
